A glimpse into the history of Volvo Cork Week

It all began in 1978, with the first edition of the annual Volvo Cork Week competition. Back then, the race, organised by the Royal Cork Yacht Club, the world's oldest yacht club, brought together just fifty boats. However, over the years, this number has grown quickly, and today over 180 take part in the event.

Five days of race

During the five days of competition, over 8,000 sailors and spectators come to Crosshaven village to enjoy the festivities. Taking place close to the Royal Cork Yacht Club, this week is renowned for its inclusive and community atmosphere, welcoming sailors of all levels, from first-time racers to seasoned professionals. In fact, it's a great opportunity to learn from your competitors during this gathering and improve your skills, especially if you're adopting the generational tradition and racing with your family for the first time.

What's more, these five days of unforgettable regattas offer a variety of race formats such as harbour, coastal and even Windward Leeward courses, which will appeal to all sailing enthusiasts. It also hosts championship-level races such as The 1720 Europeans and the Beaufort Cup. However, if you don't want to miss the highlight of the week for anything in the world, head for the famous Harbour Race. This race is unique in that it brings together all the cork week participants in one single race. This lively event is well worth it, especially if you find the best spot to admire the spectacle.

Thus, if you've always dreamed of taking part in a unique sailing race, now's your chance! In fact, it's very easy to enter the competition. All you have to do is register on the official Volvo Cork Week website, once registration for the next competition is open.

For those staying ashore

The coastal village is not only the backdrop for stunning scenery and splendid views of Cork Harbour, it also becomes a lively venue during Cork Week, hosting a wide range of activities to suit everyone. Indeed, for those staying ashore, the village welcomes Volvo Cork Week Event Village. Indeed, if you lose track of your favourite racing boat during one of the races, don’t worry as there’s plenty of fun, food and drinks to keep you busy before the finish line. And as soon as the racing stops, the party starts! It's time to celebrate a great day's racing to the sound of live music, whether or not you took part in the effort. What's more, if you prefer to visit the surrounding area in your spare time, you'll be pleased to know that this region is ideal for discovering beautiful coastal scenery on your walks.
