The Omni Berkshire Place is very smart 1930s-style hotel with some very sleek contemporary touches right in the heart of Manhattan. It would be misleading to say that it has one particular feature that sets it aside from its competitors, but it does what it does extremely well, maintaining a high level of service and comfort throughout. It boasts well-appointed, spacious guestrooms and suites with good amenities, a very pleasant rooftop terrace with views of St. Patrick's Cathedral and a full service restaurant which serves decent fare if you do not want to head out for a meal. Able to meet the expectations of both the business and leisure traveller, one could do a lot worse in this part of town.

A dependable mid-range hotel with spacious accommodations and a rooftop terrace with pleasant views.

    Location 8.41 /10

Situated on East 52nd Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues, the hotel has a great central Manhattan location right in amongst some of the most famous shopping in the city. Central Park, Grand Central, the Rockefeller Center, Broadway, the UN, Times Square and New York Public Library are all within a 15-minute walk of the hotel and there are a couple of subway stations in close proximity too to get you around the island. JFK is 16 miles away, La Guardia 9 miles and Newark 16.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The Omni has just under 300 guestrooms and suites, all of whose décor remains pretty consistent throughout. With a similar palette to the lobby, yellows, browns and greys dominate and there are some art nouveau touches in the form of the lamps and headboards for example. The standard rooms (known as deluxe at The Omni) are fairly generous in their square meterage and feature one or two queen beds dressed in custom linens which make a break from the traditional white. The sturdy bedside tables feature elegant reading lamps as well as a phone and a clock radio. There is enough space in the corner for an armchair and occasional table while the space also permits a long writing desk. Inside the sycamore closet you will find a minibar and snack tray, a safe, an iron and ironing board and an umbrella. Most of the deluxe rooms give onto the interior courtyard which is perfect if you are a light sleeper as they are extremely quiet. The Italian marble bathrooms have several different colours of tile which looks a bit odd however they are in excellent condition and there is space to move around. There are mirrors on two walls in addition to a make-up mirror while there is also a good range of personalised toiletries and amenities presented on silver trays. Most of the rooms have a deep soaking tub with shower and curved curtain rail. You will also find bathrobes and a hairdryer in the bathroom.

There are of course larger guestrooms at the hotel such as the premier or executive rooms which not only have more spacious living quarters but also views Madison Avenue or 52nd Street and extra amenities including an iPod docking station. The suites are separated into sleeping and living areas and have pull out sofas for extra guests with the larger ones also having separate bathtub and shower. The largest suite, the Rodgers and Hammerstein, boasts a wraparound terrace and powder room within its 90-odd m².

    Overview 7.70 /10

With one of those traditional New York bronze-coloured canopies over the front entrance of the Omni, one already gets an impression of what is to come inside. The lobby is rather grand, despite its low ceiling, thanks in no small part to the period chandeliers, the impressive central flower arrangement and the custom rugs which partially cover the all white marble floors. The reception desk can be found on the right-hand side where you will be greeted warmly by the professional members of staff while toward the back of the hall is some seating space, rather cosy with sofas and armchairs and some contemporary canvases on the walls. More greenery is a welcome addition to the setting, as is the lamps, vases and carriage clock. The colour tones, while quite sober overall, do involve some bursts of colour whilst remaining smart. What is less classy is the ATM machine installed in the lobby which reminds of hotels in a far lower class than the Omni.

In terms of other public spaces and facilities, the hotel has a good quality fitness room with all types of machine (some have their own screen) as well as towels, water and fresh fruit. For those who prefer to relax, head up to the terrace from where you get a great view of St. Patrick's Cathedral and of the surrounding sky scrapers looming down on the space. Guests are free to bring their bar drinks up here and can also order room service to the terrace if the weather permits.

Four elevators serve all 20 floors of the hotel and finding your room is an uncomplicated and swift process. The corridors are wide, light and clean and room numbers are well indicated.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

Fireside is the Omni's restaurant and bar located just off the lobby on the ground floor of the property. At the centre of the space stands the square bar with its engraved glass container for bottles suspended from the ceiling. The counter of the bar is also used in the mornings for the breakfast buffet, although you can also order à la carte dishes such as eggs and the works ,pancakes, waffles etc. The rest of the space is rather warm with columns looking like piled books, red Chesterfield couches and huge candles round the edge of the room. There is a mix of seating styles at the square and round tables for two while on the ceiling is a huge rectangular light fixture. Funk music plays in the background at a bearable level.

There is no lunch or dinner menu as such, but rather an all-day menu which offers a decent choice of dishes including sharing platters, salads, sandwiches, pizzas and a number of sides. The ingredients are not of the highest quality nor are they perhaps the freshest, however the food is reasonable and no more or less expensive than a similar Midtown eatery. A late night menu is also available but which is limited and there is another for kids. An express four-course menu, priced at $28, is another option during the weekday lunchtimes.

We had high expectations before staying at Chambers and those were translated into fond memories by the time we left. Aside from the fact that it doesn't have on-site fitness or wellness facilities, this is the perfect city hotel. The rooms are spacious and uber-stylish, its Midtown location is difficult to beat and it boasts two food outlets from celebrity chef David Chang. It also has an impressive art collection which is displayed both in the property's public spaces and in the guestrooms and which comprises over 500 pieces. All the above married with some unique touches, friendly service and an inspired décor make Chambers one of our favourite Midtown bolt holes for both couples and families on leisure.

Although coming up to its eleventh anniversary as The Benjamin, this 1927 building now has an interior to match its Art Deco origins. During this past decade no renovation has been undertaken and it is true to say that this is starting to show. However this does not take away from the quality of the product or from the service which remains top notch. Just like the other properties in the Denihan Hospitality Group (notably the Affinias), the rooms are spacious and the hotel is ideal if you're looking for a traditional, more classic style of base from which to uncover the city. Recommended for tourists (couples, friends or families) and for business travellers wanting a comfortable space in which to work.

The name says it all. If any hotel in New York has the right to stick the word 'palace' to the end if its name, it's this one. As soon as you walk in the door you sense you're in for something special. The rooms are some of the plushest we saw, the views are incredible, it has a Michelin-starred restaurant and a top quality spa and fitness centre, not to mention a fascinating history. We'd recommend highly this fabulously located, lavish property for all types of traveller, no matter what their motive for travel. And if you don't believe us, ask anyone who has stayed; we didn't hear a bad word!

Step back in time to the golden age of Hollywood at the Warwick and experience what some of the biggest names in show business did back in the 30s, 40s and 50s. As well as a rich history, the hotel has beautifully appointed rooms, a renowned bar and a dream location at the heart of all the main attractions. This is a place where service takes priority (as in all of Warwick's properties) and comfort is assured. Don't expect modern design and a trendy, artsy staff-that's not what the Warwick does. If you are a couple or a small family looking for old fashioned hospitality and calm then we'd recommend the Warwick without hesitation. One of the most distinguished hotels in New York.

Pretty much a carbon copy of its sister hotel the World Center Hotel (WCH) in Downtown Manhattan, The Jewel has perhaps a better location for those visiting New York for the very first time or for those whose interests lie closer to the centre of the city. Like the WCH, it is very business-orientated, although it is also suitable for leisure travellers, including families. The rooms are a decent size for this part of town and are well appointed while the staff is excellent and the views from the hotel's Terrace Club are pretty impressive. While it would be unfair to describe the décor as ugly, this is definitely a hotel where function comes before design. If you're looking for location and service, The Jewel is a good option.

Let's not mince our words; The Peninsula is quite simply one of the finest hotels in New York, even more so now it is the other side of a renovation. From the very first moment you enter the hotel you'll have no doubt about the quality of experience that awaits you. There is very little to pick holes at here where excellence comes as standard: the large rooms are finely furnished, the restaurants of the highest caliber, the spa one of the most beautiful and complete in the city and the service faultless. Like all top class hotels this all comes at a certain price, however if there was ever one hotel which could justify the cost it would be this one.

You may be coming to the United States to see New York, but the St. Regis is a destination in itself. The most sumptuous hotel we have visited to date in the city, its beautiful Beaux-Arts interiors are a sight to behold. It's (rightly) famed for its unrivalled service and King Cole Bar (more in 'Food and Drink') as well as its beautiful, spacious and well appointed rooms, however it does lack some of the high tier amenities of its rivals, such as a swimming pool, and the views are not quite as good. That said it can boast an Alain Ducasse restaurant and original antique décor. It's true to say that some may find the hotel's opulence a little overbearing, but let's not lose sight of the fact that this is nonetheless a true masterpiece. Even if you don't have the means to stay here, come and take a look around as the property has some unique features. Couples, friends or business travellers will all find their calling at the St. Regis.

      Q. What do you get when you take $150 million and put them into the hands of one of the world's greatest architect/designers? A. The Mark. Be under no illusions, what Jacques Grange and co have conceived in the leafy surroundings of the Upper Eastside is now the yardstick against which all other hotels will now have to measure themselves. After over two years under renovation with some of the most sought after names in the creative fields working on the project, The Mark has transformed itself from a decent hotel to a hotel of superlatives. Everything is top draw from the design to the staff, from the food to the wellness centre. This all, of course, comes with the price tag that its quality demands, however rest assured that no other hotel can come close to what The Mark has to offer.

We're going to stick our necks out here and say that of all the hotels we have stayed at in this city, the Setai probably takes top spot. Of course there are many different types of hotel in the city and not everyone is looking for what the Setai has to offer, but as on overall experience, it can't, in our opinion, be bettered. The rooms are not only some of the biggest in the city, but they are likely to be the best appointed in terms of amenities too. The stunning, contemporary spa is as luxurious as it is spacious and in its restaurant the hotel has one of most memorable dining experiences to be had. But what impressed us most, and where the hotel rises above it competitors, is the consistent attention to detail and impeccable service the likes of which we've never seen. Although new (November 2010 opening), this is right up there with the old masters and the best thing is that it can only get better!

It is true to say that it may not have some of the facilities of some of the other top hotels (no spa, smaller rooms), but when it comes to service, style and sophistication, not to mention history, it is untouchable. With a location that would make most hotels weep with envy, fabulously appointed rooms with an Asian touch and a new, top quality restaurant, The Pierre is back on top of its game and ready to welcome once again all types of traveller, no matter their motive for visiting the city.
