Although it has a great central location and other pulls such as a rooftop bar and busy restaurant, the bits that most people are really interested in, the accommodation and service, fall short. Some of the rooms, are incredibly small and desperately needed updating (during our visit in February 2013), it seems as if the personnel have better things to do with their time and parts of the property are poorly maintained. There are no particularly good views to be had from the rooms and some are not very well appointed although the newly renovated guestrooms we saw were a huge improvement. The Amsterdam Court might be one of the cheaper hotels in New York but in our opinion there are better deals to be had elsewhere for couples and families looking for a central location.

    Location 9.32 /10

Despite its flaws, one cannot quibble over the fact that the Amsterdam Court is excellently situated on West 50th Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue. If visiting the most famous of Manhattan's monuments is what you are in the city for then you could not be better placed. In close proximity to the hotel you will find Times Square, the Rockefeller Center, the theatres of Broadway, Grand Central, New York Public Library, Columbus Circle and Bryant and Central Parks. There are several subway stations too in the immediate vicinity of the hotel which between them have a choice of lines which will take you to wherever you need to go in the city. JFK is 17 miles away, La Guardia 9 miles and Newark 16.

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

The hotel is made up of 136 guestrooms which at the time of our visit were in the process of being renovated. The old rooms (of which there may still be some) were somewhat basic affairs with simple furniture, few amenities and poor bedding. The newer rooms, however, were a vast improvement. Mainly in black and white, with a custom carpet, they feature either a queen or king bed dressed in white linens with studded bedside tables and reading lamps. A telephone and an iPod docking station are placed on top of them while a touch of colour comes from the contemporary print above the bed. Opposite, a leather writing desk is pretty much redundant as the flatscreen television takes up the lion's share of its surface. In the larger rooms an armchair is placed in the corner. These newer rooms have iron and ironing boards and safes although other amenities such as bath robes and minibars are still absent. The bathrooms are nicely fitted out with a mix of black-veined white marble and small black mirrored tiles. They feature either a walk-in shower or bathtub/shower combination, a standalone vanity, a large mirror, a hairdryer fixed to the wall and Gilchrist & Soames toiletries.

There are some rooms bigger than others, but the amenities remain the same and the views are of either West 50th Street or an internal courtyard (much quieter).

    Overview 6.20 /10

Perhaps nowhere else in the world are first impressions so important than they are in New York and ours at the Amsterdam Court were not good. Not only were the members of staff joking around upon our arrival but the lobby is a somewhat grim, brightened only by the smile of the jolly girl at reception. Either side of the space are two wingback chairs in which to rest your feet and pretty much no other features to the space apart from the console that separates them with its pair of lamps and the cubist image just above. The marble-topped reception desk is at the back of the hall with the hotel's sole elevator just by it.

There is not much more in terms of public spaces (aside from food and drink outlets) to speak about. There is a small business centre lounge at the hotel for which there is a steep charge where guests can also relax and catch up with some work at the desk.

The corridors are not only-inspiring either, being pretty dark and having stained carpets. That said, finding your room is not too difficult and luggage passes through easily.

    Food and drink 8.20 /10

The difference between the hotel's breakfast room and the Japanese restaurant that occupies the rented space next door is remarkable. The rather dingy and depressing downstairs space used to serve the morning continental breakfast (not included in the room rate) is a million miles from the large, bright and contemporary interiors of Natsumi. This latter is split into 2 distinct spaces with one side the restaurant proper and the other side a bar/lounge. Diners can choose to be seated at a regular table, at the sushi bar or at the bar and are surrounded by wooden lattices, slate, stone and a huge fireplace projected onto a blank canvas. The restaurant was set up by serial restaurateur Barbara Matsumura and the chef from one of her other ventures, Haru, Haru Konagaya, and offers a Japanese-Italian fusion cuisine as well as a decent drinks menu including wines, beers, cocktails and sake.

Natsumi does not, unfortunately, supply the hotel with room service although guests do have a 10% discount when dining in. If you do require room service, the hotel can provide this 24 hours per day but is supplied by a third party. You will find the menu in your room.

    To know

The Amsterdam Court is part of the Amsterdam Hospitality group of hotel s which has 8 properties in the States, 6 of which are in New York City. This particular hotel has 6 specially adapted rooms for those guests in a wheelchair. During our visit at the start of 2013 here were plans to renovate the older guestrooms - a wise decision.

Although no longer owned by Ian Schrager, his and Starck's influences are still felt throughout the hotel, even after a renovation which was completed in April 2009. Very much in the same vein as the Hudson and to a lesser extent the other Morgans hotel group properties, the Paramount mixes good facilities, the best of design and great food, drink and partying and all in an enviable location in Midtown Manhattan. Not a great option for families given the relatively tight rooms, but couples and friends would appreciate the design element and the bar and restaurant. The hotel is set to become even more of a hotspot once its nightclub opens early next year (2011).

If you are on your first visit to the city and looking for a funky hotel close to the New York that we are all familiar with from the movies then this is the place for you. Renovated in 2011, just a year or so prior to our visit, the Ameritania is a fun, young-at-heart property with reasonably large, well-appointed rooms, interesting public spaces and a restaurant on the way soon (more info as we get it in). But perhaps the biggest advantage of the hotel is its Midtown location. Close to so many of Manhattan's famous attractions, it is also well served by public transport and there is a host of restaurants and bars in several nearby neighbourhoods. There are several little touches that we especially liked here that help it to stand out which is why we would certainly recommend the Ameritania as a base for your New York trip, whether it be business or pleasure.

Our feelings about The Michelangelo can be summed up by telling you that within 30 seconds of entering the hotel we had come across four members of staff who impressed us! This is probably all you need to know, but for the sake of this review we'll continue! The hotel, a favourite for obvious reasons with Italian visitors to New York, is a fine, classically appointed property with a great Midtown location. It boasts spacious, perhaps slightly dated, but still comfortable and functional guestrooms, a decent lobby restaurant and an excellent staff. The big sell though of The Michelangelo is its style and ambiance which is pretty unique amongst New York hotels. A great place to stay whether you are travelling for business or pleasure, as a couple, family or group of friends.

The advantage of the Novotel is that you know exactly what you are going to get: it won't be anything gout of the ordinary but you are guaranteed a good standard of accommodation (although only one type) and service. The real asset of this hotel is its location and the views that come with it. Close to all the major attractions and with a decent restaurant and amenities this is the choice of those who don't want to break the bank but require a minimum of quality. Best for couples or small families as the rooms are not quite big enough for large groups.

We're going to stick our necks out here and say that of all the hotels we have stayed at in this city, the Setai probably takes top spot. Of course there are many different types of hotel in the city and not everyone is looking for what the Setai has to offer, but as on overall experience, it can't, in our opinion, be bettered. The rooms are not only some of the biggest in the city, but they are likely to be the best appointed in terms of amenities too. The stunning, contemporary spa is as luxurious as it is spacious and in its restaurant the hotel has one of most memorable dining experiences to be had. But what impressed us most, and where the hotel rises above it competitors, is the consistent attention to detail and impeccable service the likes of which we've never seen. Although new (November 2010 opening), this is right up there with the old masters and the best thing is that it can only get better!

Let's not mince our words; The Peninsula is quite simply one of the finest hotels in New York, even more so now it is the other side of a renovation. From the very first moment you enter the hotel you'll have no doubt about the quality of experience that awaits you. There is very little to pick holes at here where excellence comes as standard: the large rooms are finely furnished, the restaurants of the highest caliber, the spa one of the most beautiful and complete in the city and the service faultless. Like all top class hotels this all comes at a certain price, however if there was ever one hotel which could justify the cost it would be this one.

Be under no illusions, what Jacques Grange and co have conceived in the leafy surroundings of the Upper Eastside is now the yardstick against which all other hotels will now have to measure themselves. After over two years under renovation with some of the most sought after names in the creative fields working on the project, The Mark has transformed itself from a decent hotel to a hotel of superlatives. Everything is top draw from the design to the staff, from the food to the wellness centre. This all, of course, comes with the price tag that its quality demands, however rest assured that no other hotel can come close to what The Mark has to offer.

This mythical New York hotel has seen its fair share of changes, both within in its walls and outside, however one thing remains constant: The Carlyle is one of the swankiest, smartest, seductive hotels in the city. The very few flaws of the hotel (for example the size of some bathrooms) can be excused by its age; otherwise there are very few hotels of this genre which can claim to offer a similar experience. Not only does it offer top notch service and facilities, but its location and commanding views are also something spectacular. It is true to say that it may not have some of the facilities of some of the other top hotels (no spa, smaller rooms), but when it comes to service, style and sophistication, not to mention history, it is untouchable. With a location that would make most hotels weep with envy, fabulously appointed rooms with an Asian touch and a new, top quality restaurant, The Pierre is back on top of its game and ready to welcome once again all types of traveller, no matter their motive for visiting the city.
