🏰 Hohenbaden Castle was built in the 12th century on the heights of Baden-Baden, around 300 metres above sea level. Over the centuries, the fortress was extended and renovated several times to become an important stately residence.
During the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century, the castle was badly damaged and was finally abandoned in 1650. Over time, the castle walls collapsed and the ruins became overgrown. It wasn't until 1885 that the Crown Prince of Baden, Frederick I, finally launched a restoration programme for Hohenbaden Castle. Since then, the castle has been open to the public, who can wander freely among the ruins of the former fortress.
