History of Les Halles de Bacalan

Biltoki came up with the idea for this project, and it's not the first time they've designed warm, festive spaces. They have built other Halles, coworking spaces and places for sharing. All the events that take place year-round at Les Halles de Bacalan are managed by this company, including tastings, workshops and even concerts.

Why go there?

The Halles de Bacalan market offers tastings of specialities from all over the world. This 1,000 m² market brings together 22 producers to provide a quality service to its customers and the many visitors from elsewhere. It's a concept that satisfies the majority of locals and tourists alike, who can travel a few kilometres to discover the various goods on offer. You can have lunch on site or take away products such as vegetables, meat, fish and fruit. No matter how varied your tastes, Les Halles de Bacalan will have something for everyone. There's plenty to choose from, and you'll be delighted to set foot there.

The tables are high up, giving the impression of eating standing up. The principle behind Les Halles de Bacalan is based on that of the markets of yesteryear, where consumers originally spent most of their day choosing products and tasting them one after the other on large tables, in a spirit of conviviality. This style of market exists all over the world, particularly in South-East Asia.

The site includes two butchers, two fishmongers, a collective of producers, a poultry shop, a scaler, a cheesemonger, a wine merchant, a truffle grower, two greengrocers, an Italian, a Spanish and a vegetarian caterer, a foie gras specialist, an aperitif house, a baker, a café and a catering outlet. It's the ideal place to treat yourself and find all the products you want. During the week, employees from the shops next door sometimes come to Les Halles for their lunch break between 12 noon and 2pm, which makes for a very pleasant atmosphere. The Cité du Vin, the famous wine museum, is just behind the market and can be seen in the distance.

Who is it for?

The market attracts people of all ages. Children, teenagers, adults, as a couple, with friends or as a family, the market has a wide selection of products to suit everyone.

How much time should you devote to it?

A visit to the market lasts between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the number of people and the queues at each stall. For wine lovers, the walk can last slightly longer so you can enjoy more and chat with a glass in hand.
