Our 10 favourite hotels in Spain

Home to major hotel groups such as Riu, Barcelo and Iberostar, Spain is also the land of Paradors, hotels set in historic monuments, convents and castles. But the hotel offer in the land of Cervantes is not limited to these postcard addresses! Charming fincas, thalassos, club hotels with French-speaking entertainment, palaces, theme hotels in the Portaventura theme park, trendy hotels in Ibiza, historic palaces in major cities such as Seville, Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia... Only 10 hotels had to be chosen, and the selection was tough. Here are our favourite addresses in Spain.

1. Kempinski Hotel Bahia, in Estepona

© Kempinski Hotel Bahía Beach Resort & Spa / Booking.com

The Kempinsky Hotel Bahia is an imposing ochre-coloured resort with a Moorish feel, situated by the sea, 2 km from the fishing village of Estepona. Everything here is dedicated to relaxation: the spa, the three superb swimming pools, the comfort of the rooms, all with sea views, like the restaurants, the tranquillity of the gardens and the secluded beach. A good address for a peaceful, comfortable holiday.

© Kempinski Hotel Bahía Beach Resort & Spa / Booking.com

Once a member of the prestigious 'The Leading Hotels of the World' label, the building occupies an imposing ochre-coloured structure with highly original Arabo-Andalusian-style architecture, designed by the Bolivian-Chilean architect Melvin Villarroel, who had previously introduced this Moorish concept at the Sheraton La Caleta and the Abama Golf and Spa in Tenerife. It has to be said that Africa is just across the road: you can see the Moroccan coastline on a clear day, which is often!

2. Finca Cortesin, in the hills above Estepona

© Finca Cortesin / Booking.com

This charming finca nestles in the hills 14 km from Estepona, 1 km from the beaches of the Costa del Sol, in a 200-hectare garden including a 30-hectare olive orchard and a 70-hectare golf course, 5 km from the charming white village of Casares.

Step outside and admire the panorama that stretches out before you: the azure blue sea, the surrounding countryside, the golf course in the foreground, the sierra in the background. As for the rectangular swimming pool, it's huge and stunning with its emerald blue backdrop. Don't get carried away: it's the small one, only 35 metres long, which gives the restaurant its name: the pool 35 restaurant, one of the six restaurants on the estate. A second pool is hidden away a little further along the estate. It's a 50-metre-long rectangular Olympic swimming pool, framed by palm trees. Finca Cortesin boasts a prestigious 7,000-metre, 18-hole golf course (one of the longest in Europe), as well as a superb spa.

4. Cap Rocat, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Bay of Palma

© Cap Rocat, a Small Luxury Hotel of the World / Booking.com

Hotel Cap Rocat is a former 19th-century military fortress located in the most unspoilt spot in the Bay of Palma de Mallorca. Nestling on a private peninsula, it is perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the beautiful cove of Cala Blava, a protected natural area. It's not like entering a windmill! You first have to pass through a gate onto a long private road that leads to the garrison, then through a guarded gate. Then you enter the bowels of the fortress. Past the fortifications and tall wooden gates, just like in a castle, you discover an enchanting place, reminiscent of the Alhambra palace in Granada, with its fountains, sculptures and lush gardens.

© Cap Rocat, a Small Luxury Hotel of the World / Booking.com

Sheltered by the outer walls of the 19th-century fortress, 31 spacious suites housed in former firing ranges and ammunition stores offer guests the unique opportunity to sleep in former military headquarters while enjoying the comforts and services of a luxury hotel. The spectacular suites, each with a patio and private terraces, offer breathtaking views. Seven suites even include a private swimming pool! A panoramic terrace offers incredible views over the bay.

8. Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity, high above Maspalomas

© Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity / Booking.com

You wonder where the winding road will take you as it winds its way up a barren hill, until you see two superb 18-hole golf courses and an astonishing building that's hard to describe: a building made up of eleven blocks of local red stone between seven and eleven storeys high. This establishment of almost 40,000 m² is impressive from every point of view: location, services, architecture and design, all created by professionals who have definitively mastered their craft. Allen + Philip, an architectural firm from the US state of Arizona, was responsible for the construction.

© Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity / Booking.com

You wouldn't think it like this, but there are seven swimming pools! Some are so well hidden that most guests are unaware of their existence. The Sunset rooftop pool, the largest, is well worth a visit. Located on the 11th and top floor, this infinity pool with its aquatic bar offers a sumptuous panoramic view of the sea, the Maspalomas dunes and, in fine weather, the Teide volcano in Tenerife, the highest point in the Atlantic Ocean. A perfect cone, even more beautiful when covered in snow. The icing on the cake is that the sun sets in its direction. Needless to say, it's the place to be for a romantic cocktail in the early evening, in a trendy chill-out lounge atmosphere.

10. PortAventura Hotel Colorado Creek, in the heart of the theme park

© PortAventura Hotel Colorado Creek / Booking.com

The Colorado Creek houses 150 rooms in a building that looks like a big American Wild West chalet in the forests and mountains of Colorado. Wood is omnipresent, and the building is surrounded by a pleasantly fragrant pine forest, where the wooden bungalows are located. We reach our rooms by walking through long corridors decorated in the theme of the Wild West, to the sound of Western music, between horse saddles, cowboy outfits and paintings depicting scenes of the Gold Rush, grandiose nature and wild animals, a theme that is repeated in the room.

© PortAventura Hotel Colorado Creek / Booking.com

The Creek View buffet is top-notch! In the morning, a good breakfast prepares you for the long, intense day ahead in the PortAventura park: typical Menorcan pastries in the shape of a spiral (ensaimada), pan con tomato and even Iberian ham! To top it all off, the orange juice is freshly squeezed and the coffee is excellent: Premium Gran Seleccion Café Saula from Barcelona, 100% Arabica!

Good to know: you get a Premium Express Bracelet so you don't have to queue at the most popular attractions, entry to Ferrari Land and a discount at the Caribe water park.
