Spend a day at Hellbrunn Palace

Hellbrunn Palace (https://www.hellbrunn.at/en/?utm_source=easyvoyage), built in 1612 on the initiative of Prince Archbishop Markus Sittikius von Hohenems**, is a must-see gem in Salzburg. As well as its architectural beauty, this enchanting site will delight young and old alike. In fact, Markus Sittikius had a rather original and prankster-like personality, and wanted to hide fountains in the castle grounds that watered visitors** without their knowledge, in a completely unexpected way.

Even the most discerning visitors find themselves drenched, so don't forget to bring a mackintosh if it's cold. The castle has other surprises in store, including 200 hand-made figures brought to life by the movement of water, and several mythological caves. You'll need at least half a day to enjoy this laugh-out-loud visit.

History of the castle

The building, designed to house the prince-archbishops of Salzburg, was built in record time between 1612 and 1615. The architect Santino Solari, who was also responsible for Salzburg Cathedral, built Hellbrunn in a superb Renaissance style.

A tour of the castle's rooms details its unique history. In particular, you'll learn how the development of the park was made possible, with its fountains and unusual puppets. The castle was strategically located to the south of Salzburg. The proximity of the waters of Mount Hellbrunn enabled it to develop a unique concept, which you will discover as you wander through the park.

Stroll in the park

The vast grounds of Hellbrunn Palace are a skilful blend of man-made gardens and an original natural setting.

It's a very popular spot with Austrians, who love to relax, go for a walk or do some sport. Dogs are even allowed (on a lead, of course). A large playground designed for both adults and children is available for family fun. For the more sporty types, there are fields for running, badminton and even skiing in winter!

Even today, the water garden remains the main attraction: the mysterious grottoes, water-animated figures and sly fountains continue to entertain visitors to Hellbrunn. Watch out for the stone table during the tour: the seats are fitted with water jets!
