It's as much a tourist attraction as it is romantic, but it's one of the must-sees! In the centre of the Italian capital, between the Piazza di Spagna and the Quirinale, lies the Trevi Fountain. A hymn to grandiose Baroque and the call of the open sea. At least a dozen sculptors succeeded one another in creating this architectural and artistic ensemble in the 18th century, helping to make this monument one of the symbols of Papal Rome.
Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to admire it every year, in search of the perfect selfie. The Trevi Fountain, with its traditional coin toss and world-famous La dolce vita, is a source of inspiration all over the world. While tourists sometimes flock there in the middle of the day, there are a handful of places where you can enjoy it for dinner or a night out...
Set against the Palazzo Poli, the Trevi Fountain takes up a whole section of the square where it stands. The triumphal arch-shaped building is even more imposing. At 26.3 metres high and 49.15 metres deep, it is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome.
Surrounded by crowds of people day and night, the Trevi Fountain stands at the point where one of the first aqueducts of antiquity ended. Requested by the Pope to honour the Aqua Virgo aqueduct, it is now one of the biggest attractions in the heart of the city.

The fountain's central sculpture depicts the ocean god Neptune, who in ancient Greek and Roman mythology was the personification of the sea. The imposing statue towers above the rocks and guides a shell-shaped carriage pulled by two winged horses, the restless horse and the placid horse, symbols of the stormy and calm seas respectively. At their feet are two tritons.
The water gushes out and fills each of the three smaller pools before emptying into the main pool, all blending together to create an overall effect of majesty and grandeur. Nicola Salvi's grandiose Baroque masterpiece is undoubtedly one of the world's most iconic fountains.
1, 2 or 3 coins? A monetary tradition...
For tourists visiting Rome, there is a long-standing tradition of throwing one, two or three coins into the fountain, according to their wishes. To make your wish come true, you have to do things properly and follow a certain ceremony...
You start by standing with your back to the fountain, holding the coin in your right hand and throwing it over your left shoulder. Anyone who chooses to throw a coin will have the chance to return to Rome. If you're feeling sentimental, throw in two coins to fall in love with a beautiful Italian. The most persistent, who wish to find love in the Italian capital and get married, are invited to throw three!
It's a welcome gesture, imitated by the hordes of visitors who are unwittingly doing a good deed: the money raised goes into the coffers of the Caritas association, which helps the homeless.

In the cinema, the square and its fountain have often proved to be a film location adored by directors since the 1950s. The famous scene with Anita Ekberg and Marcello Mastroianni in La dolce vita contributed greatly to the worldwide fame of this monument, adding a touch of romance that is not immediately obvious. When Mastroianni died in 1996, the water flow was stopped and the statues were dressed in black. A powerful gesture that shows the extent of the tourist buzz around the Trevi Fountain since the blockbuster film was released.
In The White Sheikh, The Fountain of Love, Tears of Joy and A Summer in Rome, key moments in these productions are also set against the backdrop of Nicola Salvi's work.
