The Hameau de Merlet: a brief history

The first inhabited site in the Chamonix valley in Haute-Savoie, the hamlet of Merlet was home to around sixty mountain dwellers who lived there almost completely independently, at an altitude of 1,500 metres.

Around 1920, the hamlet was transformed into a mountain pasture where dairy cows were kept every summer. The milk harvested and processed on site was used to make cheeses, creams and butter sold directly at the Auberge du Balcon de Merlet.

Then one day, a Swiss lover of Merlet, aware of the potential of this exceptional site overlooking the Mont Blanc massif, bought all the chalets and plots of land. Today, this estate of over twenty hectares is home to the famous Merlet animal park, where you can discover an exceptional biodiversity.

Merlet animal park

Created in 1967 by Philippe Cachat of Chamonix and first opened in 1968, the Merlet wildlife park was launched by "Bambi", the famous tamed chamois. To this day, the animal park remains the property of the Cachat family, who maintain the existence of this little corner of paradise in the heart of the Alps with passion and commitment.
