Amy Adejokun Section editor

The Washington Mayfair dates back to 1913. Renovated since (and on a regular basis), the hotel has fortunately retained its original Art Deco exterior appearance. It is now mixed with a contemporary decor and vintage Asian decorative features found by the owners and placed in various parts of the hotel's common areas. This hotel guarantees a lovely stay, whether you are in London on business or for a leisure break...

    Location 5.93 /10

Two streets away from Green Park (and the underground station that goes by the same name), the Washington Mayfair Hotel stands on the very chic Curzon Street. Within the exclusive Mayfair district of London, it is located just a few minutes away from most of London's curiosities, namely Hyde Park, Buckingham Palace, Bond Street, Oxford Street, Regent Street, etc, and the shops that simply can't be avoided (Harrod's, and others found in Knightsbridge). On foot or by underground (Piccadilly Line, Victoria Line and Jubilee Line), you can access anything you want within the blink of an eye.

    Accommodation 8.05 /10

Each of the 171 guest rooms is different from the next in terms of size and layout, but the decor is the same in all of them with a modern Art Deco ambience. Several room categories are available: classic, executive, state, junior suites, executive studio suites, and master suites. Note that, among all Mayfair 4-star hotels, the Washington Mayfair has the largest standard rooms. Some are very bright with natural light (in the event of a sunny day!) thanks to their large bay windows. They are all equipped with a queen size bed, a minibar, tea and coffee-making facilities, a trouser press, a plasma screen television, a safe, free Internet access, and a stylish and contemporary bathroom with a square wash basin, orange tiles on the walls, a hair dryer, Gold Crest hospitality products, a towel warmer, bathrobes, a bathtub, and a telephone.

    Overview 7.75 /10

In the long, all-marble lobby, you will see a collection of red and orange leather sofas, as well as a great deal of Asian ornaments, such as the statue of a rooster. As retro as it is contemporary, the ambience certainly isn't without charm... The concierge desk is by the front door, while the reception is on the right. The facilities are few: a small business centre and a gym. Massages are also available on request...

    Food and drink 7.65 /10

Set up at the back of the lobby, the only restaurant serves all 3 meals of the day in separate areas: a classic room with a capacity of 100 guests is used for breakfast, while lunch and dinner are served (on blue plates!) in another room with a capacity of 40. Breakfast is served as a buffet, whilst international dishes are served à la carte for lunch and dinner. Keep in mind that a 3-course meal (for lunch) will cost you about £20. Next to the restaurant, the main bar serves alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks in a typically British setting: mismatched leather armchairs, a grand piano, etc.

    To know

Opened just before the beginning of the Great War, the hotel was requisitioned soon after by the ladies of the United Services Club who turned it into a base camp. After the war, the Washington Mayfair resumed its original function, soon becoming the hotel to be! In the 1950's, many celebrities of the time stayed there, such as the Italian painter Pietro Annigoni, the actress Tallulah Bankhead, and the singer David Whitfield.

Those who seek a quiet place full of charm would choose the Park Lane Mews without hesitation. Indeed, it is well-situated in a quiet area, and its traditional ambience is in fact much more than simply a hotel of international standing : a hotel of certain charm.

Those with an interest in the past take note: the Clairidge's history is an integral part of the history of England! Having opened in 1854, the hotel regularly plays host to members of the Royal Family. How the hotel functions, however, has changed somewhat since the early days, when the owners rented out the rooms for 6 months and then returned to the countryside. Rest assured, though, the hotel is open all year round these days! The past plays a significant role in all aspects of Claridge's, from the communal areas to the guest rooms, even though the latter now come complete with all the modern conveniences you would expect of a 5 star establishment. In a nutshell, this hotel comes highly recommended to all those who have the means to stay there!

The exclusive St. James's Hotel and Club is appropriately tucked away discreetly at the end of a cul-de-sac behind The Ritz on Piccadilly. While perhaps not quite of the same standing as its West End neighbour, the property is nonetheless a class act and has a history and following to rival that of any London hotel. The guestrooms are decorated and appointed to the highest standards and feature every amenity expected of a place like St. James's. As well as Michelin star dining and a service of the utmost attention to detail, the hotel still operates as a club to the rich and famous so you never know who you will be rubbing shoulders with when you stay here. More of a couples' or individual hotel, the St. James's is the place to come for intimacy, discretion and privacy.

The first hotel to have opened its doors in the British capital, Brown's Hotel can also boast the fact it was immortalised in the Agatha Christie novel 'At Bertram's Hotel'! The premises have somewhat changed, however, since the days when the famous writer stayed here. Having been built in 1931, the Dorchester is a real London institution, and at nearly 80 years old, this extremely respectable establishment has never looked so good! A whole host of new features have been added to the hotel over the past few years, including a brand new ultra modern spa complete with a restaurant and an Alain Ducasse establishment featuring uber-stylish decor, all without affecting the bygone decor that gives the hotel its charm and for which it is renowned. With three Michelin stars to its name for the fifth year in a row, this all comes at a price...

This legendary chain hotel, which has stood at the heart of the British capital for over a century, really needs no introduction. This uber-famous chain has only 3 European hotels, namely in Madrid, Paris, and London. Although they all are run independently of each other, they all share an exciting history and provide ultra-chic surroundings, from the communal areas to the huge guest rooms. Do be aware though, that if you're planning on visiting this legendary establishment, if only to partake of its traditional afternoon tea, you will need to show your credentials, be appropriately dressed, and have a nice full wallet.

The ninth hotel to be added to the Dorchester Collection boasts subtle luxury and a fantastic location in Mayfair. Opened in 2011, the five-star 45 Park Lane attracts fashionable young things from London and further afield. The star of the show though? The much-hyped 'CUT at 45 Park Lane', London's first steak restaurant (just don't call it a steakhouse!) and celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck's first European venture.

In very much the same way as the opening of The Savoy caused tongues to wag furiously back in 1889 with its electricity, new fangled lifts and en suite bathrooms, the reopening after three years of renovation on 10th October 2010 was the biggest talking point in the British, if not world, hotel industry. Brought back to its full Art Deco and Edwardian glory, The Savoy is now bigger and better than ever. The jewel in the crown of London's hotels now has several new features and much of what came before has had a full face lift. Immaculate rooms, exquisite dining and the finest of décor make of The Savoy the only place to stay in this town. It proves that class is timeless.

The beautiful gothic St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, now almost 140 years old, is located right next to King's Cross St Pancras, which might not be in the most glamorous of neighbourhoods, but the hotel's 1800 period charm is unbeatable. The enormous hotel raised to the grey London skies with its stern-looking clock tower and turrets, looks extremely daunting, but once inside, the atmosphere is cosy and warm. A great place to stay for business people needing to be close to the station, but also a fun and unusual experience for leisure guests. The only hotel in the country to be built right on the railway, the St Pancras Renaissance is one of a kind; if you do not decide to stay here, try dropping in for a coffee or lunch at The Booking Office or Gilbert Scott.

Don't let the appearance of this classical 19th century building fool you - although the inside is as elegant as its exterior facade, you're likely to find a few nice surprises in store. This may be due to the fact that this is no ordinary hotel! Instead, it is a 'large luxurious house', as the management likes to call it, located at the very heart of the elegant Kensington district and just a stone's throw from the park of the same name. This former town hall in East London represents one of the most remarkable transformations of any building in the capital. While most of the edifice's original architectural features have been guarded, this has not been seen as an obstacle to introducing a highly contemporary design into the hugely spacious rooms, world-class restaurant and divine pool and gym. Add to this a unique art project, great service and a vibrant history and you get one of the most unconventional hotels in London. Recommended for all types of traveller, especially those who are tired of staying in the town centre and are looking for an alternative location.
