The best time to visit Melbourne, Australia.

Waiting for that perfect opportunity to travel to Aussie land? It’s a long way to go so might as well time it well, am I right? While this magical island is ideal to visit at any time of the year, you may want to stay clear of the excessively warm summer and chilly winter seasons. So without further ado, welcome to the southeast coast of Australia: buzzing Melbourne - where its autumn and spring seasons are to die for!

Autumn in Melbourne

The autumn months spent in Melbourne are March, April and May, when foliage and moderate temperatures appear  to make your stay all the more pleasing! In addition to more favourable weather, there are fewer crowds in the streets, meaning fewer queues to venues and the sort. Moreover, accommodation and flights are cheaper than over the summer. This sweet spot is also known as a “shoulder season”!

What makes autumn memorable in Melbourne? With temperatures fluctuating between 10 and 24 degrees celsius, you can walk the streets of Melbourne for hours on end without breaking a sweat. We all know that visiting a city on foot is the best way to get to know it. Amongst architectural marvels to see in Melbourne, you may come across Scot and Michael’s churches as well as Saint Paul’s cathedral which are well worth your attention.

Walking around is also the best way to admire Melbourne’s world-renowned street art or graffiti scene. To know more about this, visit our article here

In April more specifically, the world famous Melbourne International Comedy Festival is in full bloom along with Melbourne’s International Flower and Garden Show and the Tesselaar KaBloom Festival of Flowers. Memorable evenings filled with laughter, morning conferences with educational speakers, and entire afternoons dedicated to garden circuses for some quality family fun!

More in the mood for some wine and eats? No worries. Melbourne also hosts its very own Food and Wine Festival from the 15th-24th of March. This can be perfectly paired with an evening stroll at the Summer Night Market at Melbourne’s beautiful gallery Queen Victoria Market!

Some Fall Day Outings

The Victorian autumn season is prime time to visit the ‘penguin parade’ at Phillip Island. Rest assured, the penguin parade is simply a term relevant to the evening return of penguins from their day spent in the ocean and back to their nests by Melbourne’s coastal Phillip Island. Crowds are seated as far away as needed in order to not disrupt their natural habitat, but close enough to witness the absolute beauty of this natural wonder.

Another wonderful day trip to take near the southern capital is the Organ Pipes National Park. Witness yet again astonishing natural marvels as you walk through the park’s most renowned sites, such as the volcanic organ pipe - like facade featured beneath. Such a great family outing - and just 30 minutes outside of the city!

Last but not least, May is the start of the Australian cricket season, where world class athletes perform in front of the rowdy local crowds at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) stadium. A true aussie treat! To book tickets, explore their official website

Spring in Melbourne

Australian spring is experienced between the months of September to November, as temperatures range from 9 to 22 degrees celsius.

This is also a prime time to visit the Spring Blooms at the Royal Botanical Garden located right in the city centre - an experience yet to be forgotten!

Contrary to the autumn’s cricket season, the sport most entertained during Aussie Spring is horse racing, notably with the opening of the Melbourne Cup. Let the sun shine and the drinks flow as you enjoy a fun outing at Flemington Racecourse!

Some Spring Day Outings

In the mood for some wine tasting? Take a look at what the Yarra Valley wineries have to offer! An equally beautiful natural area to discover, just a stone’s throw away from buzzing Melbourne.

More of a classic, yet an absolute must-do when travelling in the area, is cruising the southern coast via the Great Ocean Road. While the entire trip can last up to three days, the great ocean road itinerary (from east to west) passes through Melbourne’s local coast, notably Phillip Island. Pick a spot and beach and admire the view!

Another day trip worth taking is to the Mornington Peninsula, just an hour outside of the Melbourne area. In terms of outdoor activities, this place has got it all - from beach sports, sailing, surfing, fishing to hikes. This is a popular holiday destination for locals, so safe to say that this place is a keeper! Expect great food and marvellous sunsets all the while enjoying some peace outside of the city.
