Between the 18th and 19th centuries, Morne Brabant was a refuge for runaway slaves. According to legend, when slavery was abolished in 1835, the police were sent to Le Morne to inform them that they were now free. Unfortunately, fearing to be caught, the fugitive slaves preferred to die free by jumping into the void. Le Morne has since become the symbol of their fight for freedom. A small open-air museum at the foot of the mountain takes visitors back to those dark days.
