Historically, Sri Lanka, and Colombo in particular, has been at the centre of many conflicts. The majority of these conflicts were related to the colonisation of the country on numerous occasions.
During the Dutch occupation, the colonists built this garden. Formerly much longer, it was first used as a strategic point of protection from the Portuguese, who invaded the capital again in 1656. In 1856, a British governor authorised the construction of a space for "women and children to walk around". "Galle Face Green was built in 1859.
