Three days to discover the best walks around Courchevel

Courchevel is an iconic ski resort in the French Alps, but it also offers a wealth of opportunities for walkers. The surrounding mountains offer breathtaking views and a variety of trails for all abilities. In this itinerary, we'll explore three of the best hikes to do in Courchevel. We'll start with the Lac de la Rosière and Cascade des Poux hike, an excursion that leads to a beautiful mountain lake and spectacular waterfall. Then we'll continue with the Dent du Villard hike, a climb that offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Finally, we'll discover the Merlets Lakes hike, a medium-difficulty but fairly long and scenic hike that leads to two crystal-clear mountain lakes. These three hikes offer a unique experience of discovering the French Alps from a new angle.

Lac de la Rosière and Cascade des Poux

🚌 How do I get to this hike?

If you're driving, you can park at the lake car park or take a shuttle bus from Courchevel.

👉Who is this hike for?

This walk is suitable for all walkers in good physical condition, and can be enjoyed with family or friends. In summer, the route is quite busy, as the path is one of the most beautiful around Courchevel.

It is advisable to bring a baby carrier if you are doing this hike with a child who does not walk well.

👉Hike description

The trail follows the torrent before climbing through woods and alpine meadows. Hikers arrive at Lac de la Rosière, a magnificent mountain lake with turquoise waters surrounded by rugged mountains. Here, hikers can enjoy the views, go canoeing or fishing, or simply relax and have a picnic on the shore - there are plenty of picnic tables and even barbecues. The walk then continues to the cascade des Poux, a spectacular waterfall that falls from the cliff into a natural pool. It's the perfect place to cool off in summer (swimming is not permitted in Lac de la Rosière) or simply admire the beauty of nature.

The Dent du Villard

🚌 How do I get to this hike?

As on the first day of the itinerary, you can park at the Lac de la Rosière car park or take the shuttle bus from Courchevel.

👉Who is this hike for?

The walk takes around 4 to 5 hours and requires good physical condition, stamina and experience of mountain walking. It is also recommended that you wear suitable hiking boots and bring enough water and food for the duration of the hike. What's more, some sections have no telephone network, so it's advisable to bring a hiking GPS or map and not to set off without telling another person.

👉Tour description

After reaching the lake, walk along the right bank to find the start of the Dent du Villard path. Start climbing up to the Rocher du Bec de l'Aigle. Continue right for another short, steep climb to the summit of the Dent du Villard. If the weather is on your side, you may catch a glimpse of Mont Blanc.

If you're not afraid of heights, you can descend the Dent du Villard ridge and take the path to the right to reach the lake.

If not, take the same route back. We strongly advise against descending via the ridge in wet weather, as the ground is very slippery.
