Hotel Giraffe is a pleasant mid-range hotel with pretty rooms, a lovely staff and a fine Italian restaurant. Its location slightly outside the main areas of heightened activity will suit those who are looking for a hotel in a slightly calmer district. Its cute little terrace and evening receptions accompanied by a pianist also make the hotel one of the most civilised. We would certainly recommend this hotel to both business and leisure travellers as well as to couples and families.

    Location 6.6 /10

Situated in a relatively calm area straddling the Flatiron District and Gramercy, the hotel is away from the hubbub of the heart of Midtown, yet well placed for discovering the tourist trail as well as Downtown. Within just a few minutes by foot guests can reach the famous Flatiron Building, Gramercy Park, the Empire State Building, Madison Square Gardens, Union Square and Macy's. Slightly further afield, yet still within walking distance, are Times Square, the Chrysler Building, New York Public Library and the theatres of Broadway. In terms of transportation, Penn Station is a couple of minutes away by foot and Grand Central would take about 15 to reach if walking. There are also several subway stations with the immediate vicinity of the hotel whose lines will get you up and down the island as well as to Brooklyn. JFK is 17 miles away, La Guardia 9 miles and Newark 15.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The hotel's 72 guestrooms are divided up into several categories of guestroom and suites. All are pretty much identical in terms of their decoration and all have views towards the exterior (so no courtyard views or views directly onto other buildings). Strangely for a giraffe-themed hotel, the overriding colour in the rooms is red! The queen or king beds have a red plaid and pillows whose covers feature a red border pattern, while both the armchair and flimsy, transparent curtains also bare the colour. The cabinetry in the room is made from a light coloured wood and looks a little dated, while the writing desk is topped with granite and has the nice touch of a plant on its surface. Amenities in the room are plentiful with a 40" flatscreen television, DVD player, iPod docking station, cordless telephone, safe, robes, iron and ironing board, minibar and snacks and complimentary bottled water. The walls have original 1920 black and white photography while if you are someone who needs complete darkness in order to sleep you'll be pleased to know that every room has blackout blinds. The bathrooms, all of which have bathtubs (aside from the four wheelchair-accessible rooms), have large granite-topped vanities with long mirrors and a make-up mirror, hairdryer and Natüra toiletries. Over half of the rooms have a Juliet balcony while the suites have a separate living space with similar style furniture to that in the room as well as a pull out sofa for one child, coffee table and flatscreen television.

Those who are very light sleepers should know that despite the double glazing, it is still possible to hear the faint noise of traffic on the street below.

    Overview 8.20 /10

If you were particularly imaginative you could see how the exterior of the building resembles a giraffe, with the colour of its bricks, the dark window frames and its height (although the buildings either side rise higher). It is more the interior and the hotel's lobby which nod towards the features of the animal in question with more appropriate tones present in the décor and upholstery as well as giraffe figurines behind the bar to the right-hand side (from behind which guests are invited to help themselves to juice and coffee around the clock). The best feature for us about the lobby is the heavy presence of flowers and plants: there brighten up the welcome desk, the large seating area which takes up the lion's share of the space and the bar. At the centre of the carpeted hall is a piano which is played every weekday night between 6pm and 9pm while guests can enjoy a complimentary wine and cheese reception (which also takes place on Saturdays). The floor to ceiling windows and the comfy furniture make the lobby a pleasant place to relax at any time of the day as well as a good location for informal meetings.

Aside from the rooftop terrace (see 'Food and Drink'), there is no other public space in the hotel. Moving around the hotel via the elevators and corridors is pretty simple and the rooms are easy to locate. The staff we found to be personable and helpful and the hotel in general has a good feel about it. There is complimentary wifi throughout the property.

    Food and drink 8.20 /10

Guests are treated to a complimentary continental breakfast taken in the hotel's lobby and which includes fruits, cereal, patisseries, bagels, eggs and other snacks as well as juice and tea and coffee. For other meals, you could choose to head to the hotel's restaurant, Bread & Tulips, where guests at the Giraffe are offered a 20% discount on their bill. Located in the basement of the hotel, this Italian eatery serves traditional classics using local, seasonal ingredients. Among the specialities of the restaurant are crostini, meatballs, hand-made pastas and pizzas baked in their pizza oven imported from Modena. The wine list is pretty extensive featuring mainly Italian wines but also some from other old and new world producers while there is also a beer and cocktail list if you just fancy a drink. The space itself has a mix of textures with hardwood flooring, brick walls and a stone-topped bar on which guests can eat too. If you prefer, however, the confines of your own room, then lunch can be brought to you from Monday to Friday midday until 3pm, while an in-room dinner is available Monday to Saturday from 5pm until 10pm.

During the summer months or when the weather permits, a bar service is available on the hotel's rooftop terrace. Intimate and with no particular view, it is nonetheless a pleasure to come up here amongst the fairy light-laden plants, giraffe stature and huge leaning mirror and take a drink with the other surrounding buildings looming overhead.

    To know

Hotel Giraffe is part of a four-hotel collection whose other properties in New York include the Library Hotel, the Casablanca and the Elysée. The name is simply that of the owner's favourite animal.

More of a community than a hotel, The Gershwin is a one-of-a-kind property in the Flatiron District of Manhattan. An art lover's paradise, this is the most creative hotel in the city with art at its very core. It welcomes an artist-in-residence twice a year, has regular exhibitions and shows and has its own collection to boot, displayed throughout the hotel. Almost secondary is the actual accommodation, which is basic yet retro and fun and surprisingly well-appointed. It has a quirky coffee shop-come-library, a young, vibrant staff and a relatively central location which makes it the ideal place to stay for alternative, arty travellers looking to both see the city but also to dip their foot in the waters of New York's art scene.

Owner Alex Calderwood said he wasn't interested in being trendy, he just wanted to create an instant classic. Well, he has achieved both, whether he likes it or not. One of the most original, innovative and inspired hotels you'll see anywhere, let alone in New York, the Ace is a masterpiece from top to bottom that will attract backpackers, groups of friends and couples alike. Every aspect, and we mean every aspect, has been meticulously mulled over from the name of the hotel itself (see 'To Know' section) to the iron board covers' wording. Effortlessness and a carefree attitude seem to be the dominating characteristics of the hotel as can be witnessed from the borderline too-cool-for-school porters and the auto flush loos in the public WC. Indeed, as the caption on the stairs leading back to the lobby from the aforementioned services reassures, "Everything is going to be alright."

"This is a one-of-a-kind thing. It's a complete left turn for me and different than anything we have ever done before, and I expect it will wind up being a prototype for the hotel industry the same way my first hotel was 25 years ago." This is how Ian Schrager, the genius behind the project, sums up Gramercy Park Hotel (GPH) and who are we to argue. It is arguably the most complete hotel we saw: jaw-dropping design, highly sought-after artwork, the hippest of staff, a rich history and home to one of the most exclusive bar scenes in the city. Add to this the top quality amenities, an eatery from an acclaimed restauranteur and access to the only private park in New York and you have a Boho hotel which is quite simply in a class of its own. You won't be stunned to hear that this sort of experience doesn't come cheap, but if you are looking for an unforgettable stay in the city, why spend your cash elsewhere.

The MAve is a basic yet fun hotel with a decent central location in the Flatiron District of Manhattan. The rooms are on the small side, but are nicely appointed with good amenities although the hotel as a whole lacks the services of some of its competitors and of the larger hotels. More of a tourist hotel than one for business, The MAve offers reasonable value for money, especially if you book in advance or take up on one of their offers. Just don't expect a full-service experience with lots of surprises and unique touches.

A funky little property perfect for young (at heart) couples looking for a quiet base from which to explore the city, The Marcel at Gramercy marries style with functionality in its 136 guestrooms. Although slightly off the well beaten tourist path, it is easy to reach the city's main attractions if this is what you are after but just as easy to discover neighbourhoods that you may not know well. The clean-lined, contemporary décor will appeal to design fans although the breakfast and wifi prices may put others off. The tall-ceilinged rooms are a little small in some cases, but many have excellent light and great city views. Those who like to party at the weekend will only have to walk downstairs to the hotel's bar to enjoy a night out while there are plenty of other entertainment venues close by.

Generously proportioned, impressively appointed rooms are complemented by a relaxed yet top class Italian restaurant, while the spa is a sight to behold. Q. What do you get when you take $150 million and put them into the hands of one of the world's greatest architect/designers? A. The Mark. Be under no illusions, what Jacques Grange and co have conceived in the leafy surroundings of the Upper Eastside is now the yardstick against which all other hotels will now have to measure themselves. After over two years under renovation with some of the most sought after names in the creative fields working on the project, The Mark has transformed itself from a decent hotel to a hotel of superlatives. Everything is top draw from the design to the staff, from the food to the wellness centre. This all, of course, comes with the price tag that its quality demands, however rest assured that no other hotel can come close to what The Mark has to offer.

We're going to stick our necks out here and say that of all the hotels we have stayed at in this city, the Setai probably takes top spot. Of course there are many different types of hotel in the city and not everyone is looking for what the Setai has to offer, but as on overall experience, it can't, in our opinion, be bettered. The rooms are not only some of the biggest in the city, but they are likely to be the best appointed in terms of amenities too. The stunning, contemporary spa is as luxurious as it is spacious and in its restaurant the hotel has one of most memorable dining experiences to be had. But what impressed us most, and where the hotel rises above it competitors, is the consistent attention to detail and impeccable service the likes of which we've never seen. Although new (November 2010 opening), this is right up there with the old masters and the best thing is that it can only get better!

Let's not mince our words; The Peninsula is quite simply one of the finest hotels in New York, even more so now it is the other side of a renovation. From the very first moment you enter the hotel you'll have no doubt about the quality of experience that awaits you. There is very little to pick holes at here where excellence comes as standard: the large rooms are finely furnished, the restaurants of the highest caliber, the spa one of the most beautiful and complete in the city and the service faultless. Like all top class hotels this all comes at a certain price, however if there was ever one hotel which could justify the cost it would be this one.

The very few flaws of the hotel (for example the size of some bathrooms) can be excused by its age; otherwise there are very few hotels of this genre which can claim to offer a similar experience. Not only does it offer top notch service and facilities, but its location and commanding views are also something spectacular. It is true to say that it may not have some of the facilities of some of the other top hotels (no spa, smaller rooms), but when it comes to service, style and sophistication, not to mention history, it is untouchable. With a location that would make most hotels weep with envy, fabulously appointed rooms with an Asian touch and a new, top quality restaurant, The Pierre is back on top of its game and ready to welcome once again all types of traveller, no matter their motive for visiting the city.
