In the 1960s, a resident of Jordaan offered his sofa for rent to tourists visiting Amsterdam, and it was an instant success. In no time at all, the sofa became a bedroom, then two, then a floor, before the entire house was transformed into a hotel.
Covering an area of around one square kilometre, bounded to the east by the Prinsengracht canal and to the west by the Lijnbaansgracht canal, the Jordaan is THE picture-postcard landscape of Amsterdam. With its little bridges spanning the canals and its typical colourful houses behind which hide charming courtyards called 'Hofjes', it's the city's cutest district. The Jordaan is also a meeting place for artists and young bohemians, and where every alleyway has its own art gallery, coffee shop and brown café with a warm atmosphere. We'd love to move here permanently, but for now we'll settle for spending a few nights: here are our 5 favourite hotels in the Jordaan.

Despite the years and developments, the establishment has lost none of its authenticity and hospitality. You don't really feel like you're setting foot in a hotel, but rather arriving at the home of a friend, good old Mr Jordaan.
In the heart of the Jordaan, the hotel offers beautifully decorated rooms for one to three people, some with views over the Amsterdam canals. It even has a lift, which is rare in the 17th-century houses typical of the area. We also recommend you try out their delicious breakfast!

The four-star Hotel Mercier is a little jewel hidden away in the narrow streets of the Jordaan. Here, art deco meets contemporary elegance, giving the establishment a catchy, timeless style. Everywhere you look, you discover a new artistic element: vintage furniture, bronze statuettes, floral curtains, handmade tapestries...
There's also a play on textures and materials, from the wood flooring to the velvet sofas and the mosaics in the bathrooms. This joyful mix gives the place a glamorous and inspiring atmosphere.
The boutique hotel's 48 rooms can accommodate two to four people and are richly decorated, in keeping with the style of the public areas. Its bar-restaurant, ONS HUIS, serves healthy cuisine and creative cocktails. The hotel also has a charming private garden and offers bicycles for hire so you can explore Amsterdam by bike.

With over 100 kilometres of canals, Amsterdam isn't known as the 'Venice of the North' for nothing. The Jordaan itself is bounded by four canals. Slow moving boats, ducks and picturesque bridges add enormously to the district's charm - it's a view you'd love to have from your hotel room!
We've found the perfect spot, hidden away in a traditional Amsterdam house: the Amsterdam Wiechmann Hotel! Many of the hotel's two to four person rooms offer breathtaking views over the Amsterdam canals, and some even have a small balcony.
From the lounge, with its exposed wooden beams and unusual décor, you can watch people crossing one of the city's 1,300 bridges. We must also mention the delicious breakfast, which should be enjoyed overlooking the canals.
