a neighbour of the Atlante Star hotel and owned by the same hotel group, the Atlante Garden is best visited between April and October: when its roof terrace is set up, for having a drink and appreciating the view (of Saint Peter's basilica on one side and Rome on the other). The rest of the year, the Atlante Garden is more of a city hotel: with rooms (recently renovated, thank goodness!), breakfast room, bar area and reception lounge. That's it?

    Location 6.74 /10

On the Via Crescenzio, 500 ft from Saint Peter's square. The closest metro station is Ottaviano, a 7-minute walk away.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

The hotel is around 40 years old, but the 55 rooms (including 8 for 4 people) were renovated in 2007: therefore all of them have comfortable bedding, and each bathroom has been fitted with a hydro massaging bath. The surface area increases between the double room and the family room, however, none of the rooms are particularly spacious. Choose the delux category to feel comfortable as a couple, which provides approximately 215 sq ft. As for the view, the rooms look over one of the neighbourhood's streets (beware of traffic noise) or a backyard with Mediterranean facades (walls painted orange with green shutters). The decor varies from one category of room to the next, but they all have shared details (panelling or fabrics on the walls, carpeted floor, curtains and coordinating bed covers). Often, a large mirror above the bed gives the impression of space. The rest of the facilities include a television, telephone, mini-bar and air conditioning. There is a hair dryer and welcome products (50 ml) in the bathroom.

    Overview 7.20 /10

A 5-storey building, the Atlante Garden is a traditional city hotel, whose rooms have preserved their traditional-style layout. The reception is therefore separate from the lounges. At the moment, these are equipped with rather worn out furniture (you sink very low into the base of the sofas, covered in damask fabric), but have a warm, classical style (framed paintings on the walls, traditional furniture, and gold wrought iron wall lights). That's it for the common areas, which are accessible all year round. Between April and November, some tables are arranged on the roof, which is set up as a terrace: just for having drinks, and for appreciating the view over Saint Peter's basilica on one side, and the city of Rome on the other. Not to be missed!

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

The meal service is limited to breakfast: served in a room on the ground floor, with no view of the outside (windows with opaque window panes), and no tables arranged on the terrace. The one that is open on the roof between April and October is only used for having a drink in the daytime. As the tables in the breakfast room are a little cramped, it is best to come at the beginning (7 am) or at the end (10 am) of service. Rich continental breakfast: hard-boiled eggs, cheese, cooked meats, yoghurts, croissants, bread rolls and fresh fruit. You help yourself to filter coffee. Expressos and cappuccinos are brought to your table. Another area then takes over in the adjacent room. However, if you like the view from the roof terrace, reserve a table in the Atlante Star restaurant for dinner: it has the same view of the Vatican, but a little closer!

    To know

The Atlante Garden is owned by the same hotel group as the Atlante Star, which is a street away. There is no restaurant apart from the breakfast service. However, guests can have lunch or dinner in the "Les Etoiles" restaurant of the Atlante Star. In the room with a view, or on the roof terrace (between April and November). Think of reserving a table, as the restaurant is very popular.
    Accommodation Advice
All of the rooms of the Atlante Garden have a bathtub with massaging jets: don't forget your bath salts so you can make the most of it! Note: smoking is prohibited in this hotel

Very well situated for discovering the Vatican without even leaving the hotel, the Atlante Star is one of the few Roman hotels to have a panoramic view classified as world heritage by Unesco. From some rooms and from the restaurant, you have an excellent view of Saint Peter's basilica: superb at sunset. If the hotel is full, you can also stay at the Atlante Garden (belonging to the same hotel group and situated one street away), and then come to the Atlante Star for dinner.

As with most large chain hotels, the NH Leonardo da Vinci is efficiently run, strategically placed and slightly impersonal. Dealing mostly with business clientele during the week, the hotel becomes more leisure based at the weekend, creating two entirely different atmospheres depending on when you are staying. But whatever purpose you have in Rome, the hotel provides a perfect location from which to get to know Rome. A good night's sleep is guaranteed here, in one of Rome's upmarket, peaceful areas.

Though this 70s-built hotel is not quite an eye-pleaser from the outside, the interior is fresh from a 2012 renovation and full of soothing pastel shades. Spacious throughout, relaxing and quiet, the Visconti is the perfect weekender hotel for those looking not for luxury but comfort and practicality. It is large but very efficiently run, making it extremely popular with business clients and large groups. The surrounding neighbourhood is residential and within walking distance from the famous Vatican city and its wonderful churches and museums. Its best features are its small private garden where lunch is served during the summer months, and its large rooftop terrace with plenty of space for events and barbeques.

An upmarket hotel, well located for exploring the Piazza Navona and the Trastevere district on foot, the St George is recommended for a week-end away from it all... This will give you the opportunity to try the spa (maybe a treatment or two and a dip in the hydrotherapy bath), sample the restaurant menu and hang out in the wine bar. Ideally you would stay here when the panoramic terrace is open (between April and October). In practice, though, if the rates offer a better deal in January, don't hesitate to stay at the St George: the decor in the hotel (all beige, grey-green and glossy brown) makes it feel more like winter than summer anyway.

Charm exudes from every furnishing and corner of this delightful Art Deco hotel, situated in the heart of Italy's buzzing capital. Everything, from the lamps that dimly light the small bar to the grand bedframes and heavy room keys, screams faded 1920s extravagance and class. Three buildings make up the entire hotel, each with a slightly different character and style. The tranquil inner courtyard is heavenly after a busy day in the centre of Rome and you'll find nothing lacking from the small bar, with its lingering smell of pipe tobacco.

The Hotel de Russie is one of the grand hotels in Rome with a garden. A privilege that is all the more remarkable because this garden, which backs on to the Monte Pincio (the hill leading to the Villa Borghese Park from the Piazza del Popolo), gives the impression of being in the very heart of the countryside. Perfect for getting away from the commotion and noise of Rome (which begins at the hotel door) whilst remaining just a few minutes by foot from Piazza di Spagna and the elegant shops in the area.

For those travellers wanting a slightly more personal feel from their stay in Rome, look no further than Babuino 181. This charming little boutique hotel offers one of the warmest welcomes in the city and guarantees both comfort and style for as long a stay as you wish. Handily named after its address, Babuino 181 aims to provide its guests with a high level of independence and privacy. The spacious rooms and comfortable common areas make for a hotel that you could quite happily not leave for a week. Though the hotel itself is only two years old, the building dates back to the 18th century, adding a true Italian authenticity. Its location on one of the city's oldest and most lively streets means that you're staying in, as well as alongside, all the Roman history your heart could desire.

Take the winding roads through the gardens of the Villa Borghese (one of Rome's most historic villas and gardens) and you will emerge into the peaceful neighbourhood of Parioli, distinctly different from Rome's usual bustling centre. Here, flanked by large private residences, the Aldrovandi Palace hotel offers its guests an exclusive place to rest their heads. As a Leading Hotel of the World, the hotel is used to welcoming guests who expect only the very best - attentive staff, gourmet food and comfort. And this is exactly what it delivers, with elegance, style and a two-Michelin-star restaurant to boot.

It may be on the list of Rome's hotels but the Villa Spalletti Trivelli is quite different from your ordinary hotel experience. It cannot be confined to any kind of category, nor can it be given any stars. It is simply in a class above the rest - an aristocratic home away from home if you will. Still owned by Count Trivelli and his wife, the Villa was converted from the Count's private residence and still retains its original furniture. You must be looking for the very best in luxury accommodation (with a budget to match) to appreciate the magnificence of this 20th century property, its beautiful rooms and gardens. Rest assured though, that you will receive only the best in exclusive service and ultimate privacy. If official photos tend to exaggerate the elegance of the hotels they picture, then those of Spalletti Trivelli don't do it justice. You must be sat in the grand drawing room with a hot drink or snuggled up in the library with a book in order to really see the restored beauty of one of Rome's most exclusive addresses.
