The 396-room 10 storey Royal Garden Hotel is a 'factory-hotel' that is currently undergoing major renovations (after some of the guest rooms, the lobby is next in line for a makeover). Located in an ultra trendy part of Kensington, the hotel prides itself on being the only establishment in London to boast a cosmetic surgery clinic combined with a well-being centre! This is a comprehensive hotel that is likely to intimidate those who prefer things on a smaller scale.

    Location 5.7 /10

The Royal Garden hotel stands on Kensington Road, just a few minutes from the High Street Kensington, Gloucester Road, and South Kensington tube stations, in the elegant borough of the same name. The famous Hyde Park is just a few minutes from the hotel and there is a shopping street a little further on, where tourists and locals flock to the boutiques, traditional pubs, restaurants, and fast food outlets. From the hotel, it only takes around 20 minutes to reach the centre of London and the main tourist attractions, as this borough is served by 2 underground train lines, the Circle Line and the District Line.

    Accommodation 7.60 /10

To give you some idea of the size of the hotel, you'll find it has 396 guest rooms, 37 suites (30 of which are different), a choice of 3 categories (Standard, Superior, and Deluxe), a floor area of at least 21m² in every room, and 2 different types of decor. The rooms on the top 4 floors have been renovated and now feature contemporary decor, whilst the more traditional rooms are also due to be renovated soon, to incorporate trendy lighting, darker wood, etc. All of the rooms have 2 phones (including one in the bathroom), a plasma screen television (coming to the older style rooms in March), a mini bar, tea and coffee-making facilities, iPhone speakers (and wall sockets), a safe, and a bathroom that is supplied with a selection of hospitality products, bathrobes, a hair dryer, and a bathtub.

    Overview 7.65 /10

Built in 1966, the hotel now stands on the site of the former royal orchard from which it gets its name. The lobby we see today is due to be reopened in a few months' time with a softer, more refined style, but in the meantime, a temporary reception hall has been set up in the basement level. Outside you'll find some lifts leading to the well-being centre, which, despite being open to residents only, is full right throughout the year. Patients come from all corners of the world for a consultation here, particularly from the Middle East. Having opened 4 years ago, the clinic notably offers Botox injections administered by a master of the procedure, Doctor Jules-Jacques Nabet. If surgery isn't something that interests you, you could always try out one of the treatment rooms, the sauna, the hammam, the Pilates studio, or the gym; who knows, you might even be lucky enough to have a session with Lady Diana's former trainer, Carolyn Brown.

    Food and drink 7.95 /10

Not content with having renovated the guest rooms, the management has also decided to revamp the restaurant part of the hotel. Having opened in September 2008, the fantastic Chinese bar-restaurant on the top floor, the Min Jiang, offers stunning views across Hyde Park and serves up a variety of equally wonderful dishes. The hotel's philosophy is, after all, to feed the body and the soul. The Peking duck and the peppered beef are worth a special mention. In addition to the main dining room there is also a private room that can accommodate around 10 diners and the decor alone is worth a look, as the inventive use of many mirrors and open spaces is particularly clever. A new Italian restaurant is due to open in the near future and the hotel also boasts 3 bars, including a night bar.

    To know

Spurred on by the drive (and money!) of its owners (a Singaporean family of Chinese origin), the hotel has been evolving and changing very quickly in order to appeal to all types of clientele. The Royal Garden also houses a casino that is run by an external company, which is compulsory in the UK these days.

If you are an enthusiast of contemporary hotels, this one certainly isn't for you! As this used to be the Queen Mum's residence, it is of course listed as a historical monument, which means that nothing in the building can be altered... This didn't stop the hotel, however, from installing all the modern amenities. It is very much like a little museum, as it used to be the Earl of Strathmore's dwelling place, hence the name. Indeed, there aren't any leisure-dedicated facilities within the hotel, but this only serves to educate and allow you to discover the town better! We recommend it to couples with no children.

As its name suggests, the Baglioni provides its guests with very Italian-inspired surroundings, despite its location at the heart of a truly British environment (including the weather!) at the centre of the upmarket borough of Kensington. Having said that, the welcome you'll receive from the staff and the decorative detail of the lobby alone are enough to take your mind off what the weather happens to be doing. The management team has put a great deal of thought into the decor of this place, from the communal areas to the guest rooms, making it an original 5 star establishment and a far cry from the traditional British hotel.

Described by the British media as the capital's most romantic hotel, the Gore is also believed to be the most photographed. Light years away from the anonymous hotel chains commonly found in large cities, this establishment provides intimate surroundings not unlike those you would expect to find at a guesthouse. Located between the exclusive districts of Knightsbridge and Kensington, the facilities offered by the Gore are every bit worthy of its 5 star rating, making it ideal for special (and even not so special) occasions! It is particularly recommended for couples without children, as there are no facilities to cater for younger guests.

Don't let the appearance of this classical 19th century building fool you - although the inside is as elegant as its exterior facade, you're likely to find a few nice surprises in store. This may be due to the fact that this is no ordinary hotel! Instead, it is a 'large luxurious house', as the management likes to call it, located at the very heart of the elegant Kensington district and just a stone's throw from the park of the same name. You will definitely need to have a blank cheque book if you want to stay, or even just dine, at this 5 star establishment...

In very much the same way as the opening of The Savoy caused tongues to wag furiously back in 1889 with its electricity, new fangled lifts and en suite bathrooms, the reopening after three years of renovation on 10th October 2010 was the biggest talking point in the British, if not world, hotel industry. Brought back to its full Art Deco and Edwardian glory, The Savoy is now bigger and better than ever. The jewel in the crown of London's hotels now has several new features and much of what came before has had a full face lift. Immaculate rooms, exquisite dining and the finest of décor make of The Savoy the only place to stay in this town. It proves that class is timeless.

The beautiful gothic St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, now almost 140 years old, is located right next to King's Cross St Pancras, which might not be in the most glamorous of neighbourhoods, but the hotel's 1800 period charm is unbeatable. The enormous hotel raised to the grey London skies with its stern-looking clock tower and turrets, looks extremely daunting, but once inside, the atmosphere is cosy and warm. A great place to stay for business people needing to be close to the station, but also a fun and unusual experience for leisure guests. The only hotel in the country to be built right on the railway, the St Pancras Renaissance is one of a kind; if you do not decide to stay here, try dropping in for a coffee or lunch at The Booking Office or Gilbert Scott.

The exclusive St. James's Hotel and Club is appropriately tucked away discreetly at the end of a cul-de-sac behind The Ritz on Piccadilly. While perhaps not quite of the same standing as its West End neighbour, the property is nonetheless a class act and has a history and following to rival that of any London hotel. The guestrooms are decorated and appointed to the highest standards and feature every amenity expected of a place like St. James's. As well as Michelin star dining and a service of the utmost attention to detail, the hotel still operates as a club to the rich and famous so you never know who you will be rubbing shoulders with when you stay here. More of a couples' or individual hotel, the St. James's is the place to come for intimacy, discretion and privacy.

This former town hall in East London represents one of the most remarkable transformations of any building in the capital. While most of the edifice's original architectural features have been guarded, this has not been seen as an obstacle to introducing a highly contemporary design into the hugely spacious rooms, world-class restaurant and divine pool and gym. Add to this a unique art project, great service and a vibrant history and you get one of the most unconventional hotels in London. Recommended for all types of traveller, especially those who are tired of staying in the town centre and are looking for an alternative location.
