The French pearl of the Caribbean

Guadeloupe in short

The French archipelago of Guadeloupe is made up of 6 inhabited islands: Grande-Terre, Basse-Terre, Marie-Galante, La Désirade and the islands of Les Saintes (Terre de Haut and Terre de Bas). Five unique places to discover, each with its own special characteristics. Because even if the coconut palms are always there, the atmosphere and landscapes are very different from one island to the next... It would be simplistic to reduce Guadeloupe to its beaches. A living land where nature expresses itself without restraint, it has thousands of things to see and experience in every season. Known as the "butterfly island", it is divided into two main areas: Basse-Terre and Grande Terre.

Basse-Terre is located in the west of Guadeloupe. With its fine sandy beaches and lush vegetation, the island lives to the rhythm of the local volcano and is particularly wild, attracting hiking enthusiasts. Most of the island is occupied by nature, which has reclaimed its rights around the La Soufrière volcano. Reaching an altitude of 1,467 metres, it is surrounded by a protected area: the Guadeloupe National Park, with its many hiking trails, endemic plant species and hot springs.

Grande-Terre, in the east of Guadeloupe, is home to seaside resorts and hotels on the beautiful beaches of Sainte Anne, Gosier and Saint François. This is where most of the holiday hotels are concentrated, with a particularly large number in Gosier, the closest resort to Pointe-à-Pitre airport (around 15 minutes by car). Nature lovers can also turn to the Caribbean Sea, which has an exceptional underwater world. Water sports are also popular, with outstanding spots for windsurfers and surfers!

Less touristy but just as exceptional, the other three islands of Guadeloupe have nothing to envy their neighbours. While Désirade is a desert islet with an air of Brittany, Les Saintes is slowly but surely catching on, becoming one of the top destinations for holidays. Les Saintes comprises two main islands - Terre de Haut and Terre de Bas - and numerous deserted islets.

Finally, Marie Galante - the 3rd largest island in the French West Indies - is also gradually opening up to tourism. Its main sources of income are fishing and sugar cane production. Contrary to popular belief, Marie-Galante is not just a place where you come to extend your holiday in Guadeloupe; it is a real place to stay in its own right. It's a peaceful, unspoilt island that invites travellers to sit back and relax. It offers a glimpse of what Guadeloupe was like 30 years ago, and is a delightful place to sunbathe for a week or so. Enjoy water sports, visit distilleries and mills, relax on heavenly beaches and, above all, discover natural sites of dazzling beauty. While it may seem an exaggeration to talk about towns in Marie-Galante, two large villages are well worth a visit: Grand-Bourg, with its picturesque, colourful wooden houses, and Capesterre, with its dream beaches.

As you can see, there are countless possibilities for trips to Guadeloupe's numerous islands, whether you're travelling as a family, a couple or on your own.

Where to stay?

The islands of Guadeloupe have three major seaside resorts: Sainte-Anne, Le Gosier and Saint-François, lined up along the light sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast, to the south of Grande-Terre. There are also a few resorts scattered around Basse-Terre, close to the grey and black sand beaches, and on the other islands of the archipelago.

Practical information

Documents and visas :

As with any foreign countries, UK nationals need their passport to enter Guadeloupe, as they would France. Find out more about this on the official UK government website.

Language :

Although French is the official language, Creole is ubiquitous and remains widely used. You'll be delighted to recognise and use the most common Creole expressions.

Money:

The currency used in Guadeloupe is the Euro €. There are no bank charges for credit card payments. Numerous cash dispensers are also available in the main towns, with no withdrawal fees.

Although bank cards are accepted in most shops, many restaurants do not have payment machines, particularly in the less touristy areas. It is therefore advisable to carry a reasonable amount of cash in your wallet at all times. Cheques issued by people who do not have their own bank branch on the island are not accepted.

It should also be noted that some establishments are happy to accept luncheon vouchers and holiday vouchers.

Best time of year:

Guadeloupe enjoys a temperate tropical climate, with two seasons: the wet season (July to December) and the dry season (January to June), which is generally favoured by tourists. Guadeloupe's weather forecast offers its inhabitants and numerous tourists a warm (with an annual average of 27°C), stable and humid climate.

Temperatures do, however, peak during the hottest months, in August and September: a popular period for sun-seekers, but dreaded by hikers, who prefer to explore Guadeloupe around April.

Time difference :

The islands of Guadeloupe have a large time difference with the UK. In winter, the archipelago is 5 hours behind the UK: when it's 8pm in London, it's 3pm in Pointe-à-Pitre. In summer, this time difference increases to 6 hours, since Guadeloupe is not affected by the time change.

Transport:

In Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre, a bus network connects certain communes from 5am to 6pm. However, bus times are irregular, and many locals still prefer to carpool or hitchhike for their daily commute. It is therefore strongly recommended that you hire a car to get around easily.

In Pointe-à-Pitre, car traffic is anarchic and parking is rare. However, in the rest of the archipelago, the road network (without tolls) is dense and well-maintained, providing easy access to the main tourist sites.

To get from one island to another, and in particular to Marie-Galante, Les Saintes or La Désirade, the boat is the most popular option. There are several round trips a day between the main ports of the archipelago.

Health :

No vaccinations are required to visit Guadeloupe. However, a yellow fever vaccination may be required if you are returning from a country where this disease may be present. The emergency number is 112.
