Another one of those pleasant surprises, the Condor is a homely little number with some well-equipped, spacious rooms and a great team of staff. There's no getting away from the fact that its situation is not great if you are in town for sightseeing, however, Manhattan is accessible if you are not in a huge rush to move around. One of the few kosher hotels in the city, the Condor might not be the most stylish or trendy, but it does offer great value for money and an alternative to the clichéd Midtown properties.

    Location

The Condor is situated in the South Williamsburg district of Brooklyn, an area with a large religious Jewish population. It must be said that there is little of interest in the immediate vicinity of the hotel and the closest subway station (Flushing Avenue is on line G, meaning you have to change at Long Island City-Court Square to get to Manhattan) is a good 15 minute walk away. JFK is 17 miles away, La Guardia 9 miles and Newark 16.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The 35 rooms which make up the hotel's inventory are divided into several categories although the décor and amenities remain pretty constant, with just the size of the room changing. All rooms have a hardwood floor with a rug taking up much of the bedroom part of the accommodation. A king or queen bed is dressed in white linens as well as a brown throw and Condor cushions, which unnecessarily turn what is otherwise a pleasant room into something a bit corporate. In terms of the furniture you'll find a small table and chairs, a simple desk on which rests the flatscreen television and bedside tables complete with telephone and an MP3 clock radio. Other amenities include a safe while some of the larger guestrooms enjoy a balcony, although the view is not magnificent. Every room also has a fully-equipped kitchenette with coffee-maker, microwave and fridge. The spotless bathrooms all have tubs (some of which have jets) as well as hairdryers, personalised toiletries and large mirrors. The suites, of which there are two, have a larger living space with a dining table for six and a seating area with armchairs and couches (one of which is a sofabed). The larger of the two suites has a jacuzzi tub, while the smaller has a jet tub.

The hotel has two rooms adapted for those guests in wheelchairs.

    Overview 6.70 /10

The exterior of the hotel sticks out like a saw thumb as its neat, modern frontage contrasts sharply with next door's red brick construction. The lobby is small but cosy with a carpet up to the wave-fronted reception desk behind which is a lovely, helpful staff ready to check you in. Some flowers and scents have been added into the mix to liven things up, while just beyond the desk is a small seating area featuring silver Chesterfield armchairs. Through to the back of the hotel's ground floor is a comfortable communal living area with black leather sofas and armchairs arranged around a central coffee table. Here you'll also find a vending machine and a free-of-charge PC for surfing the net, although there is a complimentary wifi service for those who have a laptop. Out to the back of the salon is a cute little courtyard surrounded by plants where guests are free to sit when the weather is good enough and relax with a coffee or tea away from the hubbub of the big city.

The hotel is very easy to get around and finding your room is no trouble at all. For those who find the stairs too difficult or who have heavy luggage there is a lift serving all six floors of the property.

    Food and drink 5.70 /10

The hotel's breakfast room resembles more of a function room than anything else. It has no natural light and is a little dated. The kosher buffet offers a continental breakfast which is currently changing after some negative feedback. It features all the regular cereals, pastries, bread, yoghurts etc as well as teas, coffees and juices. The hotel does not offer a lunch or dinner service, however, there are restaurant in the area which will deliver to the hotel and whose menus you can find at reception.

    To know

The Condor started out life as a hotel aimed at religious Jewish tourists to the city as well as for the visiting friends and family of the neighbourhood's community. Today, however, the hotel is more mainstream and welcomes all types of traveller from all around the world. The Condor opened back in November of 2010 and the owners have plans for another boutique hotel in the city.

Perhaps the surprise package of our latest trip to New York, hotel le bleu offers generously-proportioned, well-appointed rooms close to downtown Brooklyn in a quiet, calm setting. It cannot boast an array of facilities like its neighbours in Manhattan, but its complimentary breakfast, wifi and parking and charming staff go some way to making up for this. If you're a couple looking to discover a different part of the city than the typical Manhattan circuit then this could be ideal for you.

Looking like the result of leaving a toddler alone for five minutes with an oversized brick version of Lego, The Bowery hotel eclipses all else on the street of the same name. However it is not solely in a physical sense that it reigns over all before it. With princely rooms, décor throughout fit for a king and stunning views over the realm, there is simply nothing like it elsewhere in New York. It has a trendy rather than strategic location, intimate atmosphere and excellent dining making it a perfect repair for couples. Highly recommended!

Looking rather out of sorts in the Lower East Side, this glass tower soars above its more traditionally constructed, six-storey, 19th century brick neighbours. If the outside is impressive then the inside will blow you away with some of the best people in the business having designed various parts of the hotel. The cleanest of lines, the sleekest of designs and the ingenious simplicity of it all make Hotel on Rivington one of the trendiest places to stay in New York, let alone the LES. It has large, light-filled rooms, an acclaimed restaurant and some stunning views. Unfortunately it falls short in exactly the same way as The Muse, with its staff. Geared more towards couples than families, although kids are most welcome.

Any hotel whose reception desk bears a jar of Smarties is an instant hit with us. There are two reasons for this: firstly it makes you smile which is absolutely the reaction guests should have when they wander into a hotel lobby; and secondly it shows that despite being a trendy property, The Nolitan doesn't take itself too seriously as so many of its competitors do. Slap bang in the middle of Downtown Manhattan, the hotel is perfectly placed for exploring this more human side of the city. The standard rooms may be on the small side but their design is flawless and they are well-appointed and have some stunning views. With a phenomenal rooftop terrace and an exciting new eatery on its way, The Nolitan is one of the hottest places to stay in New York right now.

The LES is another great little hotel from the Thompson group and follows the same successful formula of their other properties: understated, uncluttered unpretentious design, a laid back atmosphere projected in large part by the staff and good facilities including a beautiful Asian restaurant. Why change it if it ain't broke? Perhaps not as attractive as some of the other properties in the group from the point of view of location, there are nonetheless some points of interest close to the hotel, as well as some great views to be had, especially from the rooftop pool. If you're looking for an alternative perspective on the city but still value quality and innovative, raw design then, head for the LES.

Many a new hotel has opened in Downtown recently, trying to become the next 'place to be' and by all accounts, The Standard East Village has achieved that (for now). Perfectly located at the crux of the trendiest quarters of Manhattan, the hotel has pretty much everything that its yuppie target audience is looking for: generously, sleekly appointed rooms with a view, a laid back, innovative approach to service, a bar and restaurant everyone wants to get into and ideal spaces for informal business meetings. Some may find it superficial, others will be attracted by its shiny architecture and contemporary design, but what is sure is that it caters to its clientele as well as any hotel of its kind.

A welcome addition to the Williamsburg hotel scene, this new property, which was acquired by King and Grove no sooner had it opened, is very much a reflection of the fashionable neighbourhood in which it is found. A fresh, net and contemporary architecture is married with sleek, '60s Scandinavian style interiors, top notch fitness facilities and stunning views from its rooftop. This, together with the hotel's hip and friendly staff, make of the Williamsburg the new go to hotel in the area, particularly suitable for young couples and professionals whether they be in NYC for business or pleasure.

We were very much looking forward to visiting the then fledgling Aloft Brooklyn as our previous New York experience of the 'no-frills' version of W Hotels from Starwood in Harlem was a huge success. The ambitious brand, which is expanding globally at a rate of knots, aims to seduce those new media types in their late 20s and 30s who like to work had but also play hard. And this property is certainly a place where both ambitions can be achieved. Located in Downtown Brooklyn, it has some great amenities, funky, spacious and functional guestrooms, a great rooftop bar and the advantage of being able to share some amenities with the Sheraton (also Starwood) next door. Throw in a great staff, easy access to Manhattan and the rest of Brooklyn and a great vibe and the Aloft Brooklyn becomes the savvy choice for those young (at heart) travellers looking for an alternative to Manhattan or a true New York experience. Such a good product.

      Q. What do you get when you take $150 million and put them into the hands of one of the world's greatest architect/designers? A. The Mark. Be under no illusions, what Jacques Grange and co have conceived in the leafy surroundings of the Upper Eastside is now the yardstick against which all other hotels will now have to measure themselves. After over two years under renovation with some of the most sought after names in the creative fields working on the project, The Mark has transformed itself from a decent hotel to a hotel of superlatives. Everything is top draw from the design to the staff, from the food to the wellness centre. This all, of course, comes with the price tag that its quality demands, however rest assured that no other hotel can come close to what The Mark has to offer.

We're going to stick our necks out here and say that of all the hotels we have stayed at in this city, the Setai probably takes top spot. Of course there are many different types of hotel in the city and not everyone is looking for what the Setai has to offer, but as on overall experience, it can't, in our opinion, be bettered. The rooms are not only some of the biggest in the city, but they are likely to be the best appointed in terms of amenities too. The stunning, contemporary spa is as luxurious as it is spacious and in its restaurant the hotel has one of most memorable dining experiences to be had. But what impressed us most, and where the hotel rises above it competitors, is the consistent attention to detail and impeccable service the likes of which we've never seen. Although new (November 2010 opening), this is right up there with the old masters and the best thing is that it can only get better!

Let's not mince our words; The Peninsula is quite simply one of the finest hotels in New York, even more so now it is the other side of a renovation. From the very first moment you enter the hotel you'll have no doubt about the quality of experience that awaits you. There is very little to pick holes at here where excellence comes as standard: the large rooms are finely furnished, the restaurants of the highest caliber, the spa one of the most beautiful and complete in the city and the service faultless. Like all top class hotels this all comes at a certain price, however if there was ever one hotel which could justify the cost it would be this one.

This mythical New York hotel has seen its fair share of changes, both within in its walls and outside, however one thing remains constant: The Carlyle is one of the swankiest, smartest, seductive hotels in the city. The very few flaws of the hotel (for example the size of some bathrooms) can be excused by its age; otherwise there are very few hotels of this genre which can claim to offer a similar experience. Not only does it offer top notch service and facilities, but its location and commanding views are also something spectacular. It is true to say that it may not have some of the facilities of some of the other top hotels (no spa, smaller rooms), but when it comes to service, style and sophistication, not to mention history, it is untouchable. With a location that would make most hotels weep with envy, fabulously appointed rooms with an Asian touch and a new, top quality restaurant, The Pierre is back on top of its game and ready to welcome once again all types of traveller, no matter their motive for visiting the city.
