The Berkeley is one of the best hotels for a weekend dedicated to food and shopping in the upscale suburbs of London. Its rates may be high, but it is the perfect place to book for special occasions.

    Location 5.31 /10

On Wilton Place, a 5-minute walk away from the underground station of Knightsbridge. Anticipate 10 minutes on the underground to reach the city centre (direct Piccadilly line to Covent Garden).

    Accommodation 9.20 /10

The Berkeley has 214 rooms, including 65 suites. It is worth noting the excellence of 3 "conservatory suites" on the 5th floor, each of which has a terrace with a veranda area and an open-air area. Another remarkable feature is the attic rooms whose windows - near the bed and the bathroom - offer spectacular views of the surrounding wooded area. In terms of accommodation, the Berkeley stands out for its clean contemporary style (light-coloured walls, varnished wood furniture), traditional design (pleated shades, draperies on the windows, classical style furniture) and Art Deco audacity (wood panels with medallions, wallpaper, carpet and brightly coloured armchairs). Comfort is provided by the amenities available, the only thing missing is tea / coffee-making facilities. Everything is planned out, from the wide-screen television to the Internet and the magnificent bathrooms have a shower and a bathtub, a hair-dryer, bathrobes and a beautiful basket full of hospitality products. Be aware though that standard rooms are not very large (16m²), those who would prefer more space should reserve a suite.

    Overview 9.45 /10

Opened in 1972, the Berkeley saw its infrastructure most recently renovated in 2004 with the opening of two restaurants: Boxwood Cafe and Petrus. Situated on a small square on the outskirts of Knightsbridge, it offers tranquillity, good service, and comfort in luxury surroundings. With understated decor, much attention is paid to detail; it is decorated with mahogany and figurative paintings and the hotel's lounge area is styled like an English mansion. On both sides of the entrance, restaurants and bars await the visitors and on the top floor (there are eight floors in total), you will find the swimming pool with its movable roof-cover out of which you can see the surrounding area (old buildings and green spaces). This detail is worth noting: there are few London hotels that have a swimming pool. Weather permitting, you can relax on the adjacent patio, abound with green vegetation, whose high walls provide privacy for customers. A gym next to the swimming pool also affords views.

    Food and drink 9.70 /10

The restaurants of the Berkeley alone are a reason to stay at the hotel. Those who enjoy their food can taste faultless dinners at Pétrus, where Marcus Wareing prepares the tasty 'master-piece' menus which earned him a distinction from the Michelin guide. The wine list is also superb (refer to it if you wish to try a glass of wine from Chile, Australia or South Africa) and the decoration, in burgundy tones, is as exquisite as the accompanying dishes. Food lovers looking for more affordable prices, however, can drop in at the Boxwood Café. Done out in a in a New York City-style atmosphere, you can taste hamburgers with foie gras here or Cornish braised lamb with rosemary polenta. These are just two of the many creations by Gordon Ramsay, chef at the Boxwood Café. In the morning, continental breakfast is served as a buffet in a windowed room. Hot dishes, such as scrambled eggs and bacon are available for an extra charge. It is also in this room, called the Caramel Room, that you can take your afternoon tea. Fashionistas will be tempted by the Prêt-à-Portea, a top array of cakes, rich in colours and different shapes. It is not the option to choose if you prefer a traditional afternoon tea though!

    To know

The hotel is well situated for exploring the chic shops lining the West End. The department store Harvey Nichols is only a 5-minute walk away from the hotel, on Sloane Street (where all the big names in fashion can be found, such as Prada, Gucci and Dior, among others). Another unavoidable address for shopping: the department store Harrods, some 10 minutes walk from the hotel, on Brompton Road.

This 5 star establishment was built in the 70s and affords some of the best views of the city. The hotel's 219 guest rooms are spacious and well lit, but its main asset is undoubtedly its location, in a pleasant neighbourhood of the English capital.

Having been built in 1931, the Dorchester is a real London institution, and at nearly 80 years old, this extremely respectable establishment has never looked so good! A whole host of new features have been added to the hotel over the past few years, including a brand new ultra modern spa complete with a restaurant and an Alain Ducasse establishment featuring uber-stylish decor, all without affecting the bygone decor that gives the hotel its charm and for which it is renowned. With three Michelin stars to its name for the fifth year in a row, this all comes at a price...

The Tophams is located just 2 streets away from Victoria station and was, in fact, born to be a hotel, having launched its career as early as the end of World War II. The 5 original Victorian houses were transformed into a single private hotel that was later bought out in 2006 by the Ebury Court Hotel group and reopened in the summer of 2008, following a two-year closure, in its brand new form. It has since become part of the popular circle of 4 star boutique hotels in London.

The much-hyped 'CUT at 45 Park Lane', London's first steak restaurant (just don't call it a steakhouse!) and celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck's first European venture.

The legendary luxury Italian jeweller, Bulgari, opens his third hotel worldwide after Milan and Bali. Following the same - very stylish - lines as the original Bulgari hotel in Milan, the 78-room London hotel is run by Ritz-Carlton, and delivers the promise of a luxury affair, complete with private holistic spa, swimming pool and hydrotherapy steam rooms. Designer Antonio Citterio, responsible for the Milan hotel, has come up with the interior design for the guest rooms at the Knightsbridge hotel, while architects Squire and Partners are responsible for delivery of the project. Silver is a central theme of the design, drawing on Bulgari's history with silversmiths and jewellery, and the theme influences the design of all the public spaces and bedrooms. The hotel also includes six luxury apartments, a restaurant at lower ground level with a sweeping staircase supported by a silver lit balustrade, a lounge, bar and spirit room.

In very much the same way as the opening of The Savoy caused tongues to wag furiously back in 1889 with its electricity, new fangled lifts and en suite bathrooms, the reopening after three years of renovation on 10th October 2010 was the biggest talking point in the British, if not world, hotel industry. Brought back to its full Art Deco and Edwardian glory, The Savoy is now bigger and better than ever. The jewel in the crown of London's hotels now has several new features and much of what came before has had a full face lift. Immaculate rooms, exquisite dining and the finest of décor make of The Savoy the only place to stay in this town. It proves that class is timeless.

The beautiful gothic St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, now almost 140 years old, is located right next to King's Cross St Pancras, which might not be in the most glamorous of neighbourhoods, but the hotel's 1800 period charm is unbeatable. The enormous hotel raised to the grey London skies with its stern-looking clock tower and turrets, looks extremely daunting, but once inside, the atmosphere is cosy and warm. A great place to stay for business people needing to be close to the station, but also a fun and unusual experience for leisure guests. The only hotel in the country to be built right on the railway, the St Pancras Renaissance is one of a kind; if you do not decide to stay here, try dropping in for a coffee or lunch at The Booking Office or Gilbert Scott.

The exclusive St. James's Hotel and Club is appropriately tucked away discreetly at the end of a cul-de-sac behind The Ritz on Piccadilly. While perhaps not quite of the same standing as its West End neighbour, the property is nonetheless a class act and has a history and following to rival that of any London hotel. The guestrooms are decorated and appointed to the highest standards and feature every amenity expected of a place like St. James's. As well as Michelin star dining and a service of the utmost attention to detail, the hotel still operates as a club to the rich and famous so you never know who you will be rubbing shoulders with when you stay here. More of a couples' or individual hotel, the St. James's is the place to come for intimacy, discretion and privacy.

Don't let the appearance of this classical 19th century building fool you - although the inside is as elegant as its exterior facade, you're likely to find a few nice surprises in store. This may be due to the fact that this is no ordinary hotel! Instead, it is a 'large luxurious house', as the management likes to call it, located at the very heart of the elegant Kensington district and just a stone's throw from the park of the same name. While most of the edifice's original architectural features have been guarded, this has not been seen as an obstacle to introducing a highly contemporary design into the hugely spacious rooms, world-class restaurant and divine pool and gym. Add to this a unique art project, great service and a vibrant history and you get one of the most unconventional hotels in London. Recommended for all types of traveller, especially those who are tired of staying in the town centre and are looking for an alternative location.
