You will notice right from the off that here at The Marcel at Gramercy they like clean lines and uniformity. The entrance features a sleek canopy at the door, striped awnings above the ground floor windows (below which are evenly spaced out trimmed bushes) and symmetrically placed windows right the way up to the top of the building. The theme continues indoors with a couple of elevators opposite the entrance door and then to the right, two armchairs very precisely placed on a shag rug in front of an electric fireplace. Further on to the right is a long silver-coloured couch with a cushion at each end flanked by identical chrome blocks with flowers on. In front are a couple of cube-shaped tables each with a flower and above is a graphically-designed, slightly psychedelic triptych. Then further yet to the right is the reception area where, in a blatant disregard for the rest of the hotel's straight lines, sits an almost full circle shiny black sofa upon a round shag rug with four round stumps in the middle each with its own flower. But have no fear as the marble reception desk is a reassuringly rectangular block decorated with orchids and an old fashioned telephone.
At the top of the hotel is a large guest lounge, which also doubles as a business centre and breakfast room. A continental breakfast is served here every morning (priced at $14.10) and there is complimentary tea and coffee available all day. Half the room is set up with tables and chairs for breakfast while the other half is a cosier seating area with couches and armchairs. Outside is a pleasant little terrace where guests are free to relax and bring up their drinks from the bar. Although only 11 stories high, the view of the surrounding buildings is still quite impressive as they are not on top of you.
The rest of the hotel is in excellent repair and is clean and tidy and calm. The one complaint we do have is that room locations are poorly indicated on each floor so one is never sure which way to turn to find the right room. As we mentioned before, although the staff we came across was very friendly and helpful, there are not many members of the team at the hotel at one time which could turn out to be a problem if in demand.
