Paradise and Super Paradise: Mykonos-style beaches

Two beaches just a kilometre apart, two of the most beautiful sandy bays on Mykonos, and two absolute symbols of the island and its recent history: Paradise and Super Paradise. These evocative names are now at the heart of Mykonos' festive life, two major reasons for the international tourist success of this small island in the Cyclades.

Indeed, this is where it all began for Mykonos, when in the 1960s the first freedom-loving, naturist hippies found their paradise on the south coast of Mykonos. **Super Paradise followed in their footsteps, frequented from the outset by the gay community and many celebrities.

The fame of these two beaches has continued to grow ever since, well beyond the borders of Greece: People from all over the world flock to Paradise and Super Paradise to party, all day and all night!

Paradise and Super Paradise: the origins of Mykonos' festive spirit

Initially, nothing predestined Mykonos to become the party capital of Greece. For a long time, the island remained poor, a little removed from history, peeled back by the sun: before the 1950s, the locals had little interest in large sandy beaches!

The trend was reversed in the 1960s, when many hippies travelled the Greek islands in search of beautiful secluded spots. They found what they were looking for in the south of Mykonos. Let's spread the word: very quickly, the nickname Paradise emerged to describe this fantastic sandy beach with crystal-clear waters, almost deserted, where you don't even need a swimming costume!

Nearby, and just as beautiful, Super Paradise followed a similar path to fame. In the 70s, tourism was in full swing in Greece, and Paradise and Super Paradise didn't stay secret for long! Beach bars and beach clubs sprang up along the water's edge, the beaches filled up and were a huge success, particularly with the gay community.

The party scene grew at a rapid pace, and Mykonos became an undeniable tourist success. A few celebrities and members of the jet set later, the beaches of Paradise and Super Paradise were packed from May to September. They are the true symbols of Mykonos, with just one watchword: non-stop partying!

Paradise and Super Paradise

It's hard to pinpoint the exact origins of these two names, but it's clear that they have an impact! Whether you choose Paradise Beach or Super Paradise, the atmosphere will be more or less the same: festive, noisy, free, young, trendy and international.

Paradise Beach is the first of the two beaches coming from Chora, around 6 km along the south coast. It's perfectly positioned, so you're guaranteed sun all day long. The water is crystal clear, just as you'd expect in the Cyclades.

Paradise Beach isn't just for relaxing in silence. The party is in full swing, music blaring, every day in high season. The beach is home to some of the island's most popular clubs, some of them historic: Cavo Paradiso, Paradise Beach Club, Tropicana Club...

Around the first beach bars set up directly on the beach, with rows of parasols and deckchairs, a whole complex of hotels and rentals has sprung up around Paradise Beach and on the surrounding hills.

The scenery is largely the same at Super Paradise, 1km further on: transparent water, golden sandy beach, rocks burning in the sun... a copy of the best Mykonos has to offer.

The atmosphere, too, is more or less identical to that of Paradise Beach: loud music, a gay-friendly atmosphere, people from all over the world coming to drink and dance, the atmosphere largely provided by the Super Paradise Beach Club and the emblematic Jackie O'Beach.

Beyond the beach, Super Paradise is a little less built-up than its twin Paradise Beach, but there are still plenty of places to stay just a stone's throw from the sea and the fiesta. A great place to recuperate!

Lovers of large, deserted, serene beaches will obviously not feel at home on either Paradise Beach or Super Paradise, unless, of course, you go there out of season: in April when the beach bars get a facelift after the winter, or during October when the atmosphere dies down. The latter will opt for other, more secluded beaches on Mykonos.

But for those who love to party, and have come to Mykonos to take full advantage of the island's current atmosphere, Paradise and Super Paradise will indeed be synonymous with true paradise in the Cyclades.
