If you are an enthusiast of contemporary hotels, this one certainly isn't for you! As this used to be the Queen Mum's residence, it is of course listed as a historical monument, which means that nothing in the building can be altered... This didn't stop the hotel, however, from installing all the modern amenities. It is very much like a little museum, as it used to be the Earl of Strathmore's dwelling place, hence the name. Indeed, there aren't any leisure-dedicated facilities within the hotel, but this only serves to educate and allow you to discover the town better! We recommend it to couples with no children.

    Location 6.91 /10

The Strathmore Hotel stands a few minutes' walk from the Gloucester Road underground station, in elegant South Kensington. The famous Hyde Park is a short 10 minute walk from the hotel and there is a shopping street a little further on, where tourists and locals crowd into boutiques, traditional pubs and fast-food restaurants. From the hotel, it only takes around 15 minutes to reach the centre of London and the main tourist attractions, as this borough is served by three underground train lines, namely the Circle Line, the District Line and the Piccadilly line.

    Accommodation 7.30 /10

77 guestrooms are hiding behind the doors of the Strathmore and 4 categories are available: single, standard double, executive double and family (two beds). You won't need to visit every room, as the decoration is the same in each and every one of them! This 5 star hotel has to provide every facility expected for these standards: telephone, plasma screen television, tea and coffee-making facilities, new and comfortable mattresses and a (small and basic) bathroom equipped with welcome toiletries, a hair dryer, a shower or a bathtub, etc. Do not expect to find a mini bar or air conditioning however! The latter could not be installed because of the building's listing. You probably won't need it anyway if the weather remains true to its English self! As for the view, you will be given a choice out of the street or the private garden opposite the building. In terms of decor, the management opted for a traditional style with paintings and period furniture (the same choice was made for the common areas) associated with modern characteristics (such as the new mattresses).

    Overview 7.95 /10

Admiring the historic building is a vertiginous activity in itself... As are the first few steps taken inside the building. You won't know where to turn, gazing at paintings from another time here and there, or at the tartan-patterned carpet, or even the long wooden staircase. The small marble reception is concealed in a distant corner of the left hand side corridor. You can walk up a period stairway to the upper floors or use the narrow lift. There is no gym or spa here, but if you want a massage, you can go to another one of the group's 5 star hotels. This one does provide two conference rooms though.

    Food and drink 7.80 /10

The restaurant is set up in a large and beautiful hall with a capacity of 140 guests and is open for lunch and dinner (which will give you the opportunity to try out the district's other restaurants for lunch). This hall is all clad in columns, chandeliers and carpet, perfectly adapted to the hotel's overall style. The menu presents a choice of international cuisine, starting at £20 or £25 for a two course meal. Breakfast is served as an English buffet on weekdays and a continental one at the weekend. A traditionally British lounge, open 24 hours a day (or up to 10:00pm for the general public), takes over after hours in case guests are thirsty or have a sudden craving for a night cap!

    To know

The Strathmore was the Grange group's first hotel. The present owners haven't altered a single bit of wall since they acquired the building, about thirty years ago. It is impossible for them to modify the size of the rooms, but that doesn't mean that the building cannot be renovated... In 2007, the management took on some redecorations in the rooms and had the mattresses changed.

As its name suggests, the Baglioni provides its guests with very Italian-inspired surroundings, despite its location at the heart of a truly British environment (including the weather!) at the centre of the upmarket borough of Kensington. Having said that, the welcome you'll receive from the staff and the decorative detail of the lobby alone are enough to take your mind off what the weather happens to be doing. The management team has put a great deal of thought into the decor of this place, from the communal areas to the guest rooms, making it an original 5 star establishment and a far cry from the traditional British hotel.

Described by the British media as the capital's most romantic hotel, the Gore is also believed to be the most photographed. Light years away from the anonymous hotel chains commonly found in large cities, this establishment provides intimate surroundings not unlike those you would expect to find at a guesthouse. Located between the exclusive districts of Knightsbridge and Kensington, the facilities offered by the Gore are every bit worthy of its 5 star rating, making it ideal for special (and even not so special) occasions! It is particularly recommended for couples without children, as there are no facilities to cater for younger guests.

Don't let the appearance of this classical 19th century building fool you - although the inside is as elegant as its exterior facade, you're likely to find a few nice surprises in store. This may be due to the fact that this is no ordinary hotel! With its 38 rooms, the Cranley looks more like a large family residence than a hotel. There is neither a restaurant nor breakfast room; everything is served in your room or (in the case of tea or champagne) in the small reception-lounge area decorated in a completely traditional 100% English manner. It is primarily a recommended destination for couples, as the hotel does not offer much in the way of entertainment.

This little boutique hotel in an old Georgian house is nothing like the legendary palaces or traditional houses of England. It offers its guests a number of advantages, including its location at the heart of a very hip neighbourhood, an intimate atmosphere and personalised service. However, there is a slight drawback: while the decor in the common areas is worthy of a boutique hotel, the same cannot be said of the guest rooms.

In very much the same way as the opening of The Savoy caused tongues to wag furiously back in 1889 with its electricity, new fangled lifts and en suite bathrooms, the reopening after three years of renovation on 10th October 2010 was the biggest talking point in the British, if not world, hotel industry. Brought back to its full Art Deco and Edwardian glory, The Savoy is now bigger and better than ever. The jewel in the crown of London's hotels now has several new features and much of what came before has had a full face lift. Immaculate rooms, exquisite dining and the finest of décor make of The Savoy the only place to stay in this town. It proves that class is timeless.

The beautiful gothic St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, now almost 140 years old, is located right next to King's Cross St Pancras, which might not be in the most glamorous of neighbourhoods, but the hotel's 1800 period charm is unbeatable. The enormous hotel raised to the grey London skies with its stern-looking clock tower and turrets, looks extremely daunting, but once inside, the atmosphere is cosy and warm. A great place to stay for business people needing to be close to the station, but also a fun and unusual experience for leisure guests. The only hotel in the country to be built right on the railway, the St Pancras Renaissance is one of a kind; if you do not decide to stay here, try dropping in for a coffee or lunch at The Booking Office or Gilbert Scott.

The exclusive St. James's Hotel and Club is appropriately tucked away discreetly at the end of a cul-de-sac behind The Ritz on Piccadilly. While perhaps not quite of the same standing as its West End neighbour, the property is nonetheless a class act and has a history and following to rival that of any London hotel. The guestrooms are decorated and appointed to the highest standards and feature every amenity expected of a place like St. James's. As well as Michelin star dining and a service of the utmost attention to detail, the hotel still operates as a club to the rich and famous so you never know who you will be rubbing shoulders with when you stay here. More of a couples' or individual hotel, the St. James's is the place to come for intimacy, discretion and privacy.

This former town hall in East London represents one of the most remarkable transformations of any building in the capital. While most of the edifice's original architectural features have been guarded, this has not been seen as an obstacle to introducing a highly contemporary design into the hugely spacious rooms, world-class restaurant and divine pool and gym. Add to this a unique art project, great service and a vibrant history and you get one of the most unconventional hotels in London. Recommended for all types of traveller, especially those who are tired of staying in the town centre and are looking for an alternative location.
