The Irazù volcano is one of Costa Rica's best-known active volcanoes. It is located in the Cordillera de Talamanca, near the country's capital. It rises to an altitude of over 3,400 metres and offers spectacular views over the San José valley. The volcano last erupted in 1963. Since then, it has experienced several minor eruptions without causing any serious damage. It is one of the most visited volcanoes in the country, as it is also one of the most fascinating. The Irazú's main crater is immense, with a diameter of around 1.3 km and a depth of 300 metres. It is filled with a steaming acid lake that changes colour depending on the weather and volcanic activity. A sight as dangerous as it is magnificent.
