As its name suggests, the Baglioni provides its guests with very Italian-inspired surroundings, despite its location at the heart of a truly British environment (including the weather!) at the centre of the upmarket borough of Kensington. Having said that, the welcome you'll receive from the staff and the decorative detail of the lobby alone are enough to take your mind off what the weather happens to be doing. The management team has put a great deal of thought into the decor of this place, from the communal areas to the guest rooms, making it an original 5 star establishment and a far cry from the traditional British hotel.

    Location 6.22 /10

The Baglioni stands along Kensington Road, just a few minutes from the High Street Kensington, Gloucester Road and South Kensington tube stations, in the elegant borough of the same name. The famous Hyde Park is also just a stone's throw away and the main shopping street is just a little further along, with tourists and locals alike flocking to its shops and typically English pubs, restaurants and fast-food outlets. From here it only takes around twenty minutes to reach the centre of London and the main tourist attractions as the borough is served by two tube lines, namely the Circle Line and the District Line.

    Accommodation 8.50 /10

The 5 star Baglioni has settled somewhere between moderation and excess, with only 18 guest rooms as opposed to 49 suites! The style of the low key, romantic rooms is not unlike that of the rest of the hotel and will have you thinking you're in Italy in a matter of seconds thanks to the dark wooden parquet flooring, gilded vases, striped fabrics and black and white photographs. The amenities are what you would expect of a very modern hotel, including a huge bed (in most rooms), Frette bed linen, a stylish phone, a flat-screen television, Wi-Fi Internet, a safe (in 90% of the rooms), an espresso machine, etc. Meanwhile, the black marble bathrooms are very generously sized and equipped with a metal washbasin, large mirrors, bathrobes and welcome toiletries, not to mention the ambient music you can have playing in the background.

    Overview 8.70 /10

The Baglioni is housed in a pretty, eclectic 3 storey red-brick building and certainly keeps its cards close to its chest... The doors to the hotel open into the lobby that is decorated in an attempt at contemporary Baroque, complete with large black chandeliers, a gilded reception area, velour armchairs and even a fountain. This theme is continued throughout the hotel, from the restaurant to the guest rooms, not forgetting the parquet-flooring in the lift! The hotel also has a spa equipped with treatment rooms, a hammam, a jacuzzi and a gym - perfect for relaxing after a hard day's sightseeing!

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

The Baglioni wouldn't be entirely Italian had it not made its restaurant, the Brunello, a focal point. Proud of its origins, the hotel has chosen to focus on Italian cuisine (and more in general Mediterranean), which is served in a dining room opening onto the lobby. You can also relax with a drink here, as the restaurant has a lounge and bar area where'll you find the same Baroque ambience felt throughout the hotel. You might also be interested to know that the bar was voted 'Best Hotel Bar' in the prestigious Europe-wide 'Villegiature Hotel Awards' in 2005. There is also a terrace which can accommodate twenty or so additional guests when the weather allows.

    To know

The Baglioni belongs to the hotel chain of the same name, which has 17 other establishments in Italy, France, Hungary, the United Arab Emirates and Morocco. Open since 2003, the hotel has always been a hotel, which is rather rare in a city where many of the buildings have been reborn countless times. Renovation work has, however, been carried out on a regular basis since its opening, according to the management.

If you are an enthusiast of contemporary hotels, this one certainly isn't for you! As this used to be the Queen Mum's residence, it is of course listed as a historical monument, which means that nothing in the building can be altered... This didn't stop the hotel, however, from installing all the modern amenities. It is very much like a little museum, as it used to be the Earl of Strathmore's dwelling place, hence the name. Indeed, there aren't any leisure-dedicated facilities within the hotel, but this only serves to educate and allow you to discover the town better! We recommend it to couples with no children.

Described by the British media as the capital's most romantic hotel, the Gore is also believed to be the most photographed. Light years away from the anonymous hotel chains commonly found in large cities, this establishment provides intimate surroundings not unlike those you would expect to find at a guesthouse. Located between the exclusive districts of Knightsbridge and Kensington, the facilities offered by the Gore are every bit worthy of its 5 star rating, making it ideal for special (and even not so special) occasions! It is particularly recommended for couples without children, as there are no facilities to cater for younger guests.

Don't let the appearance of this classical 19th century building fool you - although the inside is as elegant as its exterior facade, you're likely to find a few nice surprises in store. This may be due to the fact that this is no ordinary hotel! Instead, it is a 'large luxurious house', as the management likes to call it, located at the very heart of the elegant Kensington district and just a stone's throw from the park of the same name. You will definitely need to have a blank cheque book if you want to stay, or even just dine, at this 5 star establishment...

The 396-room 10 storey Royal Garden Hotel is a 'factory-hotel' that is currently undergoing major renovations (after some of the guest rooms, the lobby is next in line for a makeover). Located in an ultra trendy part of Kensington, the hotel prides itself on being the only establishment in London to boast a cosmetic surgery clinic combined with a well-being centre! This is a comprehensive hotel that is likely to intimidate those who prefer things on a smaller scale.

This little boutique hotel in an old Georgian house is nothing like the legendary palaces or traditional houses of England. It offers its guests a number of advantages, including its location at the heart of a very hip neighbourhood, an intimate atmosphere and personalised service. However, there is a slight drawback: while the decor in the common areas is worthy of a boutique hotel, the same cannot be said of the guest rooms.

In very much the same way as the opening of The Savoy caused tongues to wag furiously back in 1889 with its electricity, new fangled lifts and en suite bathrooms, the reopening after three years of renovation on 10th October 2010 was the biggest talking point in the British, if not world, hotel industry. Brought back to its full Art Deco and Edwardian glory, The Savoy is now bigger and better than ever. The jewel in the crown of London's hotels now has several new features and much of what came before has had a full face lift. Immaculate rooms, exquisite dining and the finest of décor make of The Savoy the only place to stay in this town. It proves that class is timeless.

The beautiful gothic St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, now almost 140 years old, is located right next to King's Cross St Pancras, which might not be in the most glamorous of neighbourhoods, but the hotel's 1800 period charm is unbeatable. The enormous hotel raised to the grey London skies with its stern-looking clock tower and turrets, looks extremely daunting, but once inside, the atmosphere is cosy and warm. A great place to stay for business people needing to be close to the station, but also a fun and unusual experience for leisure guests. The only hotel in the country to be built right on the railway, the St Pancras Renaissance is one of a kind; if you do not decide to stay here, try dropping in for a coffee or lunch at The Booking Office or Gilbert Scott.

The exclusive St. James's Hotel and Club is appropriately tucked away discreetly at the end of a cul-de-sac behind The Ritz on Piccadilly. While perhaps not quite of the same standing as its West End neighbour, the property is nonetheless a class act and has a history and following to rival that of any London hotel. The guestrooms are decorated and appointed to the highest standards and feature every amenity expected of a place like St. James's. As well as Michelin star dining and a service of the utmost attention to detail, the hotel still operates as a club to the rich and famous so you never know who you will be rubbing shoulders with when you stay here. More of a couples' or individual hotel, the St. James's is the place to come for intimacy, discretion and privacy.

This former town hall in East London represents one of the most remarkable transformations of any building in the capital. While most of the edifice's original architectural features have been guarded, this has not been seen as an obstacle to introducing a highly contemporary design into the hugely spacious rooms, world-class restaurant and divine pool and gym. Add to this a unique art project, great service and a vibrant history and you get one of the most unconventional hotels in London. Recommended for all types of traveller, especially those who are tired of staying in the town centre and are looking for an alternative location.
