This place is the symbol of Cannes and its festival, and every year plays host to dozens of stars who gather from all over the world for the international event. During this period, even its private beach is completely taken over by the studio of French satellite TV channel Canal+.
It was built in 1927 and to this day is the biggest establishment on the Riviera and a true example of French luxury hotel accommodation.

    Location 9.0 /10

Perfect. The hotel overlooks the Mediterranean from the Croisette, the famous boulevard lined with luxury shops. You will struggle to find a better location in Cannes, because here you have it all on your doorstep: the Croisette, the city centre, the Palais des Festivals a few minutes' walk away, and unobstructed sea views. What more could you ask for?

    Accommodation 9.70 /10

The Martinez has 409 guest rooms and suites. The former are divided into four categories: Superior, Deluxe, Executive and Prestige, and there is a similar range of choice when it comes to the suites: Penthouse Executive Junior Suites City View, Prestige Seaview One or Two Bedrooms Suite, Suite des Oliviers and the Penthouse Prestige Apartments Sea View.
Regardless of the category, all the rooms are decorated in the Art Deco style, although you will not have to make any compromises when it comes to the modernity of the facilities and the technology featured. The 148 Superior rooms measure a generous 25m². Starting in this standard category, the stripy pale yellow wallpaper, speckled beige carpet, lounge area, the bed with a high quality mattress (Simons) and the view over the city give these luxurious, brightly lit rooms a real sense of character. Needless to say, they are provided as standard with a mini-bar, safe, adjustable air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi.

    Overview 9.20 /10

The Martinez was built in 1927 by Charles Palmero, an architect from Nice, in the Art Deco style we see here today. Unsurprisingly, the hotel's external appearance is the first thing that creates an impression. It is white all over, and would look like an enormous, imposing cube if it were not for the Art Deco façade, whose bow windows and top-floor balconies give depth to the front of the building.

Once inside, you cannot help but feel that the ambience is rather similar to that of a luxury shopping centre. The lobby is perhaps too big and does not exude much warmth despite the shades of cream, beige and brown used in the colour scheme.
This is odd, because the same colours used nearby, in the lounges next to the bar, do not create the same impression. The beige armchairs with typically Art Deco plant patterns and the little round tables make this waiting or relaxation area the perfect transition between the lobby and bar.
The Amiral bar is an intimate, stylish and welcoming space with a carpet featuring the same plant pattern already seen on the armchairs in the lounges, wall panels ranging in colour from yellow ochre to red, and brown and beige club-style leather armchairs. It is the ideal place to spend the end of the day with the sun going down over the horizon.
Before sunset, however, you will already have had the chance to lounge around on one of the deckchairs around the pool, which is heated all year round, or to make the most of the hotel's private beach, which is the largest in Cannes.
For days when the weather is not as pleasant, you can always head for the spa. It has a vast array of facilities (8 treatment and massage rooms, a balneotherapy bathtub, a sauna), and the kind of treatments on offer (Lancaster solar expertise and anti-ageing, Sothys body treatments and massages) will soon push any thoughts of cloudy weather out of your mind.
The gym and its terrace and many exercise machines (exercise bike, running machine, rowing machines, etc.) is open 24 hours a day regardless of the weather outside.

    Food and drink 9.45 /10

The Martinez has three restaurants, including the Palme d'Or, a gourmet eatery with two Michelin stars where Christian Sinicropi has been at the helm since 2001.
The Palme d'Or was created in 1985 by chef Christian Willer, who was awarded two Michelin stars for his efforts in 1991. Willer appointed Christian Sinicropi as his successor, who has carried on the successful run started by his mentor, appearing once more this year in the famous Michelin restaurant guide.
The refined, welcoming feel of the dining room, with its round tables, parquet flooring and big picture window overlooking the sea, makes it the perfect backdrop for the cuisine of this inventive chef. You only need to read the menu to see just how fond the chef is of poetry, both of the literary and culinary kind. For example, take the marinated scallop grilled with aubergine pulp in a shell, seasoned with a sweet and sour smokiness and truffle shavings, hollandaise sauce with mallow, basil leaves and Kaffir lime, and a cube of beetroot gazpacho (and that's just a starter!).
The Palme d'Or is open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 12:30pm to 2:00pm and from 8:00pm to 10:00pm.

The Relais is also overseen by chef Christian Sinicropi, and offers dishes combining fine delicatessen ingredients with the idea of snacking. The dishes resulting from the traditional country cooking style include a wide range of fish, meat and vegetarian options.
The restaurant, whose terrace extends down to the swimming pool, was redecorated throughout in 2008 by designer Hélène Misard, and now features an Art Deco setting with hints of the 'Belle Epoque' and 'Champagne on the beach in the 1930's'.
Nearby, the Amiral piano bar is in an ideal spot for a pre- or post-dinner drink. Its warm and friendly atmosphere is partly down to the decor, of course, but the award-winning efforts of the team of barmen also add to the experience (they have been national champions in France several times and world champions once). The concerts staged every evening of the year are also a great touch, making it one of the only bars in Cannes where live music can be enjoyed every evening.
That is not all, though. The Amiral also serves Afternoon Tea daily from 2:00pm. Guests have the chance to sample 24 different teas and exceptional vintages along with a selection of sandwiches (smoked salmon on tapenade bread, Caesar salad sandwiches with tomato bread) and sweets (tarts, chocolate mousse and scones).

During the summer season, guests can also enjoy the cuisine prepared by the beachside restaurant, Z Plage. Most of the recipes prepared here are designed to promote health and well-being. It is located next to the Martinez's private beach and provides the opportunity to eat overlooking the sea every day between 12:30pm and 5:30pm.

    To know

The Martinez is peerless in several respects. Not only is it the largest hotel on the French Riviera, with 409 guest rooms and suites, but its seventh floor suite is one of the biggest in Europe, and its beach is the largest in Cannes.
The hotel's eight concierges are all 'Clé d'Or' concierges.

Slightly set back behind the luxury hotels of La Croisette, the Cannes Palace is a smaller and more discreet hotel. It consists of two parts: a renovated part and an older part, which are both very different. Some guest rooms are designed in a contemporary and stylish, very fashionable way, ready to accommodate couples or families for a weekend break, or even a longer stay. Do not be put off by the 1970's aspect of the building: it's definitely worth having a look at the interior. The only thing which is really missing, here, is a view of the sea.

This establishment will make you forget all you thought you knew about residence hotels. Gone are the nondescript interiors, kitsch decors, and cheap and ugly furniture, and gone are the tiny rooms with their bunk-beds. Here, everything is modern, simple and comfortable. It's the perfect place for families.

The idea behind the Eden Hotel was to take guests away in their own little bubble but at the heart of Cannes, and it is not far from succeeding in this aim. Although the decor in the Classic rooms is not very well coordinated and is unlikely to provide any sort of escape, the overall level of the services and amenities most definitely is dreamy and incredibly relaxing.

These days, the Grand Hôtel Cannes not only continues to offer luxurious 5 star accommodation, it has also kept its original interior design. If this matches your tastes, you will be in 7th heaven, because the hotel could almost classify as a museum of 1960's decorative arts, as well as offering services to match its lofty category.

Some films are great and others dreadful, and the same goes for hotels. The Renoir belongs to the former category. There is a slight nod towards the glamour of the silver screen, handled with intelligence and sophistication, much in the same way as everything else in this hotel.
When refinement and charm are top the bill, the only thing you have to fear as a guest - or an audience member - is the sound of the clapperboard announcing the end of your stay.
