Architecture and Chicago, the city rises above the rest

The city, forever scarred by the terrible fire of 1871, quickly recovered. The growth of the population and its dynamism contributed to the conception and design of a city built on high ground.

From the 1880s onwards, architects vied with each other for inspiration**, and a new city emerged, aided by the Chicago School of Architecture. The desire to build ever higher was the leitmotif of this generation. The high-rise building was born!

Today, the Chicago skyline is one of the most beautiful in the United States, rivalling New York's Manhattan. A whole host of stunning experiences await you here, so get moving!

Chicago, an architectural laboratory

As we have seen, it was after the terrible fire of 1871 that the city was transformed. Chicago became a veritable architectural laboratory.

In 1884, the first skyscraper was inaugurated, helped by the introduction of the lift!

It was also in Chicago that Frank Lloyd Wright came up with the idea of the 20th-century American house.

To admire his creativity, head for the residential district of Oak Park. This part of the city attracts Frank Lloyd Wright enthusiasts. The famous architect built his home and studio here at the end of the 19th century.

It was here that he developed the "prairie style". This architectural revolution changed the way people interacted with their homes. A new, more functional way of living, turned towards nature.
