There's more to Ibiza than nightclubs! Discover the wild north of the island

Renowned for its nightlife, Ibiza has taken a quieter turn as a tourist destination in recent years. The north of the island is much wilder, revealing a different side of the Balearic Islands. Away from the crowded beaches, tourists can reconnect with nature in the heavenly coves along the coast. Hotel complexes have given way to small hotels or rooms on farms, and nightclubs are simply banned. Is Ibiza reinventing itself?

"I'm convinced that this is the tourism of the future".

The party may be in full swing in the south of Ibiza, but in the north of the island, at Sant Joan de Labritja, nature is more the order of the day. This side of the island is much more peaceful, without too many tourists and with less urban development, so you can enjoy the heavenly beaches and coves in a wilder setting than in the south.

And Ibizans are determined to protect their natural treasure. The small town of Sant Joan de Labritja recently opposed a major project to build a nightclub in its municipality. Mayor Antoni Mari passed a decree to prevent a nightclub from being built on the island's turquoise waters. For him, the island needs to reinvent itself, "this is the tourism of the future".

Avoid mass tourism to stay authentic

Ibiza is banking on its 'green' side, away from tourists, resorts and nightclubs. In the north of the island, no more construction is taking place, and existing buildings are being renovated. The coves remain wild, far from the crowded beaches. A bohemian atmosphere has reigned here since the 60s, when the hippies made it their stronghold! Yoga and meditation are the main activities. You take care of yourself, the planet and the animals. You can't have one without the other!

Close to San José, an ecovillage created by the Ibiza Ecologic association has been developing since the 1990s, raising visitors' awareness of sustainable and alternative lifestyles. The Ibiza horse valley riding centre takes in abused or abandoned horses to give them a better life and offer tourists a breath of freedom on rides through the island's wilderness.
