This late 1920s property was actually purpose built as a hotel, the Governor Clinton, and thankfully much of the Old World character from that time has been retained. It is similar in many way to its sister hotels, however the Manhattan has got a little more glitz and glam about it and has probably the best location of them all, being as it is right in middle of everything. It is a large hotel (526 rooms) and so can get quite busy, but is a great option for families especially if you want a hotel with a buzz about it and, as is usual for Affinias, a lot of space.

    Location 7.49 /10

The Affinia Manhattan has a great location on 7th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, right by the Theatre District. It is just one block from Broadway, two from 5th Avenue and three from Madison Avenue. Madison Square Gardens is steps away while Times Square is just a short walk up Fashion Avenue. Penn Station is also right nearby and 33rd Street metro station is a block away. JFK airport is 17 miles away, La Guardia 9 miles and Newark just 14.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The Manhattan's 526 rooms are divided into four types: guest room, studio, one bedroom and two bedroom suites. The guest room is uncharacteristically small for an Affinia hotel but is not at all cramped. The room itself has a queen bed and drawer unit with television on top. Similar to the other Affinias the colours are sober but allow lots of natural light inside. You'll find a safe and iron and ironing board in the room. The white tiled bathroom is also fairly small but has a bathtub and hairdryer as well as Aveda toiletries. For more of an apartment feel go for the studio which has a living area and the option of two double beds. The desk in the room rolls out to become a dining table and there is a kitchenette equipped with a cooker and fridge. The two suites both have separate salons and therefore slightly smaller bedrooms. The one bedroom can accommodate up to four people while the two bedroom can take up to six.

    Overview 8.70 /10

Fittingly for a hotel in this location, the façade features the kind of entrance you'd expect of a theatre with its overhang light with bare light bulbs. The lobby, in whose grandeur the hotel's size is reflected, was refurbished in 2008 by David Rockwell who has managed to update it without losing the 1920s feel. Two huge chandeliers encircled by some transparent material swoop down and dominate the lobby, which is centered around the hexagonal Metro concierge desk, permanently 'manned' by two staff, often women. To the right of the hall are the reception desks while to the left is a seating area. To the back of the lobby, up a small set of stairs, is the lift bank, each elevator with beautiful bronze-relief doors. You definitely get the feeling if you hang around in the lobby long enough that you are in New York. The Fitness Center is on the Mezzanine level and features a range of cardio machines with individual screens, weights machines and free weights. The hotel does not have a spa, although you can arrange in-room wellness through the SPAffinia programme and for those working, there is a business centre for guests' use. While the lobby is impressive, other parts of the hotel, such as the corridors, are sombre and in need of a lick of paint.

    Food and drink 7.95 /10

Niles Restaurant and Bar is located next to the hotel and is about as far away in terms of design from the hotel as could be. Modern, streamline and trendy, the front half houses the bar while a back is the dining room. The oblong bar stretches almost from one end of the room to the other and is illuminated from beneath. You can choose to sit round the bar on a stool, at one of the tables surrounding it or at the mirrored wall to the right hand side of the bar as you walk in. The restaurant, also in a long room, is lit not only by regular lamps but also by green, purple and blue strip lights giving an almost exclusive air to the eatery. Look out for the rather fun set of caricatures of various American political figures including George Bush, Rudolph Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg. Niles is open all day and serves breakfast (continental as well as hot), brunch (eggs, pancakes, salads, sandwiches, pizza and pastas), lunch (salads, burgers, meat and fish) and dinner (pizza, pasta, fish and steaks). At night the bar comes alive with guests, locals and tourists alike, especially pre- and post-theatre.

    To know

Affinia Manhattan is part of the Affinia Group which includes four sister hotels in New York (Affinia 50, Affinia Dumont, Affinia Gardens and Affinia Shelburne) as well as four affiliate hotels (Eastgate Tower Hotel, Surrey Hotel, The Benjamin and The Buckingham). Each of the Affinias offers complimentary 'Experience Kits' to help you customize your stay. Guests can all customize their stay by choosing one of six pillow types and adding such items as rubber ducks, putters or cupcakes to their room thanks to the My Affinia application found both on the hotel's website and at computer stations in the hotel lobby. Many of the Manhattan's staff have been with the hotel a long while which helps to create a family atmosphere and gives a personal touch. For the next few years the Manhattan will be official hotel of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, so you may want to avoid the last week of November as it will be chaos!

The Indigo is a mid-range full service hotel (minus the spa) in the Fashion District of Manhattan. Although its rooms are starting to show their age in terms of décor, they are in perfect condition and very spacious for Midtown and are fairly well-appointed. The restaurant, which has changed hands a number of times since the hotel's opening, now seems to have found stability and is a decent option for a bite to eat at any time of the day. The fitness centre, complimentary business centre and panoramic rooftop bar make of the Indigo a good all round option if you prefer to be away from the busier parts of town but still within walking distance of the major attractions.

Owner Alex Calderwood said he wasn't interested in being trendy, he just wanted to create an instant classic. Well, he has achieved both, whether he likes it or not. One of the most original, innovative and inspired hotels you'll see anywhere, let alone in New York, the Ace is a masterpiece from top to bottom that will attract backpackers, groups of friends and couples alike. Every aspect, and we mean every aspect, has been meticulously mulled over from the name of the hotel itself (see 'To Know' section) to the iron board covers' wording. Effortlessness and a carefree attitude seem to be the dominating characteristics of the hotel as can be witnessed from the borderline too-cool-for-school porters and the auto flush loos in the public WC. Indeed, as the caption on the stairs leading back to the lobby from the aforementioned services reassures, "Everything is going to be alright."

While this is a decent property with some spacious rooms, attentive staff and some unique quirks, we found it to be lacking soul and bordering on kitsch. Located in the fashion district of Manhattan, the designers have attempted to make this the theme of the hotel and while some may find their efforts quaint, we feel they make the property seem a little cheap. Having said that, it appears to be a well-run place, with clean accommodation with some good views and its location could be a lot worse. It would be suitable for both business and leisure travellers, although you could probably do better for the same money.

Staying at the Eventi is one of the best hotel experiences you can have in New York - the hotel just oozes coolness. But not that snooty, exclusive, look-at-me type of cool you find in some properties. This is genuine, fun, down-to-earth cool which makes the hotel such an enjoyable place to stay. Every element of the hotel has been well conceived from the spacious, funky rooms to the buzzing, good quality restaurant, from the professional spa to the most personable of staff. This well located, modern hotel has an identity of its own which is hard to beat for the money. Highly recommended!

      Q. What do you get when you take $150 million and put them into the hands of one of the world's greatest architect/designers? A. The Mark. Be under no illusions, what Jacques Grange and co have conceived in the leafy surroundings of the Upper Eastside is now the yardstick against which all other hotels will now have to measure themselves. After over two years under renovation with some of the most sought after names in the creative fields working on the project, The Mark has transformed itself from a decent hotel to a hotel of superlatives. Everything is top draw from the design to the staff, from the food to the wellness centre. This all, of course, comes with the price tag that its quality demands, however rest assured that no other hotel can come close to what The Mark has to offer.

We're going to stick our necks out here and say that of all the hotels we have stayed at in this city, the Setai probably takes top spot. Of course there are many different types of hotel in the city and not everyone is looking for what the Setai has to offer, but as on overall experience, it can't, in our opinion, be bettered. The rooms are not only some of the biggest in the city, but they are likely to be the best appointed in terms of amenities too. The stunning, contemporary spa is as luxurious as it is spacious and in its restaurant the hotel has one of most memorable dining experiences to be had. But what impressed us most, and where the hotel rises above it competitors, is the consistent attention to detail and impeccable service the likes of which we've never seen. Although new (November 2010 opening), this is right up there with the old masters and the best thing is that it can only get better!

Let's not mince our words; The Peninsula is quite simply one of the finest hotels in New York, even more so now it is the other side of a renovation. From the very first moment you enter the hotel you'll have no doubt about the quality of experience that awaits you. There is very little to pick holes at here where excellence comes as standard: the large rooms are finely furnished, the restaurants of the highest caliber, the spa one of the most beautiful and complete in the city and the service faultless. Like all top class hotels this all comes at a certain price, however if there was ever one hotel which could justify the cost it would be this one.

The very few flaws of the hotel (for example the size of some bathrooms) can be excused by its age; otherwise there are very few hotels of this genre which can claim to offer a similar experience. Not only does it offer top notch service and facilities, but its location and commanding views are also something spectacular. It is true to say that it may not have some of the facilities of some of the other top hotels (no spa, smaller rooms), but when it comes to service, style and sophistication, not to mention history, it is untouchable. With a location that would make most hotels weep with envy, fabulously appointed rooms with an Asian touch and a new, top quality restaurant, The Pierre is back on top of its game and ready to welcome once again all types of traveller, no matter their motive for visiting the city.
