Don't be fooled by the name of the hotel, the Skyline only has 4 floors and does not offer, as the name might lead you to believe, a great view of the New york river front. You will nevertheless find adequate accommodation, a pleasant environment and warm hospitality.

    Location 6.19 /10

At 725 - 10th Avenue, at the corner of 49th street. In the area of Midtown West, three blocks away from Broadway and one block away from the " Sea-Air-Space Museum." The hotel is 15.5 miles away from La Guardia airport, 15 miles away from JFK, and 15.5 miles away from Newark. It is located near the subway stations C, E, 1 & 9.

    Accommodation 7.45 /10

Large, about 35 m², the rooms of the Skyline offer a neutral environment without originality: green carpet, pink walls, common furniture. The state of the rooms and the level of cleanliness are impeccable, and the amenities very adequate: cable television (17 channels, one free movie channel, Nintendo and Internet), safe and telephone. The bathrooms are also large and have bathtubs, but average decoration and few products.

    Overview 7.45 /10

Renovated in 2000, the Skyline houses 230 rooms in a series of four-floor buildings built in the 60's. It is located on 10th Avenue, a street lacking charm, with a lot of traffic. Its decoration and configuration evoke, more or less, a motel environment, but with comfort and amenities of much better quality. The Skyline has a pleasant bar, an Italian restaurant, a swimming pool, a shop, and a porter service (excursion, location, theater tickets, outings.) It is clean and relatively well-located, but its surroundings lack charm and especially quietness.

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

The restaurant overlooking 10th Street is very friendly and has a pretty decoration. It is divided in two parts, with an American pub in the front. It is open from 6:30 to midnight, and serves, among other things, a choice of pastas and pizzas.

    To know

The hotel has a cash machine on the ground floor. It has a pretty, covered swimming pool, but it is often made available to neighbouring schools during the day, unfortunately. Prefer rooms that do not overlook 10th Avenue.

Although no longer owned by Ian Schrager, his and Starck's influences are still felt throughout the hotel, even after a renovation which was completed in April 2009. Very much in the same vein as the Hudson and to a lesser extent the other Morgans hotel group properties, the Paramount mixes good facilities, the best of design and great food, drink and partying and all in an enviable location in Midtown Manhattan. Not a great option for families given the relatively tight rooms, but couples and friends would appreciate the design element and the bar and restaurant. The hotel is set to become even more of a hotspot once its nightclub opens early next year (2011).

Although it has a great central location and other pulls such as a rooftop bar and busy restaurant, the bits that most people are really interested in, the accommodation and service, fall short. Some of the rooms, are incredibly small and desperately needed updating (during our visit in February 2013), it seems as if the personnel have better things to do with their time and parts of the property are poorly maintained. There are no particularly good views to be had from the rooms and some are not very well appointed although the newly renovated guestrooms we saw were a huge improvement. The Amsterdam Court might be one of the cheaper hotels in New York but in our opinion there are better deals to be had elsewhere for couples and families looking for a central location.

The hotel 414 is one of those rare creatures of Manhattan: a decent hotel, with clean, quiet and spacious rooms at a very affordable price. The quaint property has some features which you definitely wouldn't find at larger hotels in the city and despite not being right in the mix of things you are never too far away from where the action is. It may not have the impressive design or grandeur of the big boys but it definitely has charm and is ideal for couples or small families on a budget whether visiting NYC for the first or tenth time.

There is a five foot installation on the hotel's fourth floor lobby of an imaginary species of antelope wearing huge red glasses and with his teeth showing through his lit up face. At once fun, great to look at, unique, welcoming and above all smile-inducing, this horned caricature is the embodiment of the Yotel. Marrying happy, contemporary design with function and innovation, the hotel is one of the most enjoyable places to stay in the city. It might be slightly off the regular tourist radar, but its other services and features more than make up for this: well appointed, practical rooms, a buzzing public space (both indoor and out), a trendy Japanese restaurant and some truly unique aspects that enhance the guest experience. Their spacecraft theme/jargon gets a bit tedious after a while, but this takes nothing away from the spectacle that is the Yotel, whether you are travelling as an individual, couple, group of friends or family.

Finally, a hotel that has genuinely come up with a new concept rather than rehashing a pre-existing one and repackaging it hoping that it will pass as innovation! Not only is The Out NYC the first openly homosexual, or rather, hetero-friendly hotel in New York City, but it is also the premier urban resort in the city. This truly unique space marries sleek, spacious guestrooms with highly original, multi-purpose indoor and outdoor communal spaces and eating and drinking spots where people want to be seen. As if its exciting Hell's Kitchen location was not enough to get people flocking in, it also puts on a host of guest activities that you will find in no other property in the city, perhaps the world. Without a doubt one of the most fun hotels in New York, and it is for everyone, not just those of a homosexual persuasion. The Out NYC is, however, an over-21 only hotel.

      Q. What do you get when you take $150 million and put them into the hands of one of the world's greatest architect/designers? A. The Mark. Be under no illusions, what Jacques Grange and co have conceived in the leafy surroundings of the Upper Eastside is now the yardstick against which all other hotels will now have to measure themselves. After over two years under renovation with some of the most sought after names in the creative fields working on the project, The Mark has transformed itself from a decent hotel to a hotel of superlatives. Everything is top draw from the design to the staff, from the food to the wellness centre. This all, of course, comes with the price tag that its quality demands, however rest assured that no other hotel can come close to what The Mark has to offer.

We're going to stick our necks out here and say that of all the hotels we have stayed at in this city, the Setai probably takes top spot. Of course there are many different types of hotel in the city and not everyone is looking for what the Setai has to offer, but as on overall experience, it can't, in our opinion, be bettered. The rooms are not only some of the biggest in the city, but they are likely to be the best appointed in terms of amenities too. The stunning, contemporary spa is as luxurious as it is spacious and in its restaurant the hotel has one of most memorable dining experiences to be had. But what impressed us most, and where the hotel rises above it competitors, is the consistent attention to detail and impeccable service the likes of which we've never seen. Although new (November 2010 opening), this is right up there with the old masters and the best thing is that it can only get better!

Let's not mince our words; The Peninsula is quite simply one of the finest hotels in New York, even more so now it is the other side of a renovation. From the very first moment you enter the hotel you'll have no doubt about the quality of experience that awaits you. There is very little to pick holes at here where excellence comes as standard: the large rooms are finely furnished, the restaurants of the highest caliber, the spa one of the most beautiful and complete in the city and the service faultless. Like all top class hotels this all comes at a certain price, however if there was ever one hotel which could justify the cost it would be this one.

Generously proportioned, impressively appointed rooms are complemented by a relaxed yet top class Italian restaurant, while the spa is a sight to behold. You'll have a tough job finding a property where the service is paralleled and don't even get us started on the views! Take a step back in time (through a passage lined with suede and leather, of course) to the golden age of travel and the magnificent new Art Deco hotel The Chatwal. Opened recently in August of 2011, it has quickly become one of the places to stay in New York and to be honest, it isn't difficult to see why: a dream location in the heart of Manhattan, superbly appointed, world ?class accommodations, a luxury spa and a fine restaurant. Marrying both old world glamour and modern day luxury, this 'baby grand' hotel will appeal to those looking for good old fashioned service in a romantic setting with everything that makes this a great city within reach.

This mythical New York hotel has seen its fair share of changes, both within in its walls and outside, however one thing remains constant: The Carlyle is one of the swankiest, smartest, seductive hotels in the city. The very few flaws of the hotel (for example the size of some bathrooms) can be excused by its age; otherwise there are very few hotels of this genre which can claim to offer a similar experience. Not only does it offer top notch service and facilities, but its location and commanding views are also something spectacular. Throw in a rich history, fine dining and exquisite décor and you get a hotel (literally) fit for kings. If you've got the cash, don't even ask yourself the question?

The Pierre has always been a landmark hotel in New York City?and we are glad to report that after its latest $100 million renovation following its takeover by Taj Hotels, it is still very much one of the hotels by which others must judge themselves. It is true to say that it may not have some of the facilities of some of the other top hotels (no spa, smaller rooms), but when it comes to service, style and sophistication, not to mention history, it is untouchable. With a location that would make most hotels weep with envy, fabulously appointed rooms with an Asian touch and a new, top quality restaurant, The Pierre is back on top of its game and ready to welcome once again all types of traveller, no matter their motive for visiting the city. All this comes, of course, at a price, but if you had to choose a place to spend your hard earned cash, this has got to be near the summit of your shortlist.

Although no longer associated with its Parisian namesake, the Plaza Athénée New York continues to offer one of the most refined hotel experiences in the city. Its style may not be as subtle as some of its competitors and thus some many find it a little overwhelming, but there is no getting away from the fact the hotel is a class act from top to bottom. It boasts capacious, well-appointed and recently renovated rooms (January 2010), a fine wellness centre, a celebrated restaurant and bar and an impeccable service from a smart, professional staff. If you're after that classic European opulence the other side of the Atlantic then the well-located Plaza Athénée is one to consider.
