    Location 1.0 /10

It is located on the promenade des Anglais, near the Jardin Masséna and a stone's throw from the Mediterranean. Expect a twenty-minute journey to get to the central station (because of the traffic and numerous one way streets) and a little over half an hour to get to the airport.

    Accommodation 7.45 /10

The rooms of the West End boast an old-fashioned interior, vaguely English, in the same style as the rest of the hotel. The style of the rooms is defined as "modern belle époque" and they include wall-to-wall carpet, Empire-style curtains and armchairs, and a writing desk: Either you like it or you don't. If you don't mind the style, the interior is elegant, well-kept and gives no cause for complaint. Given the geometrical constraints due to the old age of the building, some of the rooms are less spacious than others, and therefore less comfortable.

Now for the hotel's strongest point: it offers a view of the sea. However, this also means that the view falls onto the Promenade des Anglais and its six lanes of traffic. Needless to say, the road is intensely busy and noisy both night and day. Of course the rooms do have double-glazed windows that block out all the noise. So you'll have to choose between the beautiful view of the blue sea, or a less exposed room that will at least enable you to enjoy the quiet with an open window...

    Overview 7.70 /10

The West End is one of the oldest hotels in Nice and it occupies a magnificent 19th century building facing the sea. Its exterior features date back to an 1842 hotel but thankfully it has undergone some renovations since!

Its capacity is quite limited, with 121 rooms, and it welcomes English and American guests all year round, as well as many Italian guests during the summer.

On either side of the entrance there is the reception desk and the concierge service. The concierge belongs to a modern breed in his profession as he has a blog in which he gives tips and posts funny stories about the city.

As one of the oldest hotels on the Promenade, the interior is reminiscent of its historical past: seen in the curtains, wall-to-wall carpet and the armchairs in the entrance hall and various sitting-rooms. It is hard to debate interior decorating tastes, but still, we could easily have done without the fake electric chandelier in the sitting-room.

Beyond any doubt, the main asset of the hotel is its location facing the sea.

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

There are two rooms for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with access on either side of the reception area. Both look out onto the Promenade and afford a view of the sea and the unending flow of traffic. In the "Palmeraie", breakfast is served in the veranda area of the courtyard. It is protected by a tarpaulin and heated so that you can eat there in the winter. The hotel serves an American-style buffet with sweet and salty specialties. The room is extremely pleasant thanks to the light of the French Riviera sunlight that illuminates the wicker chairs and the light coloured porcelain. Furthermore, the place is done up like an indoor garden.

In the evenings, the " Le Siècle " restaurant is the place where the establishment returns to its former ways. On the other side of the reception area, it also affords a great sea view. Its main asset is the attentive service guests enjoy: you will hardly have the time to finish your glass of water before the waiter fills it up again! By mixing traditional cuisine and trendier elements (such as the "water" menu with Norwegian brands), the restaurants aim is to find a niche among the fashionable hot spots of Nice. Or at least as one of the not-to-be-missed establishments of the Promenade. However, despite the artistic presentation, the dishes didn't leave a lasting impression on us.

We did appreciate the "belle époque" setting and the old-fashioned "smokers' café" atmosphere of the establishment.

    Beach

The hotel works together with the Blue Beach private beach. This means that the guests of the West End enjoy discounted rates. The beach is similar to the others along the Promenade, with deck chairs, sunshades and a restaurant.

The Mercure Notre-Dame presents itself as a town hotel in a sea resort village. As it is not on the sea front, it makes the most of its other features to set itself apart from the competition. One such example is the 360-degree terrace on the top floor that overlooks the red roofs of Old Nice, and provides glimpses of the blue sea. It is probably better suited to couples than families.
