For true boutique style, class and impeccable service, the Lord Byron is our top choice of places to stay in Rome. There is a reason that this hotel has such a loyal returning clientele and it is simply because the service is outstanding. From the moment you walk up the steps to the reception, a relaxed atmosphere washes over you. It may be out of the immediate vicinity of Rome's biggest attractions, but it is all the better for it. After a long day of absorbing the endless roman culture, it is true heaven to come back to a hotel that really feels like home.

    Location 5.0 /10

The Lord Byron is nestled between grand villas and sweeping driveways in one of Rome's most upscale suburban neighbourhoods. Situated north of the centre, not far from the sprawling Villa Borghese (one of Rome's most historic villas and gardens), the hotel is blissfully quiet and perfect for those not wanting to be constantly barging past tourists for the best view of Rome's main attractions. Take the time to visit the stunning Borghese Gallery and gardens, as well as Piazza del Popolo with its impressive obelisk and twin Churches, both within ten minutes walking distance. The nearest metro is Flaminia, not far from Piazza del Popolo, which runs to Rome's Termini train station. For all other attractions, you need only talk to the endless fountain of knowledge that is the hotel's concierge. He will provide you with everything you need to know, tickets to attractions, private tours and even Ferrari car rental.

    Accommodation 8.90 /10

With regards to size, the Lord Byron offers extremely spacious rooms. Even the smallest of the double classics at 20m² provides plenty of space for two. Otherwise choose from a Double Deluxe (25-30m²), a Junior Suite (35m²) or a Suite (45m²). Beds are queen size but can be split into twins on request and all are luxuriously comfortable. Twelve of the 32 rooms have balconies, with some suites comprising their own private terrace. In keeping with the communal areas, each room has been decorated to perfection, with original works of art adorning the walls and the Art Deco style running throughout. The highlight is perhaps the large walk-in wardrobes, with plenty of room for any extra purchases you make while out and about in Rome. The luxury continues in the bathrooms, with a separate bath and shower, in Carrara marble, tiles or wood. Bathrobes, slippers and bath products from Italian perfumer, Lorenzo Villoresi, are provided for all guests on arrival. The mini bar provides both soft and alcoholic drinks and bottled water is free of charge. VIP treatment comes as standard for all guests but those on their honeymoon will be find a bottle of sparkling wine waiting for them in their room, while those with a birthday or anniversary will be treated to a complimentary bottle of wine.

    Overview 8.70 /10

The hotel's beautiful art deco interior is certainly its best selling point. As soon as you enter the well-appointed lobby, the attention to detail is evident. The reception desk to the right will welcome you in just about any language you feel comfortable speaking and deposit you on the rather plush sofas in the waiting area. Decorated with large portraits of lavishly dressed women and curious modern sculptures, it is not difficult to imagine Byron himself in similar refined surroundings. As the lobby is the hotel's only communal space, guests are free to relax here whenever they wish, or use the computer with internet access. If not, laptops are also available from reception for use in communal areas or rooms with the hotel's free Wi-Fi. Downstairs is the hotel's restaurant, Il Sapori, and the Lounge Bar. Disabled access is unfortunately not a strong point, especially as a long set of steps lead up to the entrance and the corridors are a little hard to navigate.

    Food and drink 8.90 /10

Lovers of wine will be in for a real treat at the Lord Byron. An award-winning wine cellar awaits guests, as well as the opportunity for a wine tasting session during your stay. The wine is complimented by some of the best roman cuisine we tasted in the city. The menu is seasonal, experimental and most importantly local. Open for both lunch and dinner (except Sundays), choose from an array of risottos, pastas, fish and more. Make sure to leave room for dessert, which is something of a speciality whichever one you decide to taste. For questions on wine, from the most obvious to the most specific, a professional sommelier is always on hand and extremely helpful when deciding what wine to pair with your meal. A buffet breakfast is included in the room price and is also served in the restaurant between 7.00am and 10.30am. The hotel provides an impressive range of freshly squeezed juices and Italian coffees, as well as freshly baked bread, pastries, yoghurts, fresh fruit, cereals and eggs (prepared however you wish).

    To know

Certainly not a standard name for a hotel in the Italian capital, the Lord Byron is so called simply because it is easily remembered. The hotel prides itself on being one to which customers will return time and again, hence the necessity of an easily recognisable name. Owner Amedeo Ottaviani is also a great admirer of Byron's works and fiercely proud of the hotel named in the British poet's honour.

Built in the 1930s, the Lord Byron was, until the 1960s, home to a noble family of Rome. Since it was taken over by the current owner, it has steadily established itself as one of the finest hotels that Rome has to offer. Just as much an art gallery as a hotel, you will find classic examples of well-known European artists' works in both communal areas and private quarters. Take the time to glance over those in the communal areas or ask a member of staff for their histories - each one has its own significance.

An excellent location in the chic and hip side of Rome: the hotel is located on the famous via Veneto, and the beautiful boutiques on the piazza di Spagna are accessible within a five minute walk. The Marriott Flora is, however, not part of the category of luxury hotels, so you know what to expect as far as the decoration is concerned, and you will be pleased as far your wallet is concerned. The hotel building overlooks the park of villa Borghese, and the top floor was designed as a terrace sheltered by a glass canopy for breakfast: a view of the trees in the heart of the city, that's the lovely particularity of this hotel.

The Hotel de Russie is one of the grand hotels in Rome with a garden. A privilege that is all the more remarkable because this garden, which backs on to the Monte Pincio (the hill leading to the Villa Borghese Park from the Piazza del Popolo), gives the impression of being in the very heart of the countryside. Perfect for getting away from the commotion and noise of Rome (which begins at the hotel door) whilst remaining just a few minutes by foot from Piazza di Spagna and the elegant shops in the area.

Charm exudes from every furnishing and corner of this delightful Art Deco hotel, situated in the heart of Italy's buzzing capital. Everything, from the lamps that dimly light the small bar to the grand bedframes and heavy room keys, screams faded 1920s extravagance and class. Three buildings make up the entire hotel, each with a slightly different character and style. The tranquil inner courtyard is heavenly after a busy day in the centre of Rome and you'll find nothing lacking from the small bar, with its lingering smell of pipe tobacco.

With only four suites, Margutta 54 really is an out-of-the-ordinary hotel experience. Nestled into a corner of a quiet courtyard, surrounded by private residences, artists' workshops and drooping willow trees, it provides one of Rome's ultimate exclusive locations. For the independently minded traveller, this hotel is paradise, with guests left to come and go as they please and minimal staff to disturb the tranquillity. Each suite is unique in size and furniture but the beautiful contemporary Italian decoration features throughout, extending even into the softly lit corridors and entrance hall. Comfort, style and superb location are the corner stones of this hotel, making for a truly welcoming experience, however long you decide to stay.

Here is a hotel that is thought of as an art gallery, or even a contemporary museum: living place, the type of design where the rooms blend in with one another, evoking the minimalist, neo-baroque and post-modernist styles here and there. As there aren't many rooms, you will have to book in advance. If the hotel is fully booked, you can always come here to have a drink and enjoy the decor. Especially as the Spain Square area (nearby) is packed with shopping temptations.

This charming little boutique hotel offers one of the warmest welcomes in the city and guarantees both comfort and style for as long a stay as you wish. Handily named after its address, Babuino 181 aims to provide its guests with a high level of independence and privacy. Though the hotel itself is only two years old, the building dates back to the 18th century, adding a true Italian authenticity. Its location on one of the city's oldest and most lively streets means that you're staying in, as well as alongside, all the Roman history your heart could desire.

It may be on the list of Rome's hotels but the Villa Spalletti Trivelli is quite different from your ordinary hotel experience. It cannot be confined to any kind of category, nor can it be given any stars. It is simply in a class above the rest - an aristocratic home away from home if you will. Still owned by Count Trivelli and his wife, the Villa was converted from the Count's private residence and still retains its original furniture. You must be looking for the very best in luxury accommodation (with a budget to match) to appreciate the magnificence of this 20th century property, its beautiful rooms and gardens. Rest assured though, that you will receive only the best in exclusive service and ultimate privacy. If official photos tend to exaggerate the elegance of the hotels they picture, then those of Spalletti Trivelli don't do it justice. You must be sat in the grand drawing room with a hot drink or snuggled up in the library with a book in order to really see the restored beauty of one of Rome's most exclusive addresses.

To make sure of a pleasant stay, impress your other half with a setting that lacks neither gilding nor history, and to discover ancient (or Renaissance) Rome within walking distance of your hotel, reserve a room at the Exedra. An upmarket hotel, well located for exploring the Piazza Navona and the Trastevere district on foot, the St George is recommended for a week-end away from it all... This will give you the opportunity to try the spa (maybe a treatment or two and a dip in the hydrotherapy bath), sample the restaurant menu and hang out in the wine bar. Ideally you would stay here when the panoramic terrace is open (between April and October). In practice, though, if the rates offer a better deal in January, don't hesitate to stay at the St George: the decor in the hotel (all beige, grey-green and glossy brown) makes it feel more like winter than summer anyway.

Situated next to the crumbling, magnificent Colosseum, this hotel will set your mouth in a constant 'O', and not just over the view. It may not look like much from the outside, with its plain white washed walls and crumbling Roman shutters, but the understated luxury that awaits you inside is of a completely different world. The tiny hotel has only 15 rooms, making it personal, private and a wonderful place to take a few days relaxation.
