Dublin, the capital, is divided into two separate parts by the banks of the Liffey estuary. The north bank has no outstanding architectural monuments, however, O'Connel Street (the Irish "Champs Elysées"), Custom House (one of the most imposing monuments) and Parnell Square and Bloomsland in particular, are definitely worth seeing for all the references to James Joyce's novels. To the south of Liffey, the sites and activities are even more exciting: the bustling Temple Bar district still retains a medieval atmosphere; it is a place which was bustling with artisans in the 19th century and with hippies in the 1970s. Less bohemian today, it is still teeming with tiny winding streets abound with pubs, bars, restaurants and trendy art galleries. Further on, Trinity College, which educated students like Oscar Wilde, is a dream to any student with its well paved courtyards and library, immaculate lawns and 65 metre long gallery. Opposite the university, the Bank of Ireland hosts visits to the House of Lords, however, if this doesn't interest you, you can take a walk around Saint Stephen Park where you will find lovely Georgian style homes. Note that the National Museum and National Gallery exhibit some very charming items reminiscent of the Celtic era and the political and cultural history of the Irish people.
