The rock, which owes its name to the statue of the Virgin Mary placed on its summit in 1865, was used by Napoleon III as an anchor point for the dyke of the Port du Refuge that he wanted to create. The rock was accessible from the ground via a wooden bridge and a tunnel through which blocks of stone were transported to build the breakwater. There is a legend surrounding this monument. It is said that the whale hunters known as the biarrots were caught in a storm and that a divine light suddenly appeared to guide them to the port where they would be safe and sound. This statue was erected to thank them for this miracle.
