The Duo is contemporary and in a prime location right next to the Paris Town Hall (the Hôtel de Ville) where most areas are accessible on foot. The area is very animated with the Beaubourg around the corner but the hotel is fairly quiet when the windows are shut. Duo is an all-round good place to stay despite it not having anything specifically Parisian about it a part from the toiletries and the stairway in the old part of the establishment which is said to have been used by Marie Antoinette.

    Location 8.87 /10

In the heart of Paris, a few minutes' walk from the Paris Town Hall, from the Seine, a couple of steps to the Marais, right near Rue de Rivoli, one of Paris' main shopping districts, as well as a short walk away from the Pompidou Museum. Duo is extremely well located. Surrounding it is a great variety of shops, bars, cafés and restaurants to suit all budgets. Not far from several metro stations (Rambuteau, line 11, Hôtel de Ville, line 1, St Paul, line 1).

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

There are 58 rooms in total. Extremely comfortable and cosy, the greys envelop the guest in its warmth and the touches of bright colour (orange or lime green) lift the atmosphere. All rooms have the usual mod-cons such as flat screen televisions, mini bar, and safe. The heating is adjustable from the room and most rooms have a full-length mirror. The single rooms tend to be quite small but again are comfortable and tranquil. One aspect worth mentioning is the good quality bed linen which calls out to try out when one walks into any of the hotel's rooms. Cleanliness and a neat appearance is a real priority at Duo. The bathrooms are kitted out extremely stylishly ? simple white ceramic, grey tiles reminding the guest of slate. Each has a hairdryer. The beauty products are of the Fragonard brand; an authentic Parisian touch, which is a well-needed one here at Duo. Here one could be anywhere in the world as there is nothing typically Parisian to remind the guest of the surrounding location. Duo is a real bubble of warm grey tranquillity. The suite is particularly pleasant to stay in, with its space division into living room, bathroom and bedroom. Not especially big, the area has been used wisely. The bathroom is especially attractive and calls for pampering after a long day's walk around the meandering streets of Paris. Soak in the large Jacuzzi bathtub and let the day melt away. Rooms here range from £115 (130 Euros) in low season for a single room, to £426 (480 Euros) for a suite in high season. A standard double costs around £222 (250 Euros) in high season. Check-in: 12pm; check-out: 3pm.

    Overview 6.70 /10

The Duo was recently renovated by well-known architect and interior designer Jean-Philippe Nuel, giving the establishment a real edge by building the soul of the original building; the exposed original wooden beams in the lobby and in certain rooms is an example. The lobby is not particularly large, although the window that runs along the whole length lets in plenty of light. The hotel lobby lines the street like a shop window, but the manager has made a successful attempt at rendering the lobby a little more intimate despite the bustling street just outside, through the 'window display' which changes every season. There are a number of comfortable arm chairs around low tables which lead to the bar area. Trendy and pleasant, the lobby transforms itself into a bar in the evenings (open 9am-1am). The bar boasts an extensive cocktail list mixed by the friendly barman, Miguel, definitely a bar to try out. Around the other side of the bar is the breakfast lounge. In the centre of the lobby is a great little courtyard with colourful chairs inspired by the Jardin du Luxembourg chairs. This small concrete courtyard is lined with tall bamboo, which lifts the neat straight lines of the lobby. The atmosphere is calm and peaceful despite being in the heart of Paris. The sauna is stylish and relaxing and the gym is well kitted out (free for guests, open 7am-10pm). Details such as fire regulation panels, which can be obtrusively ugly, have been integrated into the design of the hotel, making less of a feature of it. Here at Duo, there are no reminders of the surrounding city...one could be anywhere in the world. Duo is a good address for guaranteed comfort and a pleasant stay which has had a good deal of success in the fashion and travel press.

    Food and drink

Duo offers breakfast in its stylish breakfast room on the ground floor to the back of the bar area. The area is also a comfortable area to sit and read or watch the wide-screen television. Guests must specify they woul dlike breakfast included upon booking.

    To know

A small contemporary chic hotel, Duo is far from the conventional Parisian charms of other hotels we have reviewed but it does get top marks for its simple, warm boutique look. Extremely practical and pleasant to spend the night, Duo is not a place to lounge around on a Sunday afternoon. However, when in Paris, who lounges in a hotel room when there's the rest of the capital to play with? The entire ground floor also welcomes contemporary photography exhibitions which personalise the area a little more. The hotel has been owned by the same family for four generations and has only recently really been brought into the 21st century. The hotel used to consist in part of the structure that it is today. The neighbouring hotel was bought to fuse the two together, making it larger. There is still the original staircase and banister in the original part of the hotel, which Marie Antoinette is said to have used. The staff are very friendly and efficient ? all speak English. The hotel rarely accepts group bookings in order to prevent the atmosphere being monopolised; no more than 10 rooms are rented to the same group at any one time. Otherwise the hotel's clientele is shared between a business and leisure one. The hotel also welcomes a high number of Sotheby interns and Louis Vuitton senior executives. Guests sometimes bump into celebrities in the hushed environment of the corridors.

The Villa Saint Germain is nestled in an alley behind the church of Saint Germain des Prés. It was once very well known for its jazz club, and although this venue so beloved of fans of the genre has been closed for years, its famous name lives on in the hotel. Renovations carried out in 2001 gave the establishment a modern look based on a minimalistic design. This is a small, family-owned establishment without much in the way of communal space; instead, proud of the neighbourhood in which it is located, it actively encourages its guests to get out and about to make the most of the many attractions of the City of Light.

You barely have to cross the threshold before realising you are entering a hotel in which luxury, perfection and indulgence are the name of the game. Boasting rooms fit for a princess, impressive lounges and a Michelin-starred restaurant, the George V ticks all the boxes when it comes to satisfying even the most demanding of guests. The interior designer Pierre Yves Rochon oversaw the complete refurbishment of the building in 1997, and has since then continued to make improvements to the decor in the 18th Century style.

The latest Parisian luxury hotel, the Shangri-La will seduce a demanding clientele that will know how to appreciate the richly ornate Empire style of this particular hotel. Nothing more can be said about the lengths taken to find the materials, designs, and other accessories that contribute to recreating the atmosphere of the 19th century, while at the same time offering the comfort and modernity of the 21st century. This extremely shiny and ornate Empire style may scare away some potential guests, however, it is still a real privilege to stay in this residence previously owned by a prince, the great nephew of Napoleon.

Inaugurated on 28 February 2012, the W Paris - Opera has finally opened in the City of Light. The Starwood brand linked to fashion and trends thus has its own prestigious establishment in Paris.
Nestled in a 19th century building, the hotel is in a great location. Design and modernity, with a conceptual touch, all come together here. Its designer is in the best position to explain why, since we're not sure it's really clear otherwise, but the W Paris-Opera is centred around the theme The Spark. The establishment thus defines itself as a "spark", creating a fictitious connection between the very first W hotel in New York and its newest sibling in Paris.

At the heart of the Opera district, the W can already rely on its guests who are fans of the brand and hopes that word of mouth will make it the place to be in the area; not just for its rooms but for its restaurant and bar as well.
