Saona, the Dominican Republic's largest island

This is the must-do excursion in the Dominican Republic, whether you're staying in Punta Cana, an hour and a half's drive away, or in Bayahibe, right across the road. Separated from the coast by a channel only 2 km long, the island of Saona, in the protected Cotubanamá national park, is nicknamed the "pearl of the Caribbean coast". Sheltered from the winds, it is the country's largest island at 130 km² (around 20 km long and 5 km wide). Its lagoon is home to migratory birds and protected flora and fauna, including pink flamingos, macaws and sea turtles. This island paradise is bordered by wide, unspoilt beaches of white sand dotted with palm trees, and is home to a single small village with colourful houses: Mano Juan.

The adventure begins on board the boat

On board, the atmosphere is Dominican, with merengue, bachata, dancers and Brugal rum! You're sure to see flying fish and, if you're lucky, dolphins. On the way there or back, the boat stops at the 'pool', a puddle on a sandbank where rum is served, and where you can dive for giant starfish (be careful not to touch them, thanks for them).

Giant starfish are plentiful off the coast of Saona and are easy to spot as the water is very clear and shallow.

Dream beaches

What are we going to do there? Go for a swim! The programme includes lounging on the beach, swimming in heavenly waters and snorkelling (masks, flippers and snorkels are provided by the excursion boat). Picnics and dancing to the sounds of merengue and bachata punctuate your day on this Caribbean island, home to just one village.

Saona really does look like a pirate island, like in Tintin and the Treasure of Rackham the Red or the Pirate of the Caribbean saga, with its colourful macaws, tropical vegetation and pristine beaches with translucent water. All that's left is to find the treasure!

Canto de la Playa is the island's most beautiful beach. It is well worth the effort, a 1-hour walk to the east of the only village of Saona, on the south coast, knowing that the boats will drop you off on the north coast...

A little history

Saona was first inhabited by the Tainos, the first inhabitants of the island of Hispaniola (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic). The first family to live on the island of Saona was a Taino tribe called Cotubanamá, who were driven out of Bayahibe by the Spanish in 1494. Saona was then called the island of Adamanay, literally "island of refuge", and it's easy to see why.

Later, when an Italian from Savona in northern Italy saw the island, he exclaimed: "Mama mia que Bella Savona", in homage to his home town. The island was renamed Savona. But the pronunciation of the v is not very strong in the Spanish language, so the name Saona soon took hold.

Like pirates, you'll land on a dream beach by boat. Except that here, deckchairs are waiting for you!

A single village

Mano Juan, the only village on the island of Saona, is lined with colourful wooden cottages painted with the island's typical whitewash. 500 inhabitants live here all year round. Internet and telephone services have only been available since 2019! Mano Juan is also home to the largest protected sea turtle nesting area in the Dominican Republic.

Where to stay on the island of Saona?

⭐ Saona lodge

There's not much on offer on the island of Saona, as you'd expect, but Mano Juan, the only village, is home to some lovely little addresses, including Saona Lodge, a 9-room bed and breakfast. You sleep in a charming, rustic wooden hut covered in cane. In the evening, you can watch a superb sunset. In the morning, we wake to the crowing of the rooster and enjoy the paradise beach all to ourselves!

Practical information for Saona

⛵ How do we get there?

The beach in the village of Bayahibe is the starting point for the excursion to the island of Saona. A small motorboat takes you in ten minutes to a large catamaran off the beach. The crossing to the island takes 1? hours on the outward journey by catamaran and only 1 hour on the return journey by speed boat, including a stop at the natural swimming pool. You can do the reverse if you wish.

🎒 What do we take with us?

There's no shade on board, so sunglasses, sun cream and a hat are compulsory! For the faint-hearted, pirate bandanas are on sale on the boat for 200 Dominican pesos (around €3.40). For lobster, it's 25 dollars (the same price as a massage on the beach)...

👛 How much does it cost?

All the hotels offer an excursion to the island of Saona, a must-see in the Dominican Republic. It costs $55 from hotels in Bayahibe and $90 from hotels in Punta Cana. If you have time, you can hire the services of a fisherman in Bayahibe for a day for 1,500 pesos (around 25 dollars). A solution that leaves you free to choose where to picnic and when to leave and return.

👉 A few tips

It would be a shame to confine yourself to the beaches facing the Bayahibe coast, where catamarans, boats and "lanchas" (small tourist craft) drop off visitors from far and wide. When the boats return at 3pm, little Saona is back to its picture-postcard landscapes.
