Our journey along the Portuguese coast begins in the north, not far from Porto: from the mouth of the Douro, a long stretch of sandy beach stretches out along the ocean, before reaching the seaside resort of Espinho.
With its long coastline exposed to all the influences of the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal is also subject to its whims and moods: a distant swell driven by the westerly wind ends up on its shores, in some places in truly impressive fashion: some of the most beautiful waves in the world are on show here in Portugal! A renowned surfing destination, most of these spots are reserved for experienced surfers who are not afraid of the chills, but others are more open to amateurs. Without a surfboard, there's nothing to stop you admiring the spellbinding ballet of these giant waves, creating seascapes of striking beauty. From the north to the south of the Portuguese coast, in all seasons and all weathers, let's set off to discover the country's most beautiful waves, while at the same time exploring some of its most emblematic beaches.

Espinho has the advantage of being served by the train from Porto: 45 minutes later, you're at the beach, breathing in the Atlantic spray. Worth a try!

You'll be staying in a beautiful room!Nazaré, the most dizzying wave
A little further south, in the province of Estremadura, Nazaré is a must for lovers of great waves. A legendary spot where international surfing competitions are held, it was here that the world record for the biggest wave ever surfed was beaten: it was 23 metres high!
In the Praia da Norte, on days when the sea is rough, the waves of Nazaré become massive and monstrous: the spectacle is worth the diversions from the Forte de Sao Miguel Arcanjo, which offers an unbeatable view of the ocean.

The province of Estremadura is home to some of Portugal's finest surf spots. Not far from Nazaré, Peniche, a major fishing port, is also renowned for its magnificent ocean beaches and the quality of its waves.

It doesn't take long to drive south to reach Ericeira, just a 45-minute drive from Lisbon. This small fishing village with a seaside resort feel in summer is perfect for both enjoying a seaside holiday and, on occasion, surfing some of Portugal's most famous spots.

Colourful rooms and dormitories!Carcavelos, a stone's throw from Lisbon
A very popular beach with Lisboans, Praia de Carcavelos has no trouble filling up on sunny days. We're right on the outskirts of the Portuguese capital, on the road to Estoril and Cascais.

The waves are great for swimming, but there's also plenty of opportunity for novice surfers to practise and learn.
A really nice spot, even more so when you're not in the peak tourist season.

In the south of Portugal, an absolutely magnificent beach, facing the Atlantic Ocean alone: for the scenery alone, it's well worth making the detour to Praia do Amado. A renowned surfing spot, this beach regularly hosts international competitions.

Very popular in summer, it also offers a pleasant swimming environment, as the ocean is reputed to be clear and transparent when the sea is calm...

Sagres is also a well-known meeting place for surfers, as there is no shortage of good waves in the area.
Paúl do Mar, for surfing in Madeira
We're leaving the mainland and heading far out to sea, to the Portuguese island of Madeira. Spectacular with its sheer volcanic relief, lost in the middle of the Atlantic, it's not surprising that Madeira has some superb beaches, or a good surf spot either.

Paúl do Mar
