Italy: 5 colourful fishing villages less sought-after by tourists (and no match for Portofino!)

Italy is one of the top destinations for summer holidaymakers! But each of its corners is starting to become very well known, if not a little too well known. Located in the metropolitan city of Genoa on the Italian Riviera, Portofino is one of the most popular tourist destinations. Its colourful natural beauty attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists every year, which can make your stay a little less enjoyable... But we've got the solution! There are a number of other small fishing villages in the Botte region that have nothing to envy the star of the coast, but are less frequented. Here are 5 of them, for a breathtakingly peaceful Italian-style holiday!

Camogli

On the Italian Riviera, in the region of Liguria, lies a charming, picturesque little town that attracts many visitors, but fewer than Portofino - and rightly so! Its promenade along the coast offers breathtaking sea views: the little boats moored there add even more charm to the view! Punctuated by colourful houses on the cliffs, the bay makes an immediate impact.

The Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta is a must-see in this little haven of peace. Dating back to the 12th century, it is home to many religious works of art. And needless to say, this is why Italy is so famous: enjoy a savoury break with some of the country's specialities! Don't miss out on the best pasta you'll ever eat.

Cetara

The small village of Cetara lies on the Amalfi Coast, far from the hustle and bustle of tourism. Its authentic charm cannot go unnoticed from the open sea. It is famous for its gastronomy, and in particular for "colatura di alici", a traditional anchovy sauce used as a condiment by the locals! Try it if you're in the area.

A boat trip along the coast is recommended to enjoy unique views of the steep coastline and the sea.

Atrani

This is one of the smallest villages in Italy! These small yellow, pink and orange houses offer a very welcoming atmosphere and seem to cling to the cliffs. A stroll through the narrow streets of Atrani promises the discovery of historic and lively places such as the church of San Salvatore in Birecto. Heavenly beaches and coves are also part of the mix: the emerald waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea invite you to relax and swim.

Scilla

The town of Scilla is dominated by the Castello Ruffo, an imposing medieval fortress. This is the starting point for your visit if you venture to this side of Calabria. Next stop is the old quarter of Chianalea, with its picturesque fishermen's cottages that slope down to the sea.

Legend has it that this fishing village takes its name from Scylla, a fearsome mythological creature that lived in the nearby waters and terrorised the sailors...
