1. Zanzibar in Tanzania
Less well known than the Maldivesor the Seychelles, Zanzibar is nonetheless full of wonders. Landscapes to make many an island paradise weep. As well as the white sandy beaches and turquoise waters, this is also the birthplace of the greatest showman of all time: Freddy Mercury, leader of the band Queen.
The Tanzanian archipelago, which is now peaceful despite being located in the Indian Ocean, has seen one of the shortest wars in history. In 1986, the bombardment of Zanzibar between British and Unguja soldiers lasted thirty-eight minutes.
