The Forcalquier region, a land steeped in history

For lovers of art, history and culture, the Pays de Forcalquier is an ideal destination!

Forcalquier is built in the shape of an amphitheatre around a small hill. From the central Place du Bourguet, you can explore a number of interesting sites:

  • The Church of Notre-Dame reigns supreme at the heart of the little town, and is not to be missed.
  • If you head up towards the upper town, you'll come to the Porte and the Cordeliers Convent. These are the remains of the ancient citadel of the medieval town.
  • Higher up, the Notre-Dame de Provence terrace surrounds the chapel and offers a panoramic view. Here you can admire Forcalquier and the Lure mountains.

Guided tours are regularly organised by the Forcalquier Intercommunal Tourist Office.

The village of Mane has plenty to offer! Here too, the village is grouped around a small promontory.

The citadel and many of the houses in the old village are built of Mane stone. The same goes for the Château de Sauvan, built in the 18th century.

With its rich architecture and historic character, Mane has been awarded the " Villages et Cités de Caractère " label.

Finally, don't miss the Romanesque-style priory of Salagon.

As a bonus, many festivals, concerts and exhibitions enliven this area of the Alpes de Haute-Provence. Most of the festivities take place between May and September.

For example, the summer season in Forcalquier is filled with classical music concerts.

Memories of the Alpes de Haute-Provence

First of all, make sure you stop off at the weekly market in Forcalquier.

It's one of the biggest in the region! Every Monday, the town centre comes alive with colourful stalls.

The Maison de Produits de Pays de Mane (Mane's local produce shop) is a showcase for the region's produce.

You'll find excellent olive oil, organic honey and remarkable local wines! The shop is open all week to ensure you get the best possible service.

Finally, make a diversion to the hilltop village of Banon. Only a few kilometres from Forcalquier, Banon is famous for its goat's cheese.

But the village is also home to a surprising bookshop! For a village of just 2,000 souls, it's a joy to stroll through Le Bleuet, a house that hides several thousand books!
