Nestled in the heart of one of London's most beautiful and sophisticated districts, the Kensington Close Hotel doesn't go unnoticed. Housed in a large period building of red brick, the façade displays its name... to the letter! The charm continues inside the building thanks to the numerous amenities at hand - this hotel is a delightful and most welcome asset in the British capital.

    Location 5.69 /10

The Kensington Close Hotel stands a few minutes away from the High Street Kensington underground station, in the elegant district of the same name. The shopping street is a mere few minutes away from the hotel and it holds a number of boutiques, traditional pubs, restaurants and takeaways, where tourists rub shoulders with Londoners. From here it only takes around 20 minutes to reach the centre of London and the main tourist attractions, as the borough is served by two tube lines: the Circle Line and the District Line.

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

If it's a small establishment you're looking for, you won't find it here! The Kensington Close houses a total of 550 guest rooms: 300 new ones and another 250 that were renovated at the end of 2009. They are divided into the following categories: standard (single or double), executive and club. 200 new rooms (as well as 2 new floors) are due to complement the bunch. As is the case in most of the city's older establishments, the guest rooms are all different in size and layout. Fingers crossed: you might just happen on the most spacious one! They are all equipped with a 'deep sleep concept' bed mattress (very comfortable), a telephone, a plasma screen television, tea and coffee-making facilities, a mini bar, air conditioning, wireless Internet access, and a bathroom with a bathtub, hospitality products, and bathrobes. Note that it is possible to be upgraded for a few extra pounds: £30 to switch from a standard to an executive room and £49 to upgrade from an executive to a club room. The price for the latter includes free access to the spa, to the wireless Internet network, and to the club lounge open for breakfast and in the afternoon from 2:00pm to 10:00pm.

    Overview 7.95 /10

Although the entrance is recent, the marble clad lobby furnished with leather armchairs will momentarily plunge you in the 1930's, or at least send you back a few decades. Note that the reception is divided into two distinct parts: one for people on business and the other for guests on a leisure break. A very brief trip back in time assuredly, as the new millennium resurfaces in the rooms and most of the common areas, but more particularly at the 'Emotion' spa, also open to non-residents. In addition to the sauna, hammam, jacuzzi and massage rooms, it conceals the neighbourhood's largest pool between its walls.

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

Of course, with such a great number of mouths to feed (550 guest rooms), two restaurants - and a bar - were definitely needed! The main restaurant 'Senses', set up in a large hall located on the ground floor (200 seats), is open for breakfast (continental and English buffet), lunch and dinner (buffet on request or à la carte). The much smaller 'Blue Smoke Steakhouse' (45 seats) is open for dinner only and serves - as its name suggests - a prodigious selection of meats. We highly recommend that you book in advance. The decor is cosy, with black and white photographs of Hollywood stars on the walls... If you are in the mood for a casual meal or a liquid lunch, head for the traditional pub located near the lobby.

    To know

Built in 1935, the hotel used to be an apartment building. Its advanced age means that it now undergoes regular renovations, and indeed, at the time of our visit the hotel indeed being renovated, but the - discreet - work didn't at all affect our delicate ears... Beware of neighbours banging doors at night though! Note that a car park is at the disposal of your coach for the modest sum of £32 a day. Other than the Kensington Close Hotel, the Cola Holdings 'family' owns two other hotels in the capital city: the Westbury Mayfair 5 star Luxury and the Kingsway Hall Hotel 4 star Deluxe.

If you are an enthusiast of contemporary hotels, this one certainly isn't for you! As this used to be the Queen Mum's residence, it is of course listed as a historical monument, which means that nothing in the building can be altered... This didn't stop the hotel, however, from installing all the modern amenities. It is very much like a little museum, as it used to be the Earl of Strathmore's dwelling place, hence the name. Indeed, there aren't any leisure-dedicated facilities within the hotel, but this only serves to educate and allow you to discover the town better! We recommend it to couples with no children.

As its name suggests, the Baglioni provides its guests with very Italian-inspired surroundings, despite its location at the heart of a truly British environment (including the weather!) at the centre of the upmarket borough of Kensington. Having said that, the welcome you'll receive from the staff and the decorative detail of the lobby alone are enough to take your mind off what the weather happens to be doing. The management team has put a great deal of thought into the decor of this place, from the communal areas to the guest rooms, making it an original 5 star establishment and a far cry from the traditional British hotel.

Don't let the appearance of this classical 19th century building fool you - although the inside is as elegant as its exterior facade, you're likely to find a few nice surprises in store. This may be due to the fact that this is no ordinary hotel! Instead, it is a 'large luxurious house', as the management likes to call it, located at the very heart of the elegant Kensington district and just a stone's throw from the park of the same name. You will definitely need to have a blank cheque book if you want to stay, or even just dine, at this 5 star establishment...

With its 38 rooms, the Cranley looks more like a large family residence than a hotel. There is neither a restaurant nor breakfast room; everything is served in your room or (in the case of tea or champagne) in the small reception-lounge area decorated in a completely traditional 100% English manner. It is primarily a recommended destination for couples, as the hotel does not offer much in the way of entertainment.

This is a comprehensive hotel that is likely to intimidate those who prefer things on a smaller scale.

In very much the same way as the opening of The Savoy caused tongues to wag furiously back in 1889 with its electricity, new fangled lifts and en suite bathrooms, the reopening after three years of renovation on 10th October 2010 was the biggest talking point in the British, if not world, hotel industry. Brought back to its full Art Deco and Edwardian glory, The Savoy is now bigger and better than ever. The jewel in the crown of London's hotels now has several new features and much of what came before has had a full face lift. Immaculate rooms, exquisite dining and the finest of décor make of The Savoy the only place to stay in this town. It proves that class is timeless.

The beautiful gothic St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, now almost 140 years old, is located right next to King's Cross St Pancras, which might not be in the most glamorous of neighbourhoods, but the hotel's 1800 period charm is unbeatable. The enormous hotel raised to the grey London skies with its stern-looking clock tower and turrets, looks extremely daunting, but once inside, the atmosphere is cosy and warm. A great place to stay for business people needing to be close to the station, but also a fun and unusual experience for leisure guests. The only hotel in the country to be built right on the railway, the St Pancras Renaissance is one of a kind; if you do not decide to stay here, try dropping in for a coffee or lunch at The Booking Office or Gilbert Scott.

The exclusive St. James's Hotel and Club is appropriately tucked away discreetly at the end of a cul-de-sac behind The Ritz on Piccadilly. While perhaps not quite of the same standing as its West End neighbour, the property is nonetheless a class act and has a history and following to rival that of any London hotel. The guestrooms are decorated and appointed to the highest standards and feature every amenity expected of a place like St. James's. As well as Michelin star dining and a service of the utmost attention to detail, the hotel still operates as a club to the rich and famous so you never know who you will be rubbing shoulders with when you stay here. More of a couples' or individual hotel, the St. James's is the place to come for intimacy, discretion and privacy.

While most of the edifice's original architectural features have been guarded, this has not been seen as an obstacle to introducing a highly contemporary design into the hugely spacious rooms, world-class restaurant and divine pool and gym. Add to this a unique art project, great service and a vibrant history and you get one of the most unconventional hotels in London.
