An iodised walk in Morne Brabant

It's hard not to be taken aback by the towering stature of Morne Brabant, the island's natural and historical landmark! Perched at an altitude of 550 metres in the south-west of the island, the imposing mountain stands on a peninsula bordered by 4 km of beaches and filaos. Morne Brabant is a must for hiking enthusiasts. Climbing it takes you into lush natural surroundings and offers incredible panoramic views of the coastline and part of the island. What's more, the trail is accessible to all hikers, although there are a few steep sections where it's advisable to use your hands. After the effort, the comfort! At the foot of the mountain, the beaches reveal their most beautiful facets. On the programme: swimming, water sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing. This landscape was included on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2008 for its historical reference to slavery.

The history of Le Morne

Between the 18th and 19th centuries, Morne Brabant was a refuge for runaway slaves. According to legend, when slavery was abolished in 1835, the police were sent to Le Morne to inform them that they were now free. Unfortunately, fearing to be caught, the fugitive slaves preferred to die free by jumping into the void. Le Morne has since become the symbol of their fight for freedom. A small open-air museum at the foot of the mountain takes visitors back to those dark days.

The Morne Brabant hike

The ascent of Morne Brabant is the star attraction of the south-west region of Mauritius. To discover it, opt for a guided excursion lasting 3 to 4 hours. This walk allows you to discover the stories and legends of this mystical place. Accessible to all those in good physical condition, as well as children, this hike is not to be taken lightly. Some sections are worn and some sides are steep.

How difficult is this walk?

The first part is very gradual, with a well-marked path. Around the halfway point, the difficulty increases considerably. Throughout the first section of the hike, the guide informs hikers about the local plants and the history of Le Morne.

After a good half-hour, you reach the first viewpoint, where you also come across a "checkpoint" hut and a sign warning that the climb is becoming more dangerous. Only experienced climbers should go here. The path becomes less marked, narrower and steeper, so much so that you'll have to use your hands to climb the rocks. At the top, you can admire some of the most impressive views of Mauritius, from the hills to the forests and the myriad shades of blue of the sea. The hike is slow and challenging, but the views are well worth the effort.

Is it possible to do this walk without a guide?

The Morne peninsula is divided in two: the northern beaches are perfect for swimming, relaxing and enjoying the peaceful waters; the southern beaches, windier with waves, are for sports enthusiasts in search of thrills, suitable for kitesurfing and windsurfing. For kitesurfing lessons, we recommend the Yoaneye agency.

Dedicated to water sports, the beach on the south side of Le Morne welcomes many travelers who come here to kitesurf or windsurf.
