Ever been to the real North Pole? Get ready to embark on an Alaskan Christmas adventure.

Just a 20 minute drive from Fairbanks, Alaska lies the world renowned home of Santa Claus: the North Pole. Not only can you visit the big man himself along with his reindeers at any given month of the year (because, yes, we all know that Santa works year round at the North Pole), you can also send out your wish list letters to him directly! Don’t believe me yet? You’ll get the run down when reading this article - but beware, we are firm believers here!

Visit Santa

Ever wondered where Santa and his crew made your Christmas presents? Well, here’s your chance to see him at his home in the North Pole. The Santa Claus House at 101 St Nicholas Drive opens its doors all year round for all to visit - you may even expect a special appearance from the man himself! Although it is highly recommended you visit during the winter months to get in that extra magical feel, Santa, his elves and reindeers are present all year long - how else do you expect gifts to be made by the time Christmas comes?

When it comes to the wishing process, you’d expect Santa to be receiving huge amounts of letters from all over the world. So how is this done? Well, it’s quite simple. Once you’ve made your list, you put it in an envelope, stamp it and post it to the following address: 1 Santa Claus Lane, North Pole, Alaska 99705. In return, you will receive a handwritten thank you letter from Santa himself along with one Santa dollar, a photo of him in his workshop and a sticker stating that you are on “Santa’s good list this year” (that is, if you’ve been nice) to approve your wish list! Now let’s be honest, Santa may need an extra hand to send this all out - that’s why the town has organised a community service aiding exactly with this task since 1952. There’s the true spirit of Christmas!

Other things to See and Do at the North Pole

Looking for other things to do at the North Pole? No problem. After visiting Santa’s House and workshop, you must head over to see Chena Lake and its beautiful surrounding natural parks. These are especially used for summer fire camping and picnicking. However, there’s much to do during the winter months too. You can go cross-country skiing, hiking, snowmobiling, dog mushing or even skijoring! What is skijoring might you ask? Although intense, the concept is simple: being pulled out on your skis by a horse, dog or other animal. It is derived from Norwegian skikjøring which means ‘ski driving’. Now that’s what I call a true Alaskan winter sport!

But the fun doesn’t stop there. The North Pole also hosts fun events such as Jingle in July (because yes, it’s Christmas all year long at the North Pole), Cruis’n With Santa, and their annual Christmas In Ice Ice Sculpture Contest, where you can get lost in the Ice maze and slide down the Ice slide! Not convinced yet? Take a look at Travel Alaska’s official website for more information on everything to do in the North Pole.

Editor’s Fun Fact

Did you know that the North Pole is home to the world’s largest fibreglass statue of Santa Claus (pictured above)? And that not only police cars are painted in green and white, but that street lamps are shaped like candy canes? These are mere additions to the rest of the North Pole’s epic Christmas theme along with its festive street names, such as Snowman Lane and Kris Kringle Drive.
