Our 5 favourite hotels in Union Square, San Francisco's liveliest district

Union Square is located in the heart of San Francisco, between the financial district, the Civic Center and the South Market district. Designed in 1901 and renovated in 1990, the district owes its name of "Union Square" to the large demonstrations in support of the Army organised during the Civil War. Even today, it is at the heart of San Franciscan life, thanks in particular to the many concerts, public events and art exhibitions held here throughout the year. It is also home to the city's biggest department stores, from Bloomingdale's to Prada. Another advantage is that Union Square is well served by public transport and has the highest concentration of hotels in the city. Here you'll find hotels of all categories and prices, from luxurious Fairmonts and Westins to budget hotels.

From the soft whites and pale greys in the meeting areas and lobbies, to the bright reds, velvety navy blues and silky purples in the bedrooms: a veritable festival of colour.
