Lavender, the purple gold of Provence

Lavender and Provence have a long and beautiful love affair. Intoxicating and fascinating, this flower is deeply rooted in the culture of Provence.

It first appeared in the region in the 19th century, and has since become an integral part of everyone's daily lives. In perfumery, in cooking, in artisanal medicine, etc. During the summer months, the fields are transformed into beautiful purple paintings!

By contacting the tourist office, you can follow the lavender route through the Vercors, the Luberon, the Ventoux, the Valensole plateau and many other sites, past fields and distilleries.

Important news! Lavender growers deplore the behaviour of tourists on the land. Rubbish, flowers torn up and trampled on, forbidden areas invaded all the same. If you want to enjoy this beautiful spectacle forever, you have to respect the work of the growers, and the same goes for all the flower fields!

Tulips as far as the eye can see (almost) like in Holland

Wow, we're in Holland! As much as we love France, no-one can compete with the Dutch tulips. However, the tulips of Provence offer a multi-coloured spectacle against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains.

Despite the sparkling white, the snow doesn't manage to steal the show from the tulips! If you want to take in the sights, head for the fields of Forcalquier, Lurs or La Brillanne.

Did you know? Tulips were grown by the French mainly for the Dutch. The growers cut the flowers and passed the bulbs on to the Dutch!

The poppy, the elegant flower

This flower is reminiscent of a famous perfume advert. Beautiful and delicate, it captivates us with its light fragrance and longitudinal shape. The least we can say is that its bright colour doesn't go unnoticed, and when you're strolling along the roadside, you'll be tempted to get out and spend a few minutes admiring it!

What could be more natural? Famous painters such as Monet were seduced by it and immortalised it. So fragile, the poppy doesn't keep well for long in a bouquet.

That's no problem, let's go to the foot of the Aqueduct of Roquefavour, in the Luberon and the commune of Jouques on the plateau of Bèdes and many others to marvel at this red spectacle.

Did you know? The name poppy comes from its petals, which look like a cock's crest!

The sunflower, the sun flower that makes us happy

Originally from North America, the sunflower was introduced to France in the 16th century, adapting perfectly to the soil. This flower puts us in a good mood when we see it, with its yellow colour and shape reminiscent of the sun!

Speaking of the sun, the sunflower needs a lot of it to bloom properly.

It turns towards the sun in the fields, which is why its name comes from the Italian word "girasole", meaning turned towards the sun. The sunflower is an imposing plant, large and rich, used for its oil.

Did you know? The sunflower is the new nugget in renewable energy and green chemistry.

Cherry trees, fruit trees with lacy flowers

The expression "the cherry on the cake" takes on its full meaning in this article. The last flower on our list lights up Provence in spring with its white colours.

You'll find plenty of them in the Luberon, famous for its large cherry production. As well as delighting us with their fruit, the cherry trees offer us a spectacle of abundant blossom!

Introduced to France in the Middle Ages, cherry blossoms are also used in cosmetics and perfumes.

Did you know? Vaucluse is France's leading cherry producer, producing between 15,000 and 20,000 tonnes a year.
