After being closed for over a year and a half, this mythic luxury hotel reopened its doors in 2008 following major renovations. This establishment is without question a living legend and has hosted a fair few celebrities over the years, many of whom would now have difficulty recognising the place since its major makeover. The Langham also took advantage of this time to build a fantastic brand new spa. In a nutshell, this is a great place to stay (provided you have the means) or even just to visit if you happen to be passing by!

    Location 5.85 /10

Located in a strategic part of the city, just a few minutes from Oxford Circus station, the Langham could hardly have found a better location; partly because it offers easy access to London's main attractions, and partly because it is served by 3 tube lines: the Bakerloo, the Central, and the Victoria lines. You really do have literally everything you need (including a cinema, shops, restaurants, and bars) close at hand.

    Accommodation 8.80 /10

Upstairs, meanwhile, the hotel has an equally dizzying effect, perhaps because of the very wide corridors (which were essential in bygone days when ladies wore huge princess-like gowns) or perhaps because of the numbers involved (which speak for themselves): 380 guest rooms providing no fewer than 12 different categories of accommodation! If you've already been lucky enough to stay at the Langham, you'll find it hard to recognise the new rooms; everything from the furniture, lighting, carpets, and decor down to the very last detail was changed! As you would expect of a luxury hotel, the decor is still classical in style, but with a significant contemporary twist. As for amenities, you'll find everything in its place, including a California bed, flat screen television, individual air conditioning, Wifi Internet (£20 for 24 hours), safe, minibar, and bathroom with Langham hospitality products, shower/bathtub, hair dryer, bathrobes, marble wash basin, etc.

    Overview 8.95 /10

It's difficult to pass by this establishment without noticing it as you're going down the street. The titanic dimensions of the building are rather striking and the elegant facade is eye-catching. What is far easier to miss, however, is the main entrance, with the hotel's frontage spanning around 10 metres. Elegant background music and smart modern decor welcome arriving guests and (numerous) visitors who venture into this historic hotel for a look around. The reception is hidden to the right. The harmonious surroundings are complemented by the wonderful spa that was opened in late 2009. It features everything you could want: a magnificent 15m pool, a sauna, a hammam, and a large gym. The Langham also boasts a business centre complete with 4 computers.

    Food and drink 9.05 /10

Of course, the Langham wouldn't really be the Langham without its restaurant, which is essential in a luxury establishment of this calibre. Both guests and non-residents will be spoilt for choice here with the hotel's various eateries. The Landau serves European cuisine with a contemporary twist and is open from breakfast through to dinner, with a selection of fine dishes served in an exquisite setting. The Artesian, meanwhile, offers more oriental, intimate, and subdued surroundings, and features a few original aspects, such as the crocodile-skin chairs! Finally, the lounge is open from 9:00am to 9:00pm and serves breakfast and tea in a more traditionally British setting. Guests can also order snacks from the hotel bar.

    To know

The hotel is celebrating 146 years of good and faithful service this year. You won't find any redevelopment here, as the Langham was built from floor to ceiling but has taken over surrounding buildings over the years. The hotel belongs to the Langham Hotels International group, whose head office is located thousands of miles away in Hong Kong. It is only available on a room-only basis, though packages are sometimes available...

The Sanderson is one of those hotels in the world that you just have to stay at, at least once. It is a must for its unusual decoration (not that of a classic hotel) and 'way out there' atmosphere, whether you stay to dine or have a drink. Wealthy regulars will spend several nights here.

Those with an interest in the past take note: the Clairidge's history is an integral part of the history of England! Having opened in 1854, the hotel regularly plays host to members of the Royal Family. How the hotel functions, however, has changed somewhat since the early days, when the owners rented out the rooms for 6 months and then returned to the countryside. Rest assured, though, the hotel is open all year round these days! The past plays a significant role in all aspects of Claridge's, from the communal areas to the guest rooms, even though the latter now come complete with all the modern conveniences you would expect of a 5 star establishment. In a nutshell, this hotel comes highly recommended to all those who have the means to stay there!

Standing in the very desirable Piccadilly district, the appropriately named Soho Sanctum Hotel opened the doors of its sanctuary in summer 2009. You won't need a spa and a host of massage treatments to feel good here though. The small scale of the hotel, its meticulous decor, and the impeccable service provided are enough to relax the body, mind, and soul. This small hotel will appeal to all types of clientele and particularly young couples.

Sandwiched between Regents Park to the north and Hyde Park to the south, The Marylebone Hotel is an exceptional property in the heart of the area whose name it bears. The perfect luxury base for a stay in the capital, the hotel has a winning combination of outstanding service, excellently appointed spacious rooms and suites and an impressive wellness centre all within a sumptuously decorated setting. The final element to the hotel is the buzzing bar and restaurant, 108 Marylebone Lane, a good, honest British eatery which is perhaps not quite at the same level of sophistication as the rest of the property. We enjoyed our stay here immensely and urge you to give it a try on your next trip to London, whether that be for business or pleasure.

This legendary chain hotel, which has stood at the heart of the British capital for over a century, really needs no introduction. This uber-famous chain has only 3 European hotels, namely in Madrid, Paris, and London. Although they all are run independently of each other, they all share an exciting history and provide ultra-chic surroundings, from the communal areas to the huge guest rooms. Do be aware though, that if you're planning on visiting this legendary establishment, if only to partake of its traditional afternoon tea, you will need to show your credentials, be appropriately dressed, and have a nice full wallet.

In very much the same way as the opening of The Savoy caused tongues to wag furiously back in 1889 with its electricity, new fangled lifts and en suite bathrooms, the reopening after three years of renovation on 10th October 2010 was the biggest talking point in the British, if not world, hotel industry. Brought back to its full Art Deco and Edwardian glory, The Savoy is now bigger and better than ever. The jewel in the crown of London's hotels now has several new features and much of what came before has had a full face lift. Immaculate rooms, exquisite dining and the finest of décor make of The Savoy the only place to stay in this town. It proves that class is timeless.

The beautiful gothic St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, now almost 140 years old, is located right next to King's Cross St Pancras, which might not be in the most glamorous of neighbourhoods, but the hotel's 1800 period charm is unbeatable. The enormous hotel raised to the grey London skies with its stern-looking clock tower and turrets, looks extremely daunting, but once inside, the atmosphere is cosy and warm. A great place to stay for business people needing to be close to the station, but also a fun and unusual experience for leisure guests. The only hotel in the country to be built right on the railway, the St Pancras Renaissance is one of a kind; if you do not decide to stay here, try dropping in for a coffee or lunch at The Booking Office or Gilbert Scott.

The exclusive St. James's Hotel and Club is appropriately tucked away discreetly at the end of a cul-de-sac behind The Ritz on Piccadilly. While perhaps not quite of the same standing as its West End neighbour, the property is nonetheless a class act and has a history and following to rival that of any London hotel. The guestrooms are decorated and appointed to the highest standards and feature every amenity expected of a place like St. James's. As well as Michelin star dining and a service of the utmost attention to detail, the hotel still operates as a club to the rich and famous so you never know who you will be rubbing shoulders with when you stay here. More of a couples' or individual hotel, the St. James's is the place to come for intimacy, discretion and privacy.

Don't let the appearance of this classical 19th century building fool you - although the inside is as elegant as its exterior facade, you're likely to find a few nice surprises in store. This may be due to the fact that this is no ordinary hotel! Instead, it is a 'large luxurious house', as the management likes to call it, located at the very heart of the elegant Kensington district and just a stone's throw from the park of the same name. You will definitely need to have a blank cheque book if you want to stay, or even just dine, at this 5 star establishment...

While most of the edifice's original architectural features have been guarded, this has not been seen as an obstacle to introducing a highly contemporary design into the hugely spacious rooms, world-class restaurant and divine pool and gym. Add to this a unique art project, great service and a vibrant history and you get one of the most unconventional hotels in London. Recommended for all types of traveller, especially those who are tired of staying in the town centre and are looking for an alternative location.
