Belonging to the same group as the Yes Hotel, and located in the same area, the Hotel Des Artistes is for customers passing through and who need a simple hotel near to the Termini train station. Families and groups of friends will find a place to stay here in the triple and quadruple rooms. However, you do not need to be sensitive to noise, as the hotel is badly soundproofed, and often noisy (due to customers' arrivals and departures).

    • To know

    • On the via Villafranca, where it crosses the via Vicenza. The Termini station (trains for airports, underground station) is 656 ft away. The closest underground station is Castro Pretorio, two minutes away by foot.
The airport of Fiumicino is 16 mi away; and Ciampino 9 mi away. Allow for a 45 minutes trip for Fiumicino, and 30 minutes for Ciampino.

    • There are 33 private rooms (apart from the dormitories) in the main hotel building, and 15 in the adjacent annexe. This accommodation is arranged in doubles, triples, and quadruples, which is good for families. Make sure that your room has a private bathroom. Actually, there is just one floor in the hotel building that has the rooms with a shared bathroom on the landing. As the private rooms in the annexe are more recent, they all have a bathroom. Whether with a shower or a bathroom, and depending on the space, a hairdryer and welcome products (22 ml) of the "Aquae" make (as with the Yes Hotel, as it belongs to the same group) are all available. As for orientation, the rooms can look over the via Villafranca, or over a backyard with coloured facades. Regarding space, you have just enough room to move around in (129 sq ft in a double room, and 215 sq ft to 269 sq ft in a triple or quadruple room). Simple furnishing, the furniture and bed head being in varnished wood, with a reproduction of a famous painting on the wall (for example, Venus at her looking-glass by Velazquez), a television, air conditioning, telephone, fridge (no mini-bar), safe (free). The biggest problem is the noise: the floor tiling and marble on the staircases amplify the slightest sound.
    • Open in 1994, the Hotel Des Artistes has one five-storey building crowned with a terrace and annexe located in the building just next door. Dormitories and private rooms are in both buildings. Having gone through reception (which only serves for receiving your room key and settling your bill: there is no sitting area to linger in); the only place to relax in is the bar by the breakfast dining room (too small for the hotel's capacity), and the roof terrace when it does not rain. Fortunately, this terrace is open in all seasons (as there can be good weather at all times in Rome). It is equipped with metal tables, woven plastic armchairs, and sunshades when it is hot. You can have a drink there, and also settle down with a book and enjoy the view over the orange Roman facades, with their red-tiled roofs and green shutters. Relatively quiet, depending on the traffic in the street below (the via Villafranca).
    • Breakfast is not included in the room price (unless there is a special offer), but costs only 4.40. Presented as a buffet (continental), you can eat cereal, rolls, croissants, cheese, salami, hard-boiled eggs, and fresh fruit. All this is set out in the bar area by the breakfast dining-room: you eat in this room or on the terrace (only when the weather is good, but in all seasons). As the breakfast dining-room and terrace are not very big, if all the hotel's customers descend on it at the same time, crowding is inevitable. Come preferably at the beginning of the service. The hotel does not serve meals during the daytime or in the evening. The bar can give you a drink, but you have every reason for going out into the district: the drinks are cheaper, and the setting more typical.
    • The Hotel Des Artistes offers both hotel rooms and youth hostel dormitories. As it is not far from the Termini station, it receives a lot of people: customers who are passing through who can arrive early or very late. Expect suitcase noise in the corridors at all times. As the hotel is badly soundproofed, you could have trouble sleeping if you are a light sleeper.
      Accommodation advice
In order not to be too disturbed by late arrivals and morning departures, ask for a room in the hotel annexe, previously the "albergho Sandra": there are less rooms than in the main building, and therefore less noise.

A central hotel, situated a stone's throw away from Termini station (ideal for train journeys to the airport), Yes opened recently and has all the necessary comforts for modern day demands. Therefore the rooms are well soundproofed, they offer a small basket of hospitality products in the bathrooms (rare in mid range hotels) and the decoration is modern. To be recommended for accommodation without spending too much.

A very simple hotel, not far from Termini station, with the advantage of having been renovated recently. To be chosen when the announced prices correspond to those of the low season. The Marco Polo stands out only because of its bedrooms, which are very well taken care of. There is no original feature. What a shame there was no terrace on the roof, or no stylish decoration - that some other hotels in the same category also offer their guests.

This is the right choice if you're looking for a good place to stay at a lower price. Its location is both its plus point (next to Termini station) and its drawback (the hotel overlooks a very busy street). It is handy if you are arriving late, plan to leave early, or are staying on a tight budget. The rooms are simple but comfortable, and have undergone recent improvements.

Breakfast with a view, and not only for the lucky few in the best rooms: the Marcella Royal has the asset of a terrace restaurant in the morning, under a veranda in winter, al fresco in summer also, overlooking all of Rome (and as a matter of fact, the Roman roofs, covered in red tiles, with garden-balconies here and there, really are picturesque). As for the rooms, various categories and styles are available: ideally, you should ask to see a few before choosing.

Opened in 2009, UNA hotel still looks brand new, both inside and out. Modern, minimalist and strangely quirky in parts (the zebra print couch in the entrance hall should give you an idea of what is in store), almost all guests will tell you that UNA is very good value for money. This is a hotel completely at odds with the ancient city around it and provides an ultra-modern alternative to most of Rome's authentically crumbling hotels. Of exceptional note are its extremely polite and attentive staff and superb bar and restaurant.

This is an historic hotel, which doesn't seem to have changed since it opened in 1875. As this type of hotel is disappearing and the prices are very reasonable, we shall recommend the Massimo d'Azeglio to anyone who likes old-style holidays. Well located, in the heart of the city centre: so it is not the quietest of its category, but the interior and the restaurant are so quaint that they are definitely worth spending some time in.

Of the three hotels in the Bettoja chain situated on the Via Cavour, the Atlantico is the most modest, but not necessarily the cheapest. To be chosen when the other two hotels are full. If this is the case, you will be reassured by the breakfast buffet, served at the Mediterraneo, and you will be able to use the gym in the basement like the guests of the Massimo d'Azeglio.

Extremely popular with business clients, the rooms are spacious and simple, the breakfast is hearty and Termini train station is so close that it's actually visible from the hotel's higher floors.

The Hotel de Russie is one of the grand hotels in Rome with a garden. A privilege that is all the more remarkable because this garden, which backs on to the Monte Pincio (the hill leading to the Villa Borghese Park from the Piazza del Popolo), gives the impression of being in the very heart of the countryside. Perfect for getting away from the commotion and noise of Rome (which begins at the hotel door) whilst remaining just a few minutes by foot from Piazza di Spagna and the elegant shops in the area.

Take the winding roads through the gardens of the Villa Borghese (one of Rome's most historic villas and gardens) and you will emerge into the peaceful neighbourhood of Parioli, distinctly different from Rome's usual bustling centre. Here, flanked by large private residences, the Aldrovandi Palace hotel offers its guests an exclusive place to rest their heads. As a Leading Hotel of the World, the hotel is used to welcoming guests who expect only the very best - attentive staff, gourmet food and comfort. And this is exactly what it delivers, with elegance, style and a two-Michelin-star restaurant to boot.

It may be on the list of Rome's hotels but the Villa Spalletti Trivelli is quite different from your ordinary hotel experience. It cannot be confined to any kind of category, nor can it be given any stars. It is simply in a class above the rest - an aristocratic home away from home if you will. Still owned by Count Trivelli and his wife, the Villa was converted from the Count's private residence and still retains its original furniture. You must be looking for the very best in luxury accommodation (with a budget to match) to appreciate the magnificence of this 20th century property, its beautiful rooms and gardens. Rest assured though, that you will receive only the best in exclusive service and ultimate privacy. If official photos tend to exaggerate the elegance of the hotels they picture, then those of Spalletti Trivelli don't do it justice. You must be sat in the grand drawing room with a hot drink or snuggled up in the library with a book in order to really see the restored beauty of one of Rome's most exclusive addresses.

To make sure of a pleasant stay, impress your other half with a setting that lacks neither gilding nor history, and to discover ancient (or Renaissance) Rome within walking distance of your hotel, reserve a room at the Exedra. This is a luxury hotel but it is not flashy, with attentive and discreet service. It is like living in a palace and, from June to September, you really can get a feel of the "dolce vita", with the open-air swimming-pool on the roof.

For true boutique style, class and impeccable service, the Lord Byron is our top choice of places to stay in Rome. There is a reason that this hotel has such a loyal returning clientele and it is simply because the service is outstanding. An upmarket hotel, well located for exploring the Piazza Navona and the Trastevere district on foot, the St George is recommended for a week-end away from it all... This will give you the opportunity to try the spa (maybe a treatment or two and a dip in the hydrotherapy bath), sample the restaurant menu and hang out in the wine bar. Ideally you would stay here when the panoramic terrace is open (between April and October). In practice, though, if the rates offer a better deal in January, don't hesitate to stay at the St George: the decor in the hotel (all beige, grey-green and glossy brown) makes it feel more like winter than summer anyway.
