Chicago and its lake, a remarkable natural setting

Lake Michigan is the city's most charming feature, facing Chicago on its eastern flank. Lake Michigan is the 5th largest lake in the world and the largest expanse of fresh water in the United States. With a total area of almost 58,000 km², it's even bigger than a country like Switzerland! The city undeniably benefits from this natural asset, which is enhanced by cycle paths, footpaths and numerous parks**. The fifth-largest lake in the world provides an endless horizon for the third-largest city in the United States. In fact, it gives Chicago an openness and a unique setting that is the envy of many American cities.

The city has several marinas from which to sail on the lake. The seaside feel is also evident in the many kilometres of sandy beaches. In fact, sandy coves are just a stone's throw from the buildings in the town centre! Fishing is also available in some parts of Lake Michigan.

Discover it all along the lake!

First thing to do: take a stroll along Lake Michigan. Whether you choose to walk, cycle or rollerblade, everything is possible along the lake shore! There are a number of trails and paths. One of these is the Lakefront Trail, which runs for almost 30 kilometres along Lake Michigan. As is often the case, it's accessible on foot, by bike and on skateboard!

It's a great opportunity to take in the Skyline and its buildings, the many beaches and the parks. As soon as the first fine days arrive, locals and tourists alike make the most of the area. Here, nature comes to the rescue for busy city dwellers.

Several parks border Lake Michigan. These include Lincoln Park, where you'll find bars, a concert hall and Lincoln Zoo. This is Chicago's free public zoo. Millennium Park is also home to museums and works of art, including the famous Cloud Gate sculpture and the Crown Fountain. Festivals and concerts are held outdoors in fine weather.

As an added bonus, Navy Pier is a must-see lakeside attraction for young and old alike. Once you've explored the many attractions, restaurants and shops, it's time to get some height! Head for the Centennial Wheel (admission charged from 11am to 8pm). At a height of 60 metres, it offers a breathtaking view of the whole of Chicago, its skyscrapers and Lake Michigan.

For children, the Chicago Children's Museum is another attraction not to be missed. This museum is also located in the Navy Pier area.

👉 When to go to Chicago to enjoy Lake Michigan?

There's no doubt that late spring and summer are the most recommended seasons. These are the times when you can make the most of outdoor activities. You should be aware, however, that the lake remains chilly, even in the height of summer. Temperatures rarely rise above 20 degrees.

Hiking, cycling and skateboarding between the lake and the buildings are all great activities!

In winter, the season is harsher, but the atmosphere of a cold day is also worth discovering. Christmas is a festive time of year around Navy Pier. Christmas decorations brighten up the city and ice rinks are set up.

How do I get to Chicago's Lake Michigan shoreline?

The part of the lake that concerns us is right in the middle of the city. This makes it easy to get to, whether you're coming by car, train, metro or bus.

The Chicago Transit Authority coordinates the bus and metro networks.

Where to park along Lake Michigan in Chicago?

Coming by car is clearly not the best solution. Even though there are plenty of underground car parks, they are still very expensive!
