Hotel Hôtel Barrière le Gray d'Albion Hotel 3 star

Amy Adejokun Section editor

The entrance to the Gray d'Albion leaves an impression, but not necessarily in a positive way, because of its many mirrors and (too) dated brass features. Once through the reception, however, you find yourself in a hotel offering a fairly high level of service and a gourmet restaurant.

    Location 7.11 /10

Located on a street parallel to the Croisette, a 3-minute walk from the sea, this hotel is also close to the Palais des Festivals. Allow a good half hour to get to Nice Côte d'Azur airport and 20 minutes to get to the train station.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

This is not a very big hotel, consisting of 191 guest rooms, only 8 of which are suites. The ninth floor is set aside purely for the 'executive' suites, which are one of the strong points of this hotel. Just like the rest of the hotel, the rooms try to strike a balance between the classic style of the establishment and the desire to offer modern levels of comfort and services.

As far as the decor in the rooms is concerned, beige is the dominant colour, and the atmosphere is subdued. It is rather a standard combination, all in all, but couples will like it. There is also a hint of contemporary design, so the end result is not that close to what may be termed the 'Provence' style.

Both the suites and their bathrooms were renovated in 2008. This category of room has nothing in common with the standard rooms, instead meeting a set of design criteria that would be the pride of any hotel in the world. The bathroom is equally up to standard in this respect, too. The only drawback to all this is the terrace, which is a rather bare space offering no views, and is still adorned with tiling that surely dates back to the original 1970's hotel building.

Basically, the service is up to standard, and it is a pity to have to draw attention to the odd fly in the ointment.

    Overview 8.45 /10

The Gray d'Albion has the major disadvantage of being located in a depressing building typical of the concrete constructions that sprang up in the 1960's and 1970's. This first impression continues into the entrance hall, which has too many old brass features, oppressive mirrors and the overall appearance of days gone by. There is no denying that the first impression is a little disappointing. However, don't be put off: the reception does not reflect the standards to which the rest of the hotel aspires.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

The pleasant surprise at the Gray d'Albion is its relatively new restaurant, the '38', reflecting the current trend for naming places with numbers. This place has modern decor, which is worlds away from what you see in the reception area. It is quite a well designed layout, with a small indoor dining room split into lounge areas furnished with bench seats and cushions, all very elegantly arranged. This opens onto a terrace area, but the major disadvantage of this is that it does not have a sea view. Plants and flowers are set around the space to add a bit of cheer, though. At lunchtime, foreign business visitors mingle here with hotel regulars to enjoy the dishes served here, which combine traditional recipes with an Asian twist. There is a sense that a real effort has been made to keep the flavours varied, which can be seen in dishes such as the salmon with mango. You can also try the very traditional (but totally sinful) dessert recommended by the head waiter: chocolate fondant cake filled with vanilla ice cream.

The 38 can afford to pride itself on its modern style, which is more in keeping with the kind of services hotels like this aim to offer.

The breakfast room can be found on the first floor and opens from 7:00am to 10:30am. Breakfast is served as a continental-style buffet. It includes some really nice touches, for example the home-made desserts, the selection of bread and the fresh orange juice (on request).

    To know

The Gray d'Albion belongs to the prestigious Barrière groups of casinos and hotels, and is just a stone's throw from the sophisticated Majestic.
There is a covered municipal car park just next to the hotel, but as it charges the standard rates, the price of your stay can rise quite sharply.
The hotel has a private beach offering special rates to guests staying at the hotel, as well as service provided by a Lebanese restaurant.

Some films are great and others dreadful, and the same goes for hotels. The Renoir belongs to the former category. There is a slight nod towards the glamour of the silver screen, handled with intelligence and sophistication, much in the same way as everything else in this hotel.
When refinement and charm are top the bill, the only thing you have to fear as a guest - or an audience member - is the sound of the clapperboard announcing the end of your stay.
