The history of the Friedrichsbad

The Friedrichsbad was built in 1877 on the remains of an ancient Roman spa dating back to the 1st century. The original building was constructed by Grand Duke Friedrich von Baden, hence its name. The spa was designed in the neo-renaissance style and has remained virtually unchanged since its opening. The building is a perfect example of the spa architecture of the time, with its stucco walls, ceramic mosaics and marble sculptures. Closed during the Second World War, the Friedrichsbad was renovated in the 1980s to restore its former glory and become one of Europe's most famous spas.

"The building is magnificent: a majestic dome under which to swim, a succession of thermal treatments such as the Romans surely practised. The history of the place also makes it a sumptuous place to relax"- Erik F., Friedrichsbad customer.
